I found a case report of a woman who actually did go into ketoacidosis from a ketogenic diet. Her carb intake was less than 20 grams per day, which is insane. “Benign dietary ketosis resulting from restricting carbohydrates could, theoretically, cause ketoacidosis in persons with a predisposition to the condition. Carbohydrate-restricted, high-fat diets may have adverse metabolic sequelae when followed for protracted periods.” www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc052709#t=article So it’s probably incredibly rare, particularly if net carb consumption is within 20-50g/day. But we’re dealing with a diet that has seemingly no benefits for the average healthy person (other than appetite suppression*), and has very little research on long-term effects. *This may not even be a benefit, given how prone the diet is to nutrient insufficiency. Eating less of an already nutrient deficient diet isn’t a great idea long-term.

Unnatural Vegan I don't understand why you constantly like to trash low fat diets here's a study comparing a low diet versus a low carb diet www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0056190/ What should also be noted is that even though the low carb group lost more weight than the low fat group their cholesterol overall was much higher than the low fat group. NOW DON'T STRAWMAN ME! Because I'm say we should completely avoid healthy plant foods that contain fat because at least we need omega-3 fats normally about 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds are enough to provide enough for the entire day normally the fat intake I try to go as low as 20% calories coming from it and a little bit more with protein but overall more carbohydrates. Mainly because the only fuel source our brain can run is glucose as shown in this study. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3900881/ Carbohydrates are or body's mainly source of energy which is why our body stores carbohydrates as glycogen in the muscle for later use as energy. So carbohydrates aren't really going to make us fat. I'm saying to consume an insane amount of carbohydrates like 80/10/10 but still mostly consume more carbohydrates overall while at least make sure your getting enough healthy fats.

The channel "What I've Learned" has good videos on Keto, and the guy cites many sources. His channel is the thing that convinced me to try keto and it seriously works. I have no more brain fog, I am satiated even on low calories when cutting, and I've lost 15 lbs so far with only 10 more to go to get to my goal weight.

Unnatural Vegan those red velvet fat bombs are yum!!! I made my own macadamia cream cheese for mine :) So I have written a ketosis cycling diet - if you want a copy you can send me a message on Instagram and I can email it to you. @epfitnz... it gives you the best of both worlds. Well three worlds - I can explain that later. Meanwhile pretty good overview of the diet. I think there are a few things you missed with regards to therapeutic ketosis. I think what peps don't realise about any diet that takes them into a fast is that living in it can cause you to start storing. Especially if you stop living in it. Am a total fan of cycling. However there is argument for "starving out" cancer. I have listened to a few peeps who have been interviewed because they cured themselves of cancer living in ketosis. Or used a combined approach. Do you think sometimes maybe you come from that angle of "if science hasn't proven it then it can't be true???" We should remember that it's not conspiracy to consider the business of it... coconut oil is cheap compared to chemo! In summary - try the fat bombs - they are so good. Also there is a peanut sauce there somewhere which is pretty lush. Also diets require purpose. The purpose is determined by the individual and I agree with you - this may not be appropriate for everyone. Some people don't process fat well... some people don't process beans well... some people are so damaged a diet of ripe bananas may actually be a good choice for a while - the free banana crazies were not the first peeps to suggest it!!!

Sorry, you really have no understanding of the matter. Because I am one of the persons who can get Ketoacidosis from extrem low carb, I know that it has nothing to do with the nutritional ketosis. If you fall into Ketoacidosis the reason is an underlying metabolic problem. The reason is still not clear, but my guess is that in this case the insulin production in that person totally stops and Type 1 diabetes symptoms appear. One of this symptom is ketoacidosis. So please stop talking bullshit about things you clearly have no understanding of. The solution for persons like me is to keep the carbs between 25 and 50 g per day, so being fat adapted, but not in ketosis. That's called low carb.

Probably will get buried but I’m on day 27 of a keto diet (20g total carbs per day). I’ve lost 9 lbs so far. I think some of the point you’re missing is that yes, you can do this without counting calories, but the reason is that part of it is mindful eating. Eating fat keeps you full longer. I’ve struggled with food and unhealthy eating my whole life. This is the first time I’ve been able to stick to something so long. I haven’t binged yet (used to weekly), my skin has cleared up, and I’ve stopped craving sugar. It seems restrictive, but for the first time in my life I have been able to stick to a way of eating that is healthier for me than before. Also getting blood work is important because everyone’s body is different. All I know is that it’s working and I’m happier overall.

