Really like the atmosphere of this scene. It's one of my favorites in the movie just because of that.

It’s insane how good these performances were …. Yet I see so many untalented actors/actresses get so many roles…. This country prides itself on being diverse & equality… Yet such talent is under their noses

Too pretty, that song still has the gloom of the more hard edge ones too. I mean, I guess Ian really was talented for that tone he created.

The actors all played their own songs in the movie. There's only a very select few Joy Division recorded songs in the entire movie.

The film didn't portray him as very likable. Maybe he wasn't.
@anarchovegan9738
@anarchovegan9738 8 жыл бұрын
maybe your definition of being likeable is a pitiful one. being free and fucking who you choose is natural -humans are not monogamous. he tells deborah that maybe she shoukd now see other people -but through her state conditioning she sees that as 'nasty'.
@tbhon
@tbhon 6 жыл бұрын
As Martin Hannett would say: "Fuck off." It has nothing to do with state conditioning or whatever the hell you're talking about. Ian felt trapped in his marriage and was unhappy and needed an escape, which he found in Annik. Take your red-pill bullshit somewhere else.

Well, the important thing to remember about Curtis is that he was human. He's the subject of a lot of mystification and his story tends to be glorified because of the nature of his music and also the tragedy of the whole story, but he was just a regular guy at the end of the day. I recommend you read his widow Deborah's book "Touching From a Distance". Her accounts should be taken with a grain of salt (she's the widow he left behind, she apparently hated Annik Honore up until Honore's death, so there's a lot of bias) but there's a lot of interesting stories in there that remind us that Curtis was imperfect and did a lot of awful and cruel things. But they're the sorts of things that everybody does, treating people we care about like garbage and taking things for granted etc. He was a very grounded, of-this-world person I think. Also, reading Deborah's book, I don't think Curtis was a believer in polyamory like others have suggested. He was apparently *very* over-protective of Deborah in terms of her as *his* wife (to the point that he got angry at her for dancing with an uncle at her and Ian's engagement party) and held a lot of other traditionalist views. It's only after he starts seeing Honore and starts to feel guilty for "cheating" on Deborah that he suggests she sees other men. It's impossible to know for sure, but I suspect that he made that comment in the hopes that she'd go through with it and they'd "be even". Or, maybe he really did feel guilty and thought Deborah seeing other guys would relieve him of that guilt.

@@Arshink I wouldn't say it's fair to say that her reminiscences are to be taken with a grain of salt because she has an emotional investment in her own life's story. The fact that she has emotions about it doesn't mean it's not true. I'm quite sure it is. The only facts really in debate is how far Curtis' relationship with Honore actually went, as she herself insists that while they were very close and maybe even in love they never actually had sex. I'm skeptical, but who can say? I wasn't there.
@Arshink
@Arshink 3 жыл бұрын
@@moonlily1 The bias seemed to be less in the content of the stories she told but more in the ways she told them. I recall one story from her where she talks about Curtis giving her the silent treatment and refusing to speak. She goes into all this detail about how it broke her heart that Ian wasn't opening up to her, how he seemed like a totally different person to the man she married etc but then she glosses over the moment she gets frustrated and bites him in the shoulder, no comment or analysis of that aspect. So, I think with my grain of salt comment I was more trying to say that the way some of the stories are presented don't consider the viewpoint of Curtis and only represent the view of Deborah (which is fair enough I suppose since she's the one who wrote the book) I'm unsure about how far he went with Honore too. I think it's believable that she was mostly an emotional support for him and they never went far physically. But like you said, who knows for sure? Did you read Deborah's book? It's pretty interesting right?

I don't know... I love this movie and Sam can do one hell of an Ian imitation singing most of the songs, but this just doesn't fit. He sounds too light and pretty. He sounds exhausted, that's pretty accurate. But MAYBE they should have dubbed the original here. It's a good scene, but I can sing "Isolation" lower than this, so maybe they wanted Sam to sound like this. 🤷
