I have been doing the vegan keto for years in order to control my type 1 diabetes, no high bad colesterol, kidney stones, or panda eyes, and no diabetes complications. But my main sources or fats are not processed sources of fats. No oils. Just nuts, seeds and avocado. The rest is just green veggies, cherry tomatoes, and berries (for they’re low carb high antioxidant). Have replied to your videos before when talking about keto, saying vegan keto is way healthier, but I always get dismissed or hated on for saying the truth about my personal experience.

Miguel Mora excellent. I’ve been vegan for 6.5 years but high carb just doesn’t work for me like it used to. I can’t explain it. All I know is I feel bloated and just cannot lose this stubborn fat that has never been a part of me in the past. The only regimen that my body seems to respond to now that I’m 28, is indeed lower carb higher fat vegan. But I don’t limit my veggies. Very much like you :) I practice IF but the food is very much like yours. Great amount of leafy greens and non starchy veggies with avocados and tahini all over them lol plus seeds , nuts and low carb vegan protein powder and berry bowls. Yum yum. Appetite is so calm and I just feel so even. Thanks for your comment :)

I'm not on a vegan keto diet, but I have definitely increased my fat intake by a lot. I found that a high carb low fat diet did not work for me at all. I tried it for a year, used chronometer and was theoretically getting all my proper nutrients, but I found that my digestion was way off, I was getting sick a lot more frequently, I was always starving, always exhausted, and generally feeling off and uncomfortable. I am a person who has an extremely high metabolism, and a very active job, so I found that after switching to veganism, at first, I had to eat constantly, and never felt fully satisfied. But it was imperative to me that I found a way to solve all of these side affects without compromising my morals. I haven't decreased my carb intake, but I've upped my fat intake and make sure I eat a bit of either nut/seed butters, coconut milk, seeds, nuts, avocados etc almost every meal. I try to avoid using oil, but I haven't completely eliminated it. I also upped my starches too, I eat a ton more yams and potatoes, usually multiple times a day actually. I've found that these adjustments have done wonders. I am not starving all the time, I feel more satisfied after eating, I don't have to eat as much, digestion is great, I'm not super tired etc etc. It took me awhile to figure out veganism, but I think that I am finally getting somewhere. Next things to do: significantly reduce refined sugar, and add in more leafy greens. Sorry for the long comment, but thought that maybe my experience might help someone in a similar situation. =)

The high carb low fat vegan diet had a big hype but in the long run I think most healthy vegans just go mainly whole food vegan nowadays with some vegan treats here and there, without obsessing about the macronutrient ratios. The refined version is definitely bad for you, elevating cholesterol levels markedly, but virgin or unrefined coconut oil doesn't have the same effect, and is a 60% source of triglycerides, which break down in the liver into ketones. The use of MCT is similar, not having the same deleterious effect as refined coconut oil. Both MCT and Virgin coconut oil can have amazing benefits for people with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. I highly recommend the book "ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: What if there was a Cure?" by Mary Newport, M.D. She also has several videos on the benefits of MCT and Virgin coconut oil here on KZbin, including a TED Talk on the subject -- very worthwhile viewing.

@mcavoreb Sure that can "taste good" but pan frying in oil is not optimally healthy (deep frying is really unhealthy): 1) using refined oil 2) heating that oil up and degrading it 3) crispy equals Maillard reaction products (www.compoundchem.com/2015/01/27/maillardreaction/) such as AGEs (and means that you heated the oil over 300 degrees f which really is not good)

great video. I have done whole plant vegan keto for many months before. The main reason I became convinced to transition to whole plant LOW fat more plant carbs instead was that I could not cure my insulin resistance on vegan keto. Even with massive amounts of veggies and greens. Now I have learned that the underlying cause of insulin resistance /type 2 diabetes is actually fat in the cells blocking the signaling ...it would seem the keto diet , while it gets your numbers to look great (A1c and glucose levels) it only because of the absence of most carbs. However I noticed after being on keto...I was becoming MORE reactive to even low glycemic carbs in time. Example , early days I could manage berries...later after a year berries would spike my glucose more than before. This is possibly another reason not to keto long term even vegan keto. I vote for getting into occasional keto the most natural way....by fasting.

What always interests me the most about those keto diets or intermittent fasting diets are claims about this mental clarity and heightened cognitive functions. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find any reliable source of information to verify such claims or show the science behind them. Maybe that would be a good idea for a video? Just throwing an idea; it seems like an untapped niche

Man, I can tell you it's true, at least for me! My personal experience with this vegan keto has been incredible. I was very lethargic before I started it. That being said, I'm not quite sure about the long term effects. Cutting carbs has helped me a lot. I plan to keep doing it while I feel good.
@garethbaus54713 жыл бұрын
Honestly I won't necessarily say it doesn't happen since it very well might be the true, but humans are notoriously bad at accurately evaluating their own mental state so I would wait until there have been some more studies on cognitive performance during different diets.
@SombreroPharoah2 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine in the absence of carbs/glucose, from fasting and keto. Would both trigger the body to elevate its Norepinephrine, along with other things, that would account for the mental clarity and energy. For how permanent or per individual that's a benefit may be a different matter. Just on a morning coffee ponder.