Lost 100 lbs in 13 months on keto. Keto helped me to grab control of my eating and was the only thing that worked for me. Two years later I want to try more plant based to add more nutrients in my diet. Keto works for some, not for all. I think it’s good short term and having a more “low carb but not ketosis low carb” is a good way to transition it more into a lifestyle. Learned a lot from keto 👍🏼

Purely anecdotal, but the ketogenic diet has been the single greatest fat loss tool I've ever tried. I used to restrict calories to 1200~1500 calories per day and lost a lot of weight (~25lbs), but little did I know my metabolism has a mind of its own. It eventually caught up to my shenanigans and put a complete halt to any progress. I am also, apparently, a little bit of an insane person as I kept doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. I was already only eating once a day, so further restricting any more calories was out of the question. Over the next few months whilst keeping everything the same I actually ended up gaining 5 pounds... Out of sheer desperation, I cold turkey implemented a custom cyclic keto/paleo hybrid type of diet. "Keto" because high fat (60%ish), moderate protein (30%ish), low carb (10%ish). "Paleo" because I kept things raw ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) and minimized intake of processed foods as much as possible. "Cyclic" because I dedicated Saturdays (or whenever I go out) as carb re-feed days. Needless to say, the diet worked out well beyond expectations and I was finally able to lose that last nagging 15lbs. I also finally got to have a face to face meeting with my abdominal muscles which had been hiding from me all my life. I was hoping they'd be more symmetrical but, alas, one can't fight with genetics... There's a few thing I'd like to point though... despite this being a "low carb" diet, my intake of green leafy vegetables were by far the greatest in terms of volume (minimum of 7~10 cups a day). My main sources of fat came from avocados (which I ate at least one a day), nuts and seeds. Hunger was definitely blunted, and I noticed that I could easily go an entire day without eating and still not feel hungry, but I still ate since being consistent with my daily macros was key. In fact, I started by eating at maintenance 1800 calories, and increased it over time to 2500, 3000, 3500, and 4000. The reason for this was that I started going to the gym for strength training, so I had to increase my protein intake (100+ grams) for optimum progress and, since I'm following a keto macro spread, I had to increase fat intake as well (and since fat is highest in calories, this easily made me go over 3000 calories per day). Having said that, I really do believe this type of diet works on some people better than others. I'm 27 y/o 5'8" male currently at 129lbs (was 165lbs before). Most people require a week or two to first get into ketosis, but I did it in two days (and as a previous religious 3 times a day Asian rice eater, I'm pretty confident I've never been in ketosis before). I never experienced the "keto flu," and I am able to transition back into ketosis after a cheat day within one day (most people need two days or more). I also am able to stay in deep ketosis while eating 50 carbs a day (yes, I've had my urine and blood tested) which gives me a lot of room for more vegetables than the average person. Anyway, a lot of my friends were so impressed by the transformations that some of them started this diet as well with varying success. One of them in particular, who has been overweight since middle-school, started this diet at around the same time as me (7 months ago) and mimicked the foods I ate very closely (but at different volumes and exercised at home) and went from wearing XXXL shirts to now larges and mediums (he never counted calories btw; he doesn't even know what a TDEE is). I'm not sure exactly how much weight he lost since he wasn't good at keeping track of things, but over 80lbs fore sure. He's still losing.

I'm the same as you, I can jump into Ketosis quite quickly and depending on the amount of exercise/walking, sometimes I can have a cheat day and still be in ketosis the next day. But by cheat day I'm talking about a fairly large plate of rice, beans, fries and veggies and a banana shake.

When juice fasting, I lost weight and gained it back within days! When mono fasting, I gain the weight back fast. But from keto, I've always gained a kilo back in food, eating larger portions. But afterwards on a simple plant based diet, for the first time ever i've still managed to drop weight. So it definitely helps my metabolism. HOWEVER I notice if my weight creeps up to 85 kilos, from 85+ it just gains 5 kilos in a week. If i can stay below 85kg, I'm fine. I can have pig out days etc with no issues.
@leftstanding
@leftstanding 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my cheat days were similar like that as well. I would reload on carbs as much as I wanted on things like rice, potatoes, beans, fruits and veggies. It didn't mean that I could indulge on refined food; I had permanently quit refined sugars, trans fat, and fried foods, cheat day or not. Anyway, now that I am on a standard high carb vegan diet I am slowly learning the ways my body reacts to different types of food. All diets, I feel, should be personalized to best match one's body type.

Ketogenic diets for epilepsy are only used for "childhood" epilepsy (at least in medicine here in the UK), it's usually not effective at all for adults with epilepsy!! In many cases there is not need to continue the diet as the condition goes into complete remission (cured) even when going back to a SAD diet. They have a pretty good idea of the types of epilepsy that tend to respond to keto. And when it works, it works FAST, so after a just a few months if there's no improvement then can move on but at least they tried. The brain of a baby, toddler and even young child is much more pliable than an adult , it's a tragedy that some adult epileptics suffering with this since childhood were not given the chance to at least try this while theirs brains are still growing and therefore more responsive to such an intervention. Thank Big Pharma pushing Dilantin and the rest of the anti-convulsive drugs, etc., as the ONLY options available. A crime, IMHO.

the carb amount is flexible, and really depends on the person... it's perfect for insulin resistant people. you just avoid starchy and processed carbs... if most of your carbs are from leafy green veggies, and fruits that don't spike your insulin, eat protein rich food and eat a higher amount of fat.

