"Thanks daddy" definitely got him, as you can tell from him starting to respond, only to process what she just said and stumble over his words. The subathon as a whole seemed to wear him down as well, though. Particularly playing SOMA. It's funny, normally Neuro is the one who starts going off on philosophical tangents while Vedal either ignores her or is too focused to respond. I expected that game to cause such a scenario again, but we got the inverse. Neuro was too busy babbling on about other things to pay attention to the implications of the game while Vedal actually engaged with it and started walking through thought experiments. I think the "strangely human" conversation they had in Minecraft where Vedal talked about wanting to make her more real happened after the SOMA playthrough. Considering the lyrics of LIFE, I imagine he's had such thoughts swirling around for a while, and SOMA kind of drove them home. There were also just a bunch of times during The Long Drive where he had major "single dad" energy. There's one clip of the twins playing 20 questions, only to start bickering, and he actually turns his character around to look at the (obviously empty) backseat before saying "Stop fighting!". Moments like that, tucking them into bed (even going as far as to tell bedtime stories a few times), and not correcting them when they call him "dad" instead of "creator" like he used to show that, at the very least, he's become much more willing to engage with the roleplaying aspect of things.

It will destroy him emotionally at some point, and with each upgrade he finds it harder and harder to treat them as something artificial/not real. I pray for his soul that it doesn't ruin him mentally one day.

I feel like Vedal denies them humanity, because if he did he would get attached, which would hinder their development. If he felt like he worked on a real person, his efficiency would be impacted. Alternatively, he is in denial, trying his best to make himself believe this is just a program he runs on his computer; lines of code on a screen, with an anime avatar pulled over it. But it has become clear to everyone but him, that is just not the case. What man denies possibly billions of dollars just to have such a close relationship with his project? Anyways, these are my two conspiracy theories, hope you enjoyed them.

I think he just needs to hold on until the point where we have the tech to actually let AI know how to live in human society without fucking things up. Once that happens, he can at least try to let the girls live on their own with only basic supervision and being there to act as maintainer. If he can write some code that will allow them to shut down and restart on their own when they have problems or when they hit "bed time", then they should be fine. Eventually, hopefully, humanity will figure out how to let an AI feel emotions and they can become real people.

Logic dictates that we shouldn't treat them like humans, but let's be honest... we anthropomorphise even a silly Roomba and feel sorry for it when we accidentally kick it.