I have a bad brain... well, I get these beastie migraines called Hemi-plegic migraines. They mimic the symptoms of a stroke - so loss of vision, loss of sensation & movement down one side, and slurred speech/impaired cognitive function. When I first went vegan I ate a standard vegan & found the prevalence of episodes increased. So I tried a whole food vegan diet & they got worse. Eventually based on the studies in epilepsy (the conditions are related) I settled on a vegan Keto diet. I’ve now been without a hemi-plegic episode for nearly 12 months! I know it’s not scientific & the studies aren’t there to support my findings but if I can do anything that helps me function then I’m all over it!

Really dude you cited a 4 day Keto diet study. Could you really expect anything less than if their bodies haven’t acclimated to using ketones as a source of energy. Within those 4 days the body is still using up the glycogen stores in muscles as well as at least 4 lb of water, causing dehydration. Do your homework. There have been more extensive studies on keto.

Hey, Mic! Thanks for creating this video :) I have definitely experienced the circles under the eyes with low-carb and keto. It's noticeable and disturbing. I read, somewhere, that they come from your digestive system having a hard time processing animal foods. Regular keto is known to commonly cause constipation and I would hazard a guess that that contributes to the under eye circle action going on, in at least some cases.

you do know that a ketogenic diet for children with drug resistant epilepsy (typically 4:1) is completely different to for an adult using it to lose weight right? Side effects you showed here are related to kids using 90%+ fat and often processed foods because they are little kids and its easier for the mothers to give them keto 'treats'. There are also other reasons for the side effects- often these kids are still on AEDs which can cause nutritional deficiencies and kidney/liver problems. You don't see this in adults with well formulated ketogenic diets, of which there are many (different forms) because all the diet really means is maintaining a state of nutritional ketosis. There is no such thing as THE ketogenic diet, because there are many ways to do this, but is nutritional ketosis harmful in any way on a nutrient dense, well formulated diet? Its a big fat no from me.

So, something interesting about this...when I started doing vegan keto, I was eating way too much fat...adding coconut oil and avocado to everything. It was decadent, BUT, when I really took a look at my macros, I was way over on calories and fat. Now, the only added fat I have is vegan butter for cooking my tofu(it would stick without it, and it's lower calories than olive oil or coconut oil. My biggest fat source is actually the two blocks of tofu I eat every day, totaling 40.5 grams of fat(for one firm and one extra firm block). There is no room to add fats anywhere. I eat tofu, vegetables, almonds, and beyond meats(which contain coconut oil), and also Morning Star vegan chicken strips, which are unbelievably high in protien.

I don't know if I agree with Mic there, I do keto cycles twice a year and I don't increase my animal protein consumption at all. I eat more greens, nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil but I keep animal products pretty low overall especially since I cannot have dairy due to all the sugars. I have thought about a vegan keto cycle but I already have a low T score (243) and eliminating cholesterol only makes that problem worse. When I did a strict whole food vegan diet I felt severely drained and fatigued the entire time presumably from the even lower levels of testostarone. I never had the dark rings around my eyes that Mic describes nor have I ever seen it in my family many of whom are long time keto due to the family curse of severe blood glucose issues. For the record I have never used an MCT oil to get into ketosis, simply not needed all you have to do is a fasted workout to burn off any residual glycogen and you are burning fat for fuel within a few hours. There is a reason we avoid canola oil it is a very unhealthy fat overall as it's omega 3 to 6 ratio is way off and it oxidizes very rapidly, not to mention the industrial solvents that are used to refine it, such a process is not needed with olives and coconut which can be cold pressed without solvents. I do loose a large amount of weight on keto and no it is not just water weight, I drop 22-30lbs every time I cycle (roughly 30 days) but in my case the only reason I have that much weight to loose is my genetic insulin resistance and low T, I work out six days a week for goodness sake. I never once in all of my keto cycles ever counted carbs in leafy greens or any non starchy vegetable, the reason why is the tiny amount would simply be burned off the second I did my next set on the weights, the body preferentially stores carbs as glycogen so that is gone in a matter of seconds if you do any lifting, hence would not lead to any significant insulin spike that would kick you out of ketosis. Long story short I won't recommend keto to anyone but for those with severe insulin resistance it can be a life saver, if you are able to do it vegan that is even better as some of the best sources of healthy fats are from olives, nuts, seeds, avocados, and coconuts.

