My friend bought a Vectra 1.8 Elite in 2002. The first thing he did was drain the gearbox, and refilled with 75w/80. He still has it, 280,000 with no problems with the box. He says it's the factory fill oil that's the problem with them.

I'm about to tackle a gearbox change as I've got an astra handed to me for free. It's a 1.8 convertible, it doesn't move in any gear. The driveshafts feel good with no play. When selecting gears it goes into all of them without the clutch however when selecting reverse it'll crunch which for me has narrowed it down to a broken box. Hopefully when I drain the gearbox oil I'll find evidence. I take it I can just search for any Vauxhall 1.8 gearbox around that year. Cheers

Lost count on how many vx gearbox’s I’ve changed over the years, the old days were better when you could slide the clutch out of the bottom of the bell housing once a cover plate was removed, looking forward to the fitting video , nice video Gary 👍🇬🇧

Just took apart a similar gearbox and you need to change out those input and output shaft front bearings if the gearbox has high mileage.

I blew one of these box's into a thousand bits. Fair play to for taking it appart. I chucked mine in the scrap and fitted other one. Got love the smell of gear box oil lol. It was the final Drive in mine blew a big hole in it. Hope your Daughter is ok mate.👍🛠

6:43 when you say "without a sound at all" you mean, "it's not noisy so if I'm speaking over it I don't hear anything coming from it" or "it's so smooth as silk that you really couldn't hear it at all"? I have a gearbox like that. It does make some sort of noise the first few degrees of turn, like there is some slack somewhere and it needs to "catch on" and then it gets much quieter, and does the same if you stop and turn backwards. Could it be "the big bearing", is it absolutely normal, any other ideas from anyone watching?

Hi Iv changed the clutch then put driveshaft back on and car won’t move then check and driveshaft are not engaging inside gearbox no resistance when push them in or out what could be the problem

How's the gearbox running today, Are the paper gaskets still doing their job? So many mixed opinions on whether you should use sealant with them or not it's hard to decide whether to use it. Thanks for the video

For a moment, I thought you'd bought a duff gearbox. Glad it was fine. It doesn't hurt to check it. I did a clutch change recently on a 2007 VW Beetle so I know what's in store for you when you come to swap the gearbox. Would it have been worth repairing the original gearbox. It might be handy to have a spare gearbox ready to fit if you decide to repair the original afterwards.

Wait hold on... is there a god damn drain plug on them? I've always believed that they don't have one. I always thought you have to remove the differential cover to drain the oil. That's how I've done it on the F13 (and it was a mess) and thought the F17 is the same. You're fucking with me right? :D
