It sure is a tragedy, but even Russ, the Emperor's executioner, under command from, what he believed to be, Emperor himself to kill Magnus and destroy Prospero tried negotiating. Unfortunatelly the guy he communicated with has already been turned by Chaos.
@mepo75098 жыл бұрын
I was disappointed with the Space Wolves in Prospero Burns. SPOILERS When the daemon takes the form of Amon they - and Malcador and Valdor - fall for it so Magnus is blamed... but not confronted. Then after they've finished with Prospero it reveals the plan but they don't think twice about what they've just done or how they've been played. Unless I missed something Space Wolves are just impulsive, arrogant idiots.
@Manuelomar20018 жыл бұрын
You missed alot. Did you even read the book? Leman Russ knew exactly what what happening. He didn't get played. The books' protagonist was also a spy from the Thousand Sons, which Russ turned against them. The Wolves also had an entire culture detailed in the book, along with lots of lore about how their own Psykers, the Rune Priests, work. Try actually reading the book this time instead of skimming a few chapters and then reading a synopsis online, which is what it sounds like you did.
@mepo75098 жыл бұрын
***** He knew that there was a spy. He thought he was a Thousand Sons spy like you just said. But he wasn't. A daemon was counting on this assumption to turn the Space Wolves against the Thousand Sons because together they would be able to defeat Horus. Russ believed this until the daemon revealed its plan to the spy - now loyal to the Space Wolves - after they destroyed Prospero. But we don't see any reflection on being played, or if Russ knew all along, any reflection on fighting the one loyal brother who could help save the Imperium from chaos. If I missed that part then kindly point it out. But by the sounds of it you missed the reveal. The rest of the book is about their culture and I didn't expect to like it because I'm not into noble savage Viking stuff. Still I read it and it's subjective so others will appreciate it better. It doesn't change the plot or the arrogant stupidity that guides the Space Wolves.

Not having bad intentions doesn't excuse anything. He was irresponsible and reckless. All the Primarchs were, to a huge extent. They were just terrible leaders as both individuals and as a group, with a few exceptions like Gully and Dorn and Corax. The real fault is the Emperor, for being an arrogant, secretive idiot who hoarded information. He should have told his Sons about Chaos, about his plan, and shared much more information with Magnus than he did. But, of course, the Emperor really knew way less than he led people to believe. (He didn't build the Golden Throne, for example, he *found it* in the desert, a relic of a past age, and never fully understood how it worked or how to build more) Creating the Primarchs in general, though, was a terrible idea. Didn't he ever learn any lessons of history? Heaping authority and power onto super-generals, then making them compete for glory, has always been a fucking disaster every time anyone has done it. It destroyed Greece, destroyed Alexander's Empire, weakened Persia, and ultimately destroyed Rome.

Wait wait wait. Something came to mind. The Daemons that appeared on Terra Entered via the Web Way Gate Correct? Does that mean that if the Web Way of Mankind had been complete and then there was a breach into the warp, there would be a demon invasion on EVERY planet connected to the webway of mankind?? Perhaps its a good thing it was destroyed when it was.
@Manuelomar20018 жыл бұрын
No, the opposite. The Webway is nearly immune to being breached. The only reason Magnus was able to breach is was that the human-built section the Emperor made with the Golden Throne (which was a relic he *found*, he did not make it, and never really understood fully how it worked) was weaker than the Eldar or Precursor sections of the webway. That, combined with making pacts with what later turned out to be the Chaos Powers (which Magnus also didn't really understand at the time) gave Magnus the power to break the weaker human-section of the Webway near Terra. Basically, just stupid, stupid decisions and choices all around by both the Emperor and Magnus.

