Mountain Topping with the Mountain Topper MTR-5B

@ThomasK4SWL tipped me off on a MTR5B for sale, and I couldn't pass it up. After tuning up a 40m EFHW to operate on all 5 bands, I rounded up N1CLC and we headed out for a holiday Monday activation of a local summit. Here's our adventure.

Fun outing and thanks for taking us along. I did the Webster County HP last weekend, my first SOTA of this year. We had a bit of geomagnetic activity, but I left with 15 contacts including a couple of DX (France and Belgium) using the KH1 and its little whip. I'm glad to see you finally got that 5b. 73 de AG7TX

Yes! And I got a KH1 now too. That silly little whip is pretty good fun, but I will most likely use a wire antenna most of the time. I found that one of my kits built as a 4:1 unun with a 15 ft radiator and 7.5 ft counterpoise tunes well on 40-10 m with the KH1.

@@K6ARK I was thinking about one of your kits to build an unun and attach a wire to the KH1. However, they seem to be unobtanium for the moment. I have a couple of them at home, but have been traveling for a couple of months and am probably still a month out from returning. I know, I know... first world problems! @@nvrumi Chris took the day off from KZbin work and wasn't filming. Occasionally we need to just get out and have fun without the camera to relax and just focus on the radio side of things. I do recommend the 4:1 unun option for the KH1. Various longer non-resonant radiator and counterpoise lengths will likely work well too with the internal tuner.

Thanks! Yes, editing is a lot of work. You should see the extended version with full QSOs 😆. Fortunately I have a decent workflow that makes it not so terrible.
