I appreciate their thinking. The other side, unfortunately, is that there are many jobs in India dependent on marriages. In India, the middle class spends only on a house, weddings and education. Not on vacations or luxury items. There is no right and wrong. What you guys did is ok from a wastage point of view. But that wastage also generates a lot of temp jobs. The mandapam expense is the biggest ripoff in Indian weddings, and you guys did the right thing there. Giving the gift money for a girl's education is a fantastic idea ( than not asking for gifts ).
