I actually subscribed to the VCG channel for only 2 days. Then I saw how they tortured and abused the tools in their videos and claimed certain tools were faulty or not worth buying. I own Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita tools and all have exceeded my expectations at the job site. I can't say the VCG guys know what they are talking about, based on how they purposely burn up tools by pushing them beyond their intended purpose. Its more like kids getting together and crashing their toys against each other to see which one can take the beating better LOL.

I’ve been working in electronics for over 3 decades. This is a very good explanation of why the 20 volt tool will never receive 60 volts. The failsafe engineering is perfect. All my future dewalt batteries will now be flexvolt for both my 20 and 60 volt tools. I expect dewalt will eventually only make flexvolt in a few years.

Great video. I just watched a cordless-saw comparison on Project Farm, and his simple-but-effective test showed a slight performance increase with a 60v battery in a 20v saw under heavy load. I figured that the bigger 20/60-volt battery was just more capable of maintaining 20v performance under load, and this pretty much confirms that. I have the 60v Flexvolt circular saw, and there's a huge power difference over the 20v saw.

About the only thing a Flexvolt battery would do differently on a XR 20V tool is the Flexvolt battery will hold voltage better under load due to its higher capacity. The normal 20V max battery will most likely drop to 15-16V under heavy load (say a grinder being pushed hard) but the Flexvolt battery will stay closer to 18-19V under the same load. That is still within tools rated voltage and should have no effect on the tool itself. For anyone that has even basic knowledge of electricity it would be just pure garbage to say that the Flexvolt tool could hurt the tool directly. Indirectly through longer run time that is another matter altogether but that would be no different than using two normal batteries back to back with no cooldown time for the tool. I like watching VCG channel but when they start talking about the Flexvolt battery killing 20V tools my blood pressure starts to increase.

Pretty sure they are the exact same cells in both the 20v max batteries and the flex volt batteries that are the same amp hr, it just switches from series to parallel and vice versa.... they will both be be the same under load...

I could see an old pack sticking the mechanical contacts, but rare. I could even see the possibility that some conductive schmoo could trip the electronic interlock, but almost impossible. I worked in rv factory for years..... The flex volt work fine and do not burn up the tools. Little heavy and something make a tight fit situation had to reach due to there added size. But power all day is something I enjoyed

Careful! There are actually 2 “center pins.” All of the contacts are double-stacked except for the positive and negative terminals on the sides, which use the extra vertical contact area for higher current. The C1-4 contacts are directly connected to each cell bank so that the balance can be monitored and rebalanced. The two center pins, C1 and C2, can directly short that bank of cells. It’s extremely easy to do that accidentally if you probe it like that without realizing it. Some DeWALT batteries have a plastic gate between the top and bottom but there is nothing preventing your backprobing needle from contacting both on the inside.

I don't think they are nearly as biased as many people believe. There is no denying that in some areas DeWalt has fallen behind in performance and innovation. Good video and well explained. My friend fried his brushed drill using a flex volt battery. He has had no problem with his brushless tools though. My guess is that it could be because of the higher amperage but i do not really know since i am not an electrical engineer

Just curious if 2 years later is this still true. I work on many tools on my channel and just recently had to work on some DeWalt FlexVolt packs. So I shared as we learned about how the pack operates similar to what is showed here also, but I will say I do not like some of the workings of this pack. I take time to show a diagram of the many contacts switching. Its very clever and I agree the engineers are very sharp. I do wonder if the way all these sliding high current contacts hold up well over time? I see very probable issues with the many points of sliding contact points and how the voltage changes on some of the middle pins as well when changing over from 20V to 60v. I could see possible issues as the packs age because I have now worked on some. Just wondering, thanks!

I think the lower quality 20volt tools dont have the overheat protection and whatnot. So the available amperage on the flexvolt batteries are burning them out. When these tools were released only 3 amp hour batteries were available.

