I’ve been doing a ton of work on decks these days, and I’ve logged a bunch of hours with my belt sander and noticed my XR 5ah battery has better runtime than my powerstack batteries.
@kenethsoberano
@kenethsoberano 22 күн бұрын
I have them all and the XR batteries are lighter and smaller in most dimensions in the 5AH size. We also get a longer run time from the XR over the Powerstack. The Powerstack is only great in the smallest form (2AH) for your compact tools. Powerstack has more power when fresh charged, but that reduces during use. The Powerstack is a short sprinter. The XR is a long distance runner.

As just for D.I.Y jobs around the home I've gone for the Hikoki (formerly Hitachi) 18-36V range. I have 16 Hikoki cordless tools with a table saw being corded. As for the 36V tools they are, the larger circular saw, the big angle grinder, the belt sander, the chainsaw and the line trimmer. It's also nice having fast chargers for the 6 batteries. I'm glad the tool companies now have multi voltage batteries in their line up the convenience of just inserting a battery into a 18V tool then straight into a 36V one, great. I find the 18-36V is way powerful enough for the average D.I.Yer, of course 18V 5a/h means 36V 2.5a.h but then you up the a/h if you need longer run time.

I’ve moved almost completely to PowerStack. I think I have 15 of the 1.7Ah ones and 8 of the 5Ah ones. I’m a bit disappointed that Dewalt didn’t make the warranty 5 years on the PowerStack stuff, especially since they claim that it can support way more cycles. The 1.7Ah is the perfect size for most hand tools for DIY use. I have an 11 year old 2Ah Dewalt battery that is still working fine so I feel like their batteries already have a great service life. I’ve had a couple of 5Ah batteries that died, but that was probably because I was trying to eek the last bit of power out of the battery and didn’t know the trick to jump start the battery from another battery.

Love my 5ah powerstack. I literally just charged it today for the first time in over a month and I keep it in my DCF850 only and I use it everyday. Love the 1.7 too but it doesn't compare to longevity to the 5ah.
@lylewaters6161

I’m a supporter of PowerStack batteries, but I’m not sure how you can say with such certainty that they will last longer. Just because Dewalt says they will last longer doesn’t mean it’s true. It’s too early to tell. They claim double the charge cycles (or whatever longer lifecycle), but since we’ve only had them for a few years, we can’t really be confident that it’s true. If they really wanted to put their money where their claims are, they should have given us a 5 year warranty with these new batteries. Here’s a potential situation, let’s say I have 2 5Ah batteries, one normal 18650 cells, and one PowerStack. Let’s say I use them both and do 1,000 cycles (I’m making this number up, but let’s say it’s in excess of what we expect the normal battery to do). If you’re within the 3 year warranty and it fails they will replace it, regardless of if it’s PowerStack or not. If PowerStack is more expensive and you can get normal 5Ah batteries for significantly cheaper, I think going with the cheaper battery now is also a safe bet. As far as I know, and I have done a few battery warranty claims with Dewalt, they don’t check the battery to determine if it was cycled too much. I’ve never even had to return my bad batteries, but that might just be because I live in Hawaii and they don’t have a service center here anymore. They literally ship me a replacement battery via a freight forwarder and they have the tiny little box with the battery in it strapped to a half palette.

Agreed for the most part. Unless it's a Flexvolt 9ah. That battery has 3 rows of 21700 cells versus 18650 in the Flex 6ah. It's important for the battery to sustain the power level and not sag when you are working with a heavy load.

How’d Jim MISS the ONE REAL JOBSITE BENEFIT of DeWalt FlexVolt Battery in a FlexVolt TOOL?! Getting up to 60VOLT POWER from the Dewalt FlexVolt TOOL! My crew all agree running DeWalt FlexVolt Chainsaw or FlexVolt Hammerdrill with genuine Dewalt FlexVolt Batteries ADDS 60v POWER PUNCH! All admit running at 60v chews up battery runtime - up to 1/3-ish. We use DeWalt 8Amp & 12Amp Fast Chargers and have at least 2 FlexVolt 6Ah or 9Ah Batteries per tool. We got no real-job downtime for swapping out batteries in tools or in chargers.

Just want to make sure I’m understanding this. A PowerStack will last 3x as an XR? Therefore spending $170-ish on a PowerStack is better than $300 for 3 XR’s. Just making sure I understand that’s what you’re saying.
@RevilO5011

Hi Thomas, I believe that you are correct in your understanding of what he meant. Li-ion (conventional cylindrical cells used in XR packs) tend to have higher ACIR (resistance) than a comparable Li-Po (pouch cells used in the powerstak batteries). The real-life effect of this difference in resistance is that a conventional Li-ion battery pack will get hotter than a comparable Li-Po battery pack, when attempting to discharge at the same current and voltage. This heat is bad for the cells, and is one of the key causes of state of health degradation.

👎🏻👎🏻 to PowerStack. The 5Ah PowerStack is incompatible with a couple third-party and at one DeWalt 20V tool - they just won't turn on. I guess the voltage might be slightly too high? The 1.7Ah Powerstack does work for those tools, but it's too small to be practical. I almost never think "gee, I wish my battery was smaller", and do find it frustrating to have it run out fast. My favorite battery for any tool is the 9Ah FlexVolt, and where that is too heavy or doesn't fit, the 6Ah XR. I have not tried the PowerPack, but I love a true 60V FlexVolt tool and can't see myself buying an 8Ah battery that doesn't support 60V. FlexVolt Advantage 20V just can't compare as they aren't putting thick enough wiring into the tools to deliver the same amount of power as 60V can. I can push a 60V tool harder and get the job done a lot faster, which seems to use battery charge more efficiently when the tool isn't struggling as much. Calendar aging, temperature extremes, charging/discharging too fast, etc. wear down batteries too - not just charge cycles. A higher-capacity battery of any kind will have the benefit of running cooler and not charging/discharging too fast - another reason I don't like the small 1.7Ah. I do have a couple and almost never use them, unless I have a really small job where I can appreciate rather than be annoyed by the size. Also, the 5Ah PowerStack is awkwardly wide and I prefer the XR dimensions.

Listen, maybe it's just me but batteries are OBSCENELY expensive for most name brands. And don't give me the quality and cost, they are marked and overmarked up just because they can.

I scrap for. A living -If you break one open you will see the actual battery is made by Samsung- and I find more Samsung junk on the side of the road then any other brand. I won’t buy another dewalt again because the last 5 batteries 😞 failed. To be fair the dewalt tool was good just the battery’s are junk.
