Tim, In Australia. the Maloo is more treated as a coupe with a really big boot than a commercial vehicle. It's used for recreational use, to put your jet ski or trail bike in the back, more than for work. Also, just a reference, "Ute" is pronounced "Yute" not "oot"

Awesome how you enjoyed driving it and great to hear someone like you who owns/drives super cars their perspective on such an Aussie icon. I own a non supercharged version in the same colour and I love it. And I don’t have the hard lid either so mine can carry a fridge etc. It is a keeper for sure. You need to drive the W1 version of this car, trifeo tyres standard with a 474 kw V8. A real shame they don’t make them no more. Just to show how a small nation could build such an iconic and world class vehicle. Oh you speak about the handling, Holden has one of the best ride/handling engineers in the world. You will find that our roads are quite rough and so cars sold in Australia have different suspension tune which I’m sure make them suited to most roads in the world. Thanks for sharing and I really enjoyed watching this video.
@chrishoggett13758 жыл бұрын
fell in love with this concept when I first went to Australia. I've often dreamt about having one over here in Belgium where big V8's are taxed like mad unless it is, what the law defines as a 'light freight', obviously meaning a van or pickup. Not what is essentially a muscle/sports car with a big boot. It would be such a big 'up yours' to our ridiculous eco minded tax system. 😀

To be fair- Australia has had V8 utes for 50 years. I have one just like this - only the non supercharged version which still goes like shit of a shovel. Lovely car to drive - cheaper to register and insure becaase it only has two seats. I do 1000 kilometre trips in mine with no fuss at all. Best part is you can pass a bunch of cars in a heartbeat - best power band is between 50 and 100 mph. As for fuel consumption - thrash it and it drinks- cruise it and I regularly get 8.5 litres to the 100 kilometres. I once got 7.4 average driving to Adelaide with a tail wind. Great car. And they are no more.

Things like this are great for people that need to carry large things but don't really need off road capability. It would be great for a horse person to carry saddles, hay & stuff. I would love one. I do home projects frequently & it could carry large pieces of wood, paint, the occasional appliance etc. It would also be great to take to the range. Load the back up with guns, ammo, targets etc & open the tailgate for a great place to sit. More fun to drive than a truck & will work fine if you don't need to carry lots of weight or go off road. I am kind of surprised they don't sell these in the US. I think they would sell pretty well. Back in the 70's & 80's there were quite a few ElCaminos & Rancheros running around. They are great for light utility & so much more fun to drive every day than a truck.

Very entertaining review Tim; sorry I've only watched it for the first time 14 or so months after you created/uploaded it. I'm an Australian living in Sydney and while I love Porsche, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ferrari, etc; I'm also very proud of the vehicles designed and built by Holden here in Oz over the past few years, with my favourite being the HSV Senator; which unfortunately they don't rebadge and export to the UK. As for these late model Maloo ute(s) (pronounced 'yoot' Lol.), they always turn heads in Australia and are not only driven by tradespeople. Believe me when I say that quite a few young successful businessmen own and drive these utes around the streets of the Financial Precinct in central Sydney. That's right, guys in expensive suits proudly cruise about in these cars down here!! Hilarious right!? But I have to say, those guys all look pretty freakin' cool. :-) One last thing in case you didn't know and might be interested in; the first utes were created in about 1930 by Ford Automotive for the Australian market following a request for such a vehicle; apparently Henry Ford himself nicknamed them 'Kangaroo Chasers'. Lol.
@tonysmith23606 жыл бұрын
Used by builders and surfers back in Australia. There are different back canopies available down under, some higher than the cab providing plenty of room for tools etc. If your not going to drive too fast you could remove the back and put your trail bikes on it, put the lid back on to do 250 kph on the motorway.

The ute with a V8 concept has been around in Australia for many many years. HSV standard for "Holden Special Vehicles" and was really born out of the V8 race cars. They make these in family sedans as well. The car in the video is the Holden HSV R8 Maloo with 410kW 691Nm. There is now an HSV Maloo GTSR version with 435kW with 740Nm of torque (like it needed more power). We even have Ute racing in Australia. Oh, buy the way, that is a stock vehicle. You should try drifting it - it is insane fun (best to throw a few sand bags in the boot though).

I have at least a dozen of these V8 Holden utes drive past my house every day. RIP Commodore and Falcon....and to think these are now finished, just as they were getting so good! :(

As someone who lives near the Holden factory it makes me so sad when people rave about the cars we make and that after October 20, there won't be any more.

Tim needs to go see the V8 Ute racing down under and get a real idea of why we have them

Undoubtedly my favourite - alongside many other cars, but probably my favourite favourite.

Neat, I live a stones throw away from the heritage centre and grew up seeing many different cars in and out of the centre! Superb car though

I thought I was having a bad dream, waking up surrounded by Vauxhalls would be a nightmare, lol. A couple of exceptions, the Chevette 2.3HSR, VX220 turbo and the Lotus Carlton. I do concede as pickups go this one would be entertaining. Tim you seem to be broadening your horizons, hopefully this won't extend to steam trains/traction engines etc, lol, power boats would be acceptable! cheers

It's got drink holders in the rear pickup shelf. Great for car parties :)

Yeah, I know. I still find it funny though. P.S.: I know I have a weird sense of humour, but I'm German so please forgive me. :D

Love the show Shmee. We call that a Holden HSV Maloo R8 ute here in Australia. Ford Oz has (or had) two utes one with a supercharged 5 ltr coyote V8 the other with a turbocharged inline 4ltr 6 cylinder. Sadly the day of the Aussie muscle car is coming to an end : (

+Shmee150 Any plans to do this kind of video with more normal sporty cars, hot hatches like 308 GTI, Astra VXR etc?

I've got the 210hp 3.8 litre V6 version (the VU, from 2002) it's reliable, not too bad on fuel, cheap to buy, and, most of the time, it feels like you're driving a coupe. but, when you need to pick up a fridge, or a half-ton of sand or mulch, it can do that...

Us Aussies have been putting V8's into "Commercial" vehicles since the early 70's.

Im in Australia and once in the Winter i saw one of these (or a model below it or something) at a set of traffic lights, he was still spinning his tyres in 4th gear and the sound was amazing, not to say it doesn't happen all the time here in Aus which it does (my neighbour even has one lol) but yeah almost always it's going to be loud once you see one