I have a question about this, keep in mind, I love Dewalt. All my tools are Dewalt and I use both 20v and Flexvolt on all my tools with no issue whatsoever. However, I watched a video, I'll try to find it again, where they were testing the power/lifespan difference between the Atomic and XR DCF887 impact driver using two of the same Dewalt batteries with differing ah, I think they were 4ah and 6ah. When they got to a task that neither tool could finish, even with the 6ah battery, they attached a Flexvolt 6ah battery to the DCF887 impact driver and it continues the job without hesitation. After watching this, I tested it out myself and the flexvolt battery does seem to give it much more power. So, I guess the question is: does the voltage change under load, because there is a difference in power, of that I am sure. If there is a difference, could this possibly lead to over-powering the tools under heavy loads? I wonder if it makes any difference at all? I've used most of my tools under pretty heavy loads, but I don't purposely put them through trials either.

The difference is 18650 vs 21700 cells. Short answer: The Flex uses the 21700 cells. Those cells flow power more easily and store more energy than batteries using 18650 cells.

'20' volt tools sometimes do fry using a flexivolt battery, but I think it's because people take advantage of the extra runtime and push tools further than they usually could without a cool down period. Obviously they sometimes fry on a 20v battery too, but since you need to change them more often the tool gets to cool down a bit. which can't be a bad thing.

The reason the flexvolt batteries will burn up tools is due to current draw. More energy can be pushed through a tool with the flexvolt batteries. The issues are user errors. People are under sizing the tool for the application.

Mr subaru is right you cant get 60v to go into 20v tool the issue comes with voltage drop from cells flexvolt batteries will have a high voltage when tool is actually running thus have more power which is great but some tools just cant handle it have burnt out my multitool and 887 impact which I believe would have been avoid if using a 20v battery As theres less power available so not trying to push more wattage out of the tool which it cant handle.

MrSubaru1387, You are missing an extremely important factor. Voltage isn't everything. Don't think anyone was claiming the flexvolt battery has a higher voltage output under the "20v" mode. Remember ohms law? Watts is the only true measure of power. Most power tool 18650 battery packs use cells rated for a 20amp max draw. So looking at the cells themselves, your 1.5ah and 2.0ah packs can, in theory, provide 360 nominal watts (battery provides 20amps) while your paralleled double series packs like the 4.0ah could provide 720 watts (battery provides 40amps). The flexwatt batteries have 3 paralleled series sets with the capability of providing 1080watt (60amps). In reality, the BMS (battery management system) of the pack (little board in the battery pack) is what controls the max amount of current that is supplied to the tool. We know that the BMS in the flexwatt batteries is different than the 20v batteries. Also, while it is an assumption, its almost guaranteed that the flexvolt battery BMS allows more current to be drawn by the tool. This can be tested by testing the current of the batteries under heavy load. Current is most likely the reason you are more likely to see tool failures using flexvolt batteries, but only under heavy load.

I believe the failures came down to heat. The tools were ran hard with minimal cooldown time. Most of the tasks were high torque, low rpm in nature. Lugging the tool at low rpm prevents the fan from spinning fast enough to cool the motor. The tools were checked with temp guns and were quite hot. Almost too hot to handle/use. If the tools were equipped with 20V packs, I believe the result would've been the same. I doubt the battery is the issue. I plan to fab up a harness to run between the tool and battery so I can put an amp clamp on it during no load and loaded situations, see if there's a significant difference when using the 20V vs. the 60V.

@@MrSubaru1387 I would love to see you test current under load. I do not believe heat was the cause as none of the failures seemed to be motor related. To burn up a motor you need to be far hotter than they were reaching in their vids. Increasing current also increases resistance in those areas not able to handle it on the board. That results in an extreme hot spot then smoke, then failure (in the case of the 887's). In the case of the recip saw, over current resulting in an open circuit in the switch. That's why I think current is a far more likely cause.

No problem. (If it can fit). Sometimes the flexvolt battery is too large to fit in the tool's battery slot. For instance my dewalt 20v radio (older model) will not hold a flexvolt battery due to size of the battery.

The flexvolt battery powers 60 volt tools and 20 volt tools. Hence the flex volt... It's so you can use the 60v battery on your 20v tools with extended runtime. 4times with a 6 amphr. 6 times with a 9amp and 9 times or more with a 12 amp (60v) battery when used on your 20v tool.

