Galileo's championing of Copernican heliocentrism led to two encounters with the Church: an informal meeting with Cardinal Bellarmine in 1616 and a formal trial in 1633. It’s a muddled piece of history which has caused many people to falsely stake the claim that the Church is an enemy of science. In this episode, Br. Guy and Chris Graney discuss the real story of Galileo’s relationship with the Church.
Guests:
Chris Graney, historian of 17th century science and Public Relations Officer of Vatican Observatory Foundation
Br. Guy Consolmagno, Director of Vatican Observatory

Are you saying Galileo wasn't tried by the Inquisition? Wasn't forced to recant his teaching? He did not spent the rest of his life under house arrest? Because if any of that happened the church was wrong and you should admit the church was wrong.

He was forced to stop publicly insisting that his novel interpretation of Scripture was true. Furthermore, Galileo was funded by and good friends with several popes, it was his abrasive personality and insistence on being right that got him in trouble. He would have been fine if he had just been more circumspect.

@@CantusTropus Galileo also started suggesting that other interpretation of the holy scriptures should be examined and re-evaluate constantly. Main reason why he got introuble with the church.

lol the good and noble church, that wouldn't allow him to marry a lower class human being. The mental gymnastics required to defend the church could qualify as an Olympic sport!

No mention of how he was treated by the inquisition, as already pointed out. Also, if he hadn't of been a 'nobleman' we could describe the kind of truly shocking and evil torturous death he would have endured. Your argument seems to be something like, Galileo was a Catholic. I'm not sure what that even means.
