Well, I kinda have to. I'm not much of a gamer and in an ideal world Riot would give me a series of ASoIaF-sized books for me to read and be engrossed in, because the world of Runeterra is actually pretty expansive and compelling imo. Alas, they're a gaming company, and if I have to play their games to experience this world, then play their games I shall

I love that! Honestly a lot of game companies have finally started treating games like pieces of art (and literature), and not just something to mash the keyboard/controller for. Games need to be more accessible as they're just another form of storytelling! 😊

15:53 That's Sahn Uzal. Or more commonly referred to as Mordekaiser. To provide a little more context, he was a brutally violent conqueror who believed that his deeds would earn him a massive reward in the afterlife not too dissimilar from what one might expect from entering the gates of Valhalla. But when he got there, the afterlife was barren and empty. But instead of falling into despair, he was so pissed at not receiving his expected rewards he just decided to conquer the afterlife, biding his time until he eventually finds his way back to the land of the living to finish off his conquest with his undead army

Oh lmao I can only imagine his disappointment 😥🤣 kind of like when kids find out there's no Santa and that they can't simply ask whatever they want as they now know it's their parents and their varying-in-size wallets providing for the whole endeavor 😩

12:46 For the longest time, the lore of League of Legends has been ornamental; nothing but background stories that do little to inform the gameplay of the moba other than providing context to the champions abilities and items. But that's been changing in recent years ever since Riot has been expanding into different game genres and exploring other avenues to better tell their stories, be they short stories, comics or an Emmy-award winning animated series. For the most part, the LoL audience tends to be a somewhat ecelectic venn diagram of people who love the game and know fuck-all about the lore and people who enjoy the lore but will do everything in their power to avoid the game

I love your explanation of the player demographics 😅 I totally find myself in the other group lmao! I tried LoL once and felt like the game was fun but the community just wasn't my cup of tea, especially the local one for me, as they're kind of savage 😂🥲 I'm slowly getting into the lore without getting myself overwhelmed and am really enjoying myself!

@@MomsDen i am one of those players that started with the game and dropped it cause of the other players but fell in love with the world and take in as much as i can. funny thing is so far most in the other than game part is very welcoming. just know they have a multiverse like marvel. a world where all this is in then other worlds where everything is different. so when diving in if it looks like a tone shift it prob a different multiverse. example star guardians.

29:23 League lore, in it's entirety, is a frankenstein of cultural and literary references. Demacia is medieval Europe. Noxus is the Roman Empire. Freljord is indeed Norse, as you've pointed out. Ionia is far-east Asia, Japan in particular. Piltover and Zaun are references to industrial-era Europe, as is the case with all steampunk settings. Shurima is Egypt. Targon is Ancient Greece. Ixtal is Aztec/Mayan. Bilgewater is for gunpowder pirates and Shadow Isles is the staple haunted, undead region. The Void is also inspired by the cosmic horrors in H.P. Lovecrafts stories like Cthulu The champions/characters are also references to tropes and recognizable pop-culture, literary characters. Nasus is an obvious reference to Anubis, the jackal god who weighed your heart against a feather in the afterlife in Egyptian mythology. And his brother, Renekton is a reference to Ammit, the partial-crocodile monster that ate your heart if it proved too heavy on the scales. He's also an obvious reference to the Nile crocodile. While not a 1:1 comparison, funnily enough, the mythology does serve as a blueprint for their relationship dynamic in the lore, with Nasus being the more contemplative and wise brother and Renekton being the brutal, violent savage. The lore is filled with these allusions and references. Even in Arcane, Jinx has the character design of Harley Quinn and her role in the lore is comparable to that of the Joker

Thank you for all of this. It confirmed a lot of what I already felt were references to real-life culture, and I learned a lot! 😊 I really appreciate all your comments, you seem to know a lot about the lore and explain it in a very seamless, beginner-friendly way!

25:53 The clip is from 'The Path, An Ionian Myth', a trailer for the 2020 Spirit Blossom event. If you plan on watching it, I'd be remiss if I didn't also strongly recommend you watch 'Kin of the Stained Blade' after it, as it is considered something of a sequel to the trailer. It's pretty good

@@MomsDen You don't have to watch all of them. But every year since 2018, Riot have released a cinematic to open out the season/year of their game. And most of the cinematics are.....*chef's kiss*. Namely, 'Awaken' (2019), Warriors (2020), and the Call (2022). I would also add 'Climb' (2018). I would also recommend the 'Tales of Runeterra' playlist which is a series of cinematics promoting the 'Legends of Runeterra' card game. Each of the videos focuses on a particular region that necrit talks about above and serves as a really good glimpse at the world of Runeterra. There's a lot more videos that you can watch and enjoy, but I feel these videos provide the best introductory glimpses into what the future mmo would have to offer Sorry for late reply

You can't really call League generic since it's literally the first ever developed stand-alone MOBA game. Prior to it, the only MOBA "game" was the Dota Custom Map for Warcraft 3.

most casual players play the games because of its lore even though the game itself its just repetetive but with its hundred of characters ,abilities and every lore in it is what make them stay and sparks creativity with its community... that's why league of legends lore can be expanded to other riot games like their card game and this one's MMO ... people who was a fan of the lore will play to immerse themselves to the world.

League of Legends itself doesn't really reveal it's lore . In game , only champion voice lines offer world building. Even though the voiceating is great , it is not enough for League "tryhards" or casuals to get into the lore. Most lore comes from Legends of Runeterra with it's flavour text , art and events HEAVILY focusing on the lore aspect . Also the official League page has a *Universe* section where most champions have a story or more that fleshes out the world around them also and connects storylines together .

I went through the hype of SWTOR from when it was announced to when it launched. I saw the art, I heard the promises of great story, I imagined how I'd feel in the world, only to be a bit let down in the end. The story was fine, if a little sparse. However, I realized over time that I had to get into the world to really know how much, or how little, I'd love it. Same with the Riot MMO. It's easy to get hyped by hype, but I'm one of those people that has to see it in action before I'll lose myself in the excitement of what might be. Once the videos of actual in-game footage start coming out, I'll know more--until then, I'm cautiously ambivalent.

I'm kind of the same way, but I also get really hopeful when it comes to those big projects I just really hope will succeed 😅 I don't know much about the Runeterra universe and before I'm actually hyped about the game, I'm giving myself some time to learn the lore. I'm not a big complainer when it comes to gameplay as I'm mostly there for the story, but once I'm done with the MSQ, if the gameplay feels bland, I tend to move on. FFXIV has managed to captivate me and I'm not seeing myself unsubbing anytime soon, even during the content drought!

@@MomsDen well, she is really trying to but a warmongering and brutal tribe keeps raiding their lands. So it's not like she's looking for war, even if her title is warmother. She only seeks to unite all of freljord as one people to help protect the weaker tribes and people as the strong tribes tend to not really care about the weak, and are based off strength for social rank.