I think it could be possible to burn up a tool from hard use bu giving core power than it was originally designed fore. In the past most batteries were of smaller capacity and they would shut down if overheated. But if used with very high capacity batteries now they won't shut down and the tool becomes thr weak link and its either shutdown or burn up. It's the size of the battery, the bigger an Amp hours the more power available . And if the tool doesn't shutdown it might burn up. If you use a tiny battery it's almost impossible to do any heavy work with a cordless tool.

VCG really doesn't get it, any tool will die if you put it through the ringer with torture tests for hours on end, it's not the battery packs fault, I use 9ah flexvolt batteries in 40c heat with high humidity in the summertime to build large decks, build fences and to work on cars, never have I had an issue at all. Flexvolt works and gives me longer runtime and less voltage drop when doing tough tasks. Flexvolt will always be on my tools until something better comes along

Not really related to the video but it's interesting how you got 18 and 54 volts. Outside of the US (that I know of) and specifically in the UK and Europe, DeWalt tools are branded as 18V and 54V vs 20V and 60V in the US because under normal conditions that's the voltages they would run at just like any other brand (and false claims are more heavily regulated). Kind of annoys me that they've tried to convince people that they're more powerful than a Milwaukee or something when they're actually identical. Even using the same 18650 cells.

But also as a society we know something says 20v that it runs slightly lower much like we call it 110 hous voltage when it's actually 120 and a 2x4 is actually 1.5" x 3.5". A larger AH (Batteries running in Parallel, more of them) can handle the load that a tool provides better. The load (resistance) and voltage is what determines Amps needed.... not the battery AH rating. So no, it will not output more heat.

The difference is the cells that are in the battery. The old 3.0Ah uses 18650 cells. The new compact 3.0Ah uses 21700 cells. The 9.0 and 12.0Ah batteries use 21700 cells. 21700 cells store and discharge power to the motor more efficiently. So, yes, the 9.0 gives more power than the 3.0. Not due to higher amp hours, but due to better cells.

than why just a few months ago everyone was trying to prevent you from modifying your 12v tool to use just a few volts more to 20volt for example and now that a manufacturer uses 3 times the voltage everything is suddenly ok and nothing burns up? explain this to me please!

Based on that comment, I'm not sure if you'll be able to comprehend the answer. First Dewalt tools aren't 20v and 60v, that's marketing rounding up. They're 18v like everyone else. Flexvolt is 54v. 12v tools are designed for 12v of power, not 18v. That's an extremely easy concept. Warranty void. Over power motor. Flexvolt batteries output 18v power to "20V" tools and 54V to "60V" Dewalt tools. They do what they're designed for. No damage. No issues. Simple concept.

Wrong. The larger batteries don't have the same cells as the smaller ones. That's why there is a slight power difference with the higher Ah batteries. If you had a 3.0 and 6.0Ah battery, made with the same cells, they'd have the same power. The problem is the 3.0 and 6.0Ah batteries have different cells. The larger capacity batteries have larger more powerful cells than the smaller capacity battery. That's how you get double the power potential of a battery without doubling the batteries physical size.

I got the 20v xr tool combo kit. I ordered two 20v 6ah xr batteries for $170 I see they have a deal for 2 20v 60v flexvolt 6ah battery same as the ones I have they are just flex volt and can also power flexvolt tools. So my main question is would the flex volt battery last longer in my tools? They are both 6ah batteries it’s just the flexvolt 20v 60v 6ah vs the 20v xr 6ah battery. Please help haha thank you!

6Ah is 6Ah. I buy Flexvolts because I have both 60V and 20V tools. Nice that the battery works in both rather than just half my tools.

They run faster because you have more batteries running in parallel to help handle the amp load the tool requires. In a 1.5ah battery, the pull from the tool quickly lowers the voltage as the batteries are drained. In a 12ah battery.... that voltage drain takes A LOT LONGER to effect the speed of the tool. The tool still draws the same amount of amps.... just more amps available in the battery for the tool to use.