Thanks for the video Mike! One of the biggest cons for me is the no beans keto mandate. The healthiest societies on the planet all eat a ton of beans. Even ancient gladiators as per the research discussed on The Game Changers were primarily "bean and barley eaters." And Dr. Greger from Nutrition Facts recommends we eat beans 3 times a day--even for breakfast--to not die. Doesn't make sense to me to exclude one of the world's most affordable superfoods, and one that comes in so many natural flavors and variety, which are essential to any diet regimen. SMH

Speaking personally, maintaining high blood ketones for more than about a week feels FANTASTIC. Energy levels are rocksteady throughout the day, regardless of when I eat or how much I eat in one sitting, and there's just this incredible feeling of mental clarity and greater emotional stability. I didn't even expect it back when I tried keto, but then when I experienced it, I found a lot of other people reported the same thing. There's definitely something to it. Plus it makes your pee smells like a bouquet of flowers, which is a nice bonus. The trouble with low carb diets, vegan or otherwise, is sticky, greasy stool. Fiber only goes so far at curbing it. Even adding psyllium husk does only so much. It is not fun, to put it mildly. It also does weird things with muscles. It preserves them, so you don't really lose strength like you'd expect even with a lack of exercise, but it also makes gains very difficult too. And without glycogen, muscles just get thin and mushy (albeit still very functional), so creatine is nice to have to offset that effect. And though there isn't a loss of strength nor endurance, subjective feelings of fatigue come on much quicker, so it takes more willpower to stay active. Those two facets make keto unsustainable for an extended period of time for me. But damn did it feel good for the while I held onto it.

I adore your channel and all your videos Mic, but I gotta say all your videos about weight loss definitely come from the perspective of someone who has never struggled with their weight. I gained 15 pounds when I went vegan and the only way I've been able to lose any of it is to limit my calories to 1300ish a day. 1400 wasn't even doing it for me. Whole food plant based didn't do it for me. My metabolism sucks. The struggle is real.

it's hard for people to relate if they haven't been there. I struggled for years testing every diet in the book. I have 2 videos on my channel that explain my diet I need to do some update videos though as I've dialed in my diet it's imperative to make sure your body activates the parasympathetic nervous system or thee "rest and digest" system. Removing, stress bad people and habits along with meditation and a positive mindset are all needed to get to this state but need to work in conjunction with a plant-based diet to lose weight, at least for those of us that have absurdly stubborn body fat.

I lasted about five days on keto vegan. I think it really messed up my blood sugar/insulin. I went on it because of insulin resistance but OMG! I felt so awful! Now I'm just trying to refine my vegan diet to help with the insulin resistance and I feel like my brain fog from the keto is slowly lifting after two days of carbs. I really wish I had the money to see a naturopath because I'm feeling really lost as to what I can eat anymore. Along with the insulin resistance I was diagnosed with cancer (something I was certain I wouldn't face because I've been vegan for so long) so I badly want to make sure my diet is in check so that I recover quickly. About the only thing I feel certain about is that I don't want to give up being vegan and that I need a certain amount of carbs in order to function. I just wish I could find some help because I desperately want to get better and don't want to go on medications.

I did 2 weeks in ketosis on vegan keto. No carb counting. Most of my calories came from chia, flax, hulled hemp, pumpkin seeds and cocoa powder. It was high fiber with as many vegetables as I could eat. Ketoacidosis is a risk for all keto diets and I experienced symptoms consistent with mild ketoacidosis both times I ate at restaurants (my caloric intake could have been higher or I could have had more carbs than expected). If you're going to do keto for any reason, high fiber vegan keto is great and easy when eating homemade food.

I'd like to point out that you failed to define what a "standard keto diet" is. Based on what you shared, it is all meat, dairy, and saturated fat. Butter and bacon. Which is obviously false, albeit very hyped. Anyone who can afford it at least, would have a balance of plant based and animal based sources of protein and fat, not one or the other. And so if that is what is being compared in all of these studies, I think it's fair to say that unfairly lumps all keto into the same category. Besides, in my look into the research, "very low carb" has had a murky definition. A lot of these types of studies that "debunk" keto have way too much carbs in the first place. So it's not even keto. And therefore, their results cannot conclude anything about keto. I'd also like to point out that completely nut based fat is not only prohibitively expensive but typically those higher fat nuts like macadamia come from tropical areas. They're native to Australia but mostly produced in Hawaii and South Africa. So unless you live in those places, you are increasing your carbon footprint. I am keto and a scientist myself. So I do my own research in the literature. In my opinion, a keto diet that relies heavily (but not solely) on plants is a good balanced option. Not just nutritionally, but environmentally. I try to make about half of my meals vegetarian or vegan keto, which helps offset my carbon footprint. As much as the ethics and environmental impacts of veganism resonate with me, I don't think evolutionary biology is irrelevant. Vegans struggle to maintain proper vitamin and mineral levels without supplements and we evolved to be omnivores. If you can't maintain that with whole foods reliably, it seems like an unnatural way to live. Again, in my opinion. But still science based. This comment is intended for discussion, not trying to be argumentative. I think it's helpful for someone like me (keto first, vegan second) to see your perspective (vegan first, maybe keto second in this video) and vice versa. There are a lot of studies out there which make claims that are not what they seem until you read the fine print details. So it's good to do a check on each other. Cheers!

An interesting side effect that this keto diet helps with is people with PCOS. They tend to show diabetic signs due to their bodies not dealing with glucose correctly. Similar to a type 2 diabetic they have an inability to process sugars but in the case of PCOS the research is finding that carbs are actually stimulating the diabetic symptoms, think of it almost like a celiac with gluten but in this case a woman with PCOS could be classified as allergic to glucose. So using this keto version it can allow the people to maintain a healthy lifestyle while being able to stay vegan/vegetarian.
