It's the spin off we all wanted but never asked for --- and it's finally here... but does it hold up to the original classic?
Well, surprisingly, yes.
Netflix 's That 90s Show brings us back to Point Place with a brand new crew to follow.
While Leia , Gwen , Nate , Ozzie , Jay , and Nikki are no Eric , Donna , Fez , Kelso , Jackie , and Hyde ---
They're still off to an incredible start.
That 70s Show sequel series , Netflix 's That 90s Show has done right by it's predecessor.
The series which centers around former leads Donna and Eric 's daughter Leia and Jackie and Kelso 's son Jay --- as well as a whole cast of new characters. ( Nate , Nikki , Gwen , and Ozzie )
This spin off provides plenty of callbacks and nostalgia bait --- but also offers up it's own original take on something not so original.
Find out what makes That 90s Show the perfect sequel series to a once beloved show.
That 90s Show is back with a second season and less familiar faces from the first show.
No Fez , No Eric , No Kelso , No Jackie , and obviously no Hyde.
But at least we still have Donna , Bob , Kitty , Red , Mitch , and Leo.
In all seriousness, this season provides audiences with a look into the lives of it's leads.
Leia , Jay , Nate , Nikki , Gwen , and Ozzie .
Netflix 's That 90s Show is finally starting to resemble the classic series it's spun off from.
Acting as the second coming of That 70s Show providing older audiences with what they once loved and newer audiences with characters they're learning to love.
Spoofing it's titular decade with a nostalgic flashback to beanie babies, the wrestling craze and even a Pulp Fiction shoutout.

It's sad that the show finally started to get decent, and stop trying to ride on the coattails of the original series, before it was abruptly cancelled. The young cast were also really starting to get more comfortable in their roles.

Yes, the kids finally found the characters and felt natural and they canned it. The cast from 70's took about a season and a half to figure it out.

That’s was my first thought. As it’s called now part 1 took half before they got traction. Then it ended too soon. Part 2 and 3 came out finally and it was good. The extra episode count did help. Now we have a cliffhanger of an ending that may or may not be resolved. Hopefully someone picks it up for at least 2 more parts to wrap it

It’s just the way the industry works today. If a show isn’t a massive hit from the very beginning, it is getting axed after no more than 2 seasons. They don’t let shows develop a following/fanbase. If That 70’s Show would’ve been released today, it would’ve been axed after 2 seasons since the 2nd season had a significant decline in viewership from season 1 before bouncing back in season 3

Ughhh, I really liked this. It was JUST getting somewhere. It was just relaxing, familiar, and fun. It didn't need to be the most hilarious show in the world but it deserved so much better. I think the new kids got a lot more comfortable after episode one. And after the Betsy stuff and Fenton coming back, and Leo's kid, it made me feel like there was a lot of world building we could have done.

For me, I had no interest in the younger characters in that 90s show. I was a teen when the 70s show came out so I was the the right age. I'm in my mid 30a now so I'm only interested in the same characters from the old show. I can't connect with the younger characters now. Should of focused on the same core group as that 70s show.

Nostalgia itself is never a problem, it's how various mediums utilize nostalgia. Nostalgia should only ever be used or sprinkled in to season an otherwise good storyline and likable characters. If the creators purpose is to create a show exclusively around nostalgia, they just going to be left with a bowl full of seasoning. Nostalgia was perfectly utilized in the original series. The primary thing that drew young and old people to the show was a likable and relatable cast of characters along with a relatable plot progression, something that should be able to appeal to young and old people in equal measure.

One thing that never gets talked about is how Eric ruined Donnas life, in the 70's Donna always talked about she has big plans for herself to travel the world, go to collage and experience what life has to offer and doesn't want to be a housewife especially after seeing how unhappy her mom was in her marriage and if we do the math we know donna got pregnant with leia shortly after eric and donna get back together and notice in the 90's Donna expressions appear that of an unhappy mother with her monotone when arguing with eric or when shes embarrassed her husband is still applying a lesson through stars wars even 20 years later

It should've been the original cast (except Hyde) getting together and navigating parenthood. I would've loved to see Eric and Kelso's reactions to know that their kids started dating, hearing of what became of Hyde, what everyone's been up to, and you know; hanging out down the street. I watched the original sporadically but it always felt Donna and Eric had chemistry and it naturally built up their relationship. 90s felt like they paired Leia and Kelso just because they needed another main couple. Also, the mixed black girl is cute but she never really stands out. They were trying to make her some 90s rage against the machine type but she was always flat and had nothing to do. The original show each lead had strong, unique personalities.

Obviously I get why they couldn't bring back Danny Masterson given his... activities, but they could have thrown in a line like "oh Hyde's working on an oil rig" or something like that. Also it may have been possible to recast Hyde, one can assume that after 10-15 years he would look much different and I think most people could suspend their disbelief to an extent. A drastic change in appearance [from casting a new actor] would be just as or more believable than some of the other concessions or tweaks they had to make.

The kids just weren't as likable as the kids from the original cast. These felt like dweeby/annoying children that I would have steered clear from at all costs (maybe with the exception of new kelco?), while the cast from the original series felt truly like likable young adults that would have been fun to engage with. Theres so many 90's shows and movies to reference that would have made creating this series actually quite easy. If they would have created a similar atmosphere of like American pie or something, it would have been both more alluring AND more nostalgic.

It’s definitely different from seasons of 22 or so episodes aired once a week over the course of a year, viewers are more analytical and there’s not the time to adjust things in writing based on viewer reception. Add in that Netflix is casting a far more critical eye on view count, if it’s not reaching Stranger Things or Squid Game level engagement the cancellation axe is far more likely to fall even when reception is very positive.

Original sitcoms don't really work on Netflix. Coming back weekly, you get to know and love the characters. Binging a short-run show, you don't get that sorta intimacy, then you have to wait a year (or longer) for more. I barely remembered the kids and their dynamics when the second season dropped.

It's really sad to watch shows get canceled right as they're finding their footing and identity and starting to cultivate its audience. Imagine if a show like Buffy got canceled after two seasons.

It’s no surprise it got canceled. Even by season 2, the characters aren’t that interesting, the acting hasn’t improved, and it’s clear the show couldn’t go on without involvement from the original cast. I know Netflix cancels plenty of shows with amazing Potential like Mindhunter and Hannibal, but sometimes it’s because the show isn’t as good as you think like that 90s show

I wouldn't say _nothing_ screamed 90s -- the sets, clothing and references were all extremely accurate and if anything _too_ on the nose -- but it did feel very much like 2020s kids doing cosplay. It didn't _feel_ like the 90s A lot of that was the language and interactions (of the kids) weren't authentic. Also it was too bright and glossy. The 90s happened in SD. If you watch Ted or Mid90s it's a massive difference since those scream 90s in every way. Agree it wasn't as funny as the original.

I never watched the show but shows need 3 seasons to establish their audience. I remember 5-10 years ago, shows I never heard of got a chance to get baked. When I turned around, a random show had 3-5 seasons. I don't get the lack of patience streaming services have. If Parks & Rec was created by Netflix, it would be gone after season 2. Why should viewers invest in shows when these services pull the plug quickly?

IMO Netflix really FKS shows like this one with the only ten episode season formula if you add up ALL 3 seasons of that 90's it only has 26 episodes where that 70s show first season was 25 episodes and i think the 90s cast was at the same feeling of comfortability at the end of s.3 that the og cast was at the end of just season one. what do you all think?