Hi, I watched some of the VCG gang videos. They only burned / smoked out the DCF887 impact drill with the flexvolt battery. Also one reciprocating saw but not with any other DeWalt tools with the flexvolt battery. Now i watched other videos on youtube and this has also happen on the dewalt DCF887 and it also burns up with the flexvolt battery. I can't really say if it's the battery but something is going on with this specific impact that burns up with the flexvolt battery. So is it the battery or the tool? Don't know because DeWalt doesn't want to answer any questions. I think it will be a big hit for dewalt if they have a massive recall on this one tool. There's also a video on VCG that states dewalt deleted all customer comments and questions from their web site. Which seems wrong on dewalt part. I'm not bashing dewalt i used their tools and milwaukee and been very happy. Again, just odd that DeWalt can't or won't give anyone an answer.

You do know VCG is paid by Milwaukee ? They are employees of Milwaukee tools. They rig tests for views. The 887 has been out 3-4 years and has placed 1/2 in every tool test shootout by real tool channels. Watch ..Toolboxbuzz, Workshop addict, Oz tools, Skill builder...these channels do real test...VCG isn't even a construction company, they hang wallpaper and finish cement floors....

Only use the 6.0Ah and 9.0AH FLEXVOLT battery on my DCF887. Never had an issue.

@@michaelc7283 the clear issue is that they beat the tool into the ground. Apply their body weight to it, lugging it at low rpm, (which prevents the cooling fans from working), and just doing "testing" that normal people won't do to the tool on everyday use.

I did sell the 2014 I had. But no, the dash doesn't just snap in. Kind of wise I had kept it another week or two. I was up for the second Takata airbag recall. I was going to remove my dash prior to taking it to Subaru for the new airbag. I've seen how techs are replacing the airbag. Taking the passenger side of the dash loose and bending the dash back to yank the airbag. Not good. I've seen/heard of cracked dashboards, loose dashboards, rattles, missing fasteners, etc after airbag recall being performed at the dealership.

The irony is that it was one of the most rabid Dewalt fanboys who kept claiming this in VCG streams & videos. It's that "Lou cifer" guy who posts dumb BS everywhere, especially when it's Milwaukee vs. Dewalt. Or if Dewalt produces a dud product (like the X2 Lawnmower) he goes in full damage control mode for Dewalt on any and every video that showcases problems with their products. He doesn't know anything about battery cells or electric motors either, but he sure likes to pretend he does. He thinks Milwaukee HO tools are the most dangerous because they run at higher amps. Even though it's low voltage DC. Should VCG know better than to give idiots like that the benefit of the doubt? Yeah. But tbf to VCG, they did have some bad luck with multiple 887s + the recip. I keep frying my 12AH batteries under warranty. I have a dozen plus of them and a smaller pile of the 9AH units of which I've fried a few. The warranty service had been stellar pre-covid but my last dealings w/ them has been a nightmare. I sent in 4 fried units (three 12AH and one 9AH) and quickly received a replacement for the 9AH but got notice that the 12AH units were on backorder (? I meant they are DeWalt, do they really not have stock to send me?). After a couple weeks I'm still going back and forth with them and have also fried 2 more of their 12AH units that need to be sent in. I run 2 of their 9" cutoff saws, a leaf blower, a couple wormdrives, recip saws, etc. I'm wondering if one of the tools I have is doing all the damage or if others are seeing high failure rates too. This slow turnaround time is forcing me to either drop $ on 4 more 12AH batteries to keep ahead of their slow turnaround time or give up on them and go back to corded and gas powered tools. Anyone else seeing similar?

My neighbor works for dewalt and so I get my dewalt tools through him. They’ve had batteries on back order a lot in the last year and a half so it’s not dewalt doing this it’s just that they can’t get the batteries either. I know this is way late but I thought it was still relevant.

I’ve used DEWALT for 15 years and they aren’t what they used to be. In the last 2 years I’ve burned up 3 cordless hammer drill motors using 20 v and 60 v batteries I’ve also destroyed the trigger on a cordless flex volt stud/joist drill after i had it for 4 months. It was covered by warranty. Junk nonetheless! Buying Milwaukee. Tools,Warranty and service is much better.