+Richter Aurelian Whoa, whoa, hold up now. _"refusing to surrender to the Space Wolves" I'm absolutely going to have to fight you on that one. -First of all, Magnus knew they were coming, and he intentionally blinded his legion so that the Space Wolves would be able to wipe out the Thousand Sons quickly. It was only after the demon fuckery enacted on his sons that he had to act. -Secondly, there was no "surrendering" to be done. The Space Wolves showed up and _immediately_ launch orbital bombardments, destroying everything except for a single city. Additionally, Ahriman found out about the Space Wolves at the last second, and the legion defied Magnus' wishes to just roll over and die to the hypocritical, misguided, batshit crazy savages that were approaching. _"Besides making bargains with Chaos"_ This one is also questionable. Actually no, you really can't blame Magnus for this one. He didn't know they were "Chaos," only that there was a powerful intelligence that could help his legion. You know who _is_ responsible? *The dumb ass Emperor*, who thought that keeping his children in ignorance would be a good way to protect them... _because you can toooooootally protect yourself against shit when you don't know about it, amirite?_ _"irreplaceable psykers"_ No. Just no. This is an exaggeration. Just say a lot of innocent people were killed. The Empire has plenty of psykers... that's why they were able to immediately begin *sacrificing thousands of them, EVERY DAY, to the Golden Throne*. Just watch the hyperbole.
@Manuelomar20018 жыл бұрын
You're both right. The Emperor was a complete fucktard with the way he withheld information, bestowed authority, and conducted business in general. Wants to reconquer galaxy, creates a score of dicator-like super generals and then has them all compete with each other for the most glory. Because that totally hasn't been a fucking disaster every time someone else has tried it in history. It wasn't the psykers who were irreplaceable, it was the Golden Throne itself. The Emperor didn't really understand it, or the Webway. He had no idea how to build another one or fix this one if it was ever destroyed. (In general, the Emperor was way more ignorant and lacking in knowledge or wisdom compared to how he led people to believe. There's a reason he needed Mars before starting the great Crusade) What Magnus did permanently burned out the Webway tech and damaged the Golden Throne. It still sort of worked, sort of. Enough to hold the webway gate shut and prevent Terra from being overrun by demons, as long as the Emperor exerted himself through it. So many bad decisions, terrible leadership, not trusting his subordinates, deliberately setting his subordinates up for failure by not giving them enough information and setting them against each other.
@Manuelomar20018 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom man, drop the fanboy bullshit already. You don't have to pretend that you believe the in-universe propaganda about the Emperor. Especially when he himself, in the Horus Heresy novels, admits that he fucked up, that he doesn't know alot of things, and that he planned things very poorly. This is what I hate about 40k fans. You don't know how to separate yourselves from the fiction that you're reading, and realize that this is supposed to be a disastrously flawed character.
@Manuelomar20018 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom "unclear" isn't the half of it. You just made all that shit up. It isn't supported at all by what's in the universe's lore regarding the subject. The most detailed, definitive, and official lore on the subject (the Heresy novels) say pretty much without possibility of doubt that the Emperor fucked up, did not really understand the forces he was fooling with, and basically failed to understand basic human psychology with regards to his own sons.
@Manuelomar20018 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom No, you made it all up. Outcast Dead doesn't state or imply any of that stuff. What *is* made clear are the statements and narrative in Horus Rising, A Thousand Sons, Prospero Burns, Merchanicum, and most importantly: Deliverance Lost. The Emperor didn't know what the fuck he was doing. He made huge mistakes, and he paid for them dearly. He did a half-assed job training his sons, and wasn't all that great with technology. (Corax, with a few months and some biologists, was able to improve on his Space Marine genome and make something much closer to a Primarch in speed and strength and resilience, without having to make any pacts with demons. There's also the very fact that he needed the Mechanicum's help at all. ) He was his own worst enemy, just like every other tyrant in history. I feel a little bad for you that you've swallowed the in-universe bullshit. Don't talk about "reading comprehension" when you can't even maintain the slightest bit of objectivity and realize that the Emperor is meant to be an illustration of failure. He's like a Dostoevsky character writ large.

