Vauxhall Chrome Bumper Restoration - from very rusty to show chrome

This Vauxhall bumper from 1975 came to us in a very rusty state. It had never been chromed before as it was painted black from new (same bumper from a later car).
Due to the heavy corrosion it was not a completely straightforward to restore the chrome.
The video follows this bumper through all of the stages needed during it's restoration process.

What a brilliantly informative and educational video. I’m an Engineer with over 45 years experience in manufacturing and toolmaking. I’ve done countless jobs and once machined, out they go to the platers. Wish y'all was in Florida,there's no good chrome shops here anymore. Regulations put most out of business. A large bumper cost a small fortune to restore over here.

As old as this video is. Hopefully you'll get this comment about the sodium metabisulfIte, it also precipitates gold from aqua-rejia. Which is gold in solution. Sodium Metabisulfite is also used in beer and wine making, interesting! Great 👍 👌 👍 video!!!

Our pleasure! We have had student visits before, so that could be arranged. All of the electricity is DC between 8-12v. Amperage is high anything between 1-1000 depending on the size and what metal is being plated.

Hi guys, i have a 125cc motorbike with a fair amount of chrome work. However the previous owner did look after it unfortunately and almost all the chrome is badly pitted. would you guys be able to strip the old chrome , clean the part/s, and then re-chrome it? I am asking around to see if i can get some help with this as it would be such a shame to have to black it all for protection.

Yes, leaving it in copper is fine. The only issue would be that it tarnishes like brass. It just means it would need polishing regularly to keep it shiny. Or you could lacquer it.

It is not discarded. As it gets weak , chemicals are added to it to bring it back in balance.