Nathan Holstrom Isn't that, like, implied rather than confirmed? It would be a bit too hax for the Emperor to have that kind of meta-knowledge. I don't remember where I read about that.
@gcircle8 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom You don't have to indirectly insult me. I know of the 40k universe, but have not read absolutely everything. It just seems a bit inconsistent that Big-E has meta-knowledge of the future and then his actions seem to reflect the complete opposite, that he was an idiot in anything related to educating his sons. He makes absolutely no moves to try to mitigate in any way his sons' turn to Chaos. He almost appears to only speed things up in his negligence. Why? Because trying to educate his sons to not turn to Chaos would "somehow" make it worse? Lorgar and Magnus, the key players in kickstarting it all, turned to Chaos PRECISELY because Big-E was (seemingly) neglectful and outright a bad father to them. We do not know how the "Lost Primarchs" were, well "lost". The ones we know turned to Chaos would probably still have rebelled against their father at some point, but without the centerpiece that was the Horus/Lorgar combo, there would be no extremely organized and near successfull combined army going to Terra. Nor would the Drop Site Massacre take place, which was what put the Imperium in deep shit due to the extreme casualties the loyal Astartes suffered. If Big-E predicted it and did his best to save mankind I'll believe in his foresight, but from a reader's perspective, it almost looks like a cheap way to explain all the plot-holes away to me.
@gcircle8 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom I really appreciate you writing down all of this and showing me the pieces of lore about the Heresy I did not know. But what I meant with "indirectly" was that you didn't have to imply someone is a "slow 5 year old" by failing to read between the lines. It always felt a bit "Mary Sue" and optimistic that the Emperor just seemed to have a plan for everything and that the Heresy ruined it. The thought that the Heresy was His goal all along is...scary. For the record however, I still think Him having meta-knowledge is bullshit. I know "time shenanigans" are a thing in 40k, but as plot devices, they are bullshit. They are free "do whatever I want" cards for the writers. But again, thanks anyways.

Thousand sons reminds me of Lucifer and general battle for human soul. Ones who proclaim to be with God are themselves everything that they blame unto others. It is the Emperor who was the cause of all of this and in his infinite arrogance, he himself was the only player which was allowed by himself to play the grand game. He had punished Magnus for trying to play that game and in his arrogance, he forgot that there are other players outside of him, namely, Chaos Gods. All of this was caused by Emperor himself. A little bit of humility from him would had turned Horus heresy on its head, ensuring Imperium's decisive victory.

As others have pointed out they most likely became the Blood Ravens. This would explain why all records of this chapter's founding and early history have been lost (no doubt thanks to the Inquisition) and why they turn out more psykers than normal. It may also explain why their mantra is "knowledge is power, guard it well".

It is supposed that the Blood Ravens legion was started by survivors of the thousand sons. Thoughts?

Did love this story, a great mini tragedy in a vast galaxy spanning tragedy. one thing though you have missed though is that Horus actually organised the destruction of the thousand sons, as the emperor sent the wolves to bring magnus to terra for judgement, not to destroy the the entire legion. also i never buy that Russ was involved in the destruction of the missing legions, its possible but there is another piece of information. in angel exterminatus, Perturabo, whilst waiting on this much twisted brother fulgrim was musing on the past. within these musings he mentions climbing the astartes tower, which was a psychic test of will and fortitude that they had to get through to swear their oaths of moment with the emperor. it is claimed that not all of them made it. it could be that the two missing primarchs perhaps failed this, and either died or become jibbering wrecks? well, it would neaten it all up some.

I did mention that Horus corrupted the Wolves orders, and it is only mentioned from mny sorces that Russ MAY have had a hand in the ohter Legions destruction (Being known as the Emperor's Executioner and all that)
@AlanH4508 жыл бұрын
sorry i must have missed that. there was also the incident where he tried to show Angron the error of his ways, and predictably failed. of course that wasnt sanctioned.

How heavily were Russes losses? Or was his legion that much larger than Magnus's?
@tincano-beans21148 жыл бұрын
his legion was larger, I assume, and a large majority of the thousand sons were off world at the time. so the wolves losses weren't horrible. that being said, the thousand sons put a massive dent in the numbers they brought and whooped the sisters of silence and custodes