I've been on a keto diet for 4 years now after trying everything, including veganism. I lost 100lbs and have kept it from creeping back upwards by sticking to what is called 'lazy keto'. Also, i am a type 2 diabetic.. and enjoy not having to rely on medications or insulin.. because my blood sugar stays in line this way. It's not a hard diet to follow once you get used to it. Veganism was more difficult for me, and as well, i felt like hell while doing it.

Thanks for your comment neptronix, I'm type 1 diabetic and feel the same. There are a lot of people in the world that live with diabetes and I feel like it often gets brushed off or drowned out in the what can become quite a political conversation about diets. I hope it becomes less sensationalised so that there are more low carbohydrate options, which is why I follow a 'lazy keto' plan as well haha or lean towards a lower carb higher monounsaturated fat diet rather than being religious about it.

I've been slowly converting to a vegan keto diet. Since I cut out almost 95% of all white flour based foods I've actually felt more clear headed during the day and I don't get as hungry as often or tired after lunch. I' don't really eat much saturated fat or processed oil. I eat a lot of avocados, nuts and seeds. I cook Indian curries so I make vegan keto naan bread with coconut flour and psylliums husks which is amazing and brown rice only once a week. I honestly feel much better eating this way. I know I'm not fully vegan keto but I have lost 1.5kg over the last 6 weeks so it must be working for me. I had blood tests before I started reducing carbs and everything was in normal range. I'm going to go back after 3 months and see if there are any changes. Oh and one other thing, I also started intermittent fasting at the same time so my eating window is from 12pm-9pm, 2 meals a day.

So to be honest, I believe at least for me it was a healthy option given a few supplements. Angelica Madureira That's great that keto is working for your condition. The closest I have been to a cure for my migraines is plant rich dairy free keto. I now take Valproic acid which is one of those drugs UV mentions at 6-7 minutes into her video and it is working very well. Ketosis emulates fasting, in which state plasma free fatty acids elevated. Valproic acid is chemically a fatty acid so maybe creates a similar effect to ketogenic eating. I use them both in tandem. I wish there was more research on this. Good luck!

Wasn't losing any weight. The higher fat keeps me satisfied and I can be satisfied with around 1600-1700 calories a day. I also don't have binges like I did with calorie deficits in other types of vegan diets

Keto (not vegan keto) for 2 months now and I love it. Of course I initially wanted to lose weight, but then I realized how much better I feel without carbs. I used to nap everyday and now I rarely do. I used to feel bloated all the time, hungry within a couple hours of eating, I was depressed, anxious, and my mind raced all the time. I feel like a new person. I haven't even weighed myself since I started this diet. I don't care about the weight anymore. I'm just glad I don't feel like poop anymore. The rest will work itself out. Oh, and I always hear (you said it, too), that the diet is unsustainable. I have no desire to stop anytime soon. I rarely get cravings anymore- (I used to crave sugar and salt all day long). I have been to several social functions in the last 2 months and was able to abstain from cake and dessert, something I NEVER would have been able to do 2 months ago. Also, as with any diet, there are a million ways to interpret it. The most healthy way to do keto is to keep it plant based- you need veggies for the nutrients and fiber to help digest the moderate protein you are eating. I would say a meat and cheese diet is not good. (Which is probably what most people think keto is.)

The point of a ketogenic diet and, what many people are failing to understand here, is that you need a lot of fat but more specifically, you really need saturated fat. On a conventional diet - where insulin is running rampant - you need to reduce as much cholesterol you possibly can to avoid clogged arteries, but on ketosis your insulin levels are much much lower allowing you to eat as much saturated fat as possible and at the same time even have a lower level of blood cholesterol. And this is really key because you need most of your fat to come from saturated fats because that is the fat your body can readily convert to energy. Consuming PUFA (poly unsaturated fatty acids) in excess - which are very ubiquitous in vegan proteins and fats - can lead to many unwanted health issues because it reduces good cholesterol in the body. this is where most people are ignorant on the matter, even many respectable dietitian are in the wrong because they don't know the interactions between low insulin and blood cholesterol. They seem to think that the interaction with dietary cholesterol on a high insulin producing diet is the same when on a low insulin diet, which is really not the case at all.

the insulin is lower when you actually do the therapeutic keto version some websites claim that meat, dairy and eggs doesnt have glycemic index because they are not carbohydrates, which is bs because they DO have insulinogenic responses, and sometimes they are higher than carbs, specially egg whites and lean meat, some carbs has lower glycemic index than a fatty beef or bacon or even eggs egg whites has a insulinogenic responses equivalent to a glycemic index of 74%... thats higher than white bread, while chickpeas only 10% which is lower than bacon, that means you have a better chance of staying in ketosis by eating chickpeas throughout the day than eating the common keto eggs and bacon breakfast our body uses triglycerides for energy triglycerides are made by the body with fatty acids, we use the saturated fat for other functions and they are mostly when we are babies, developing our body and mostly our brain, we dont need as much of it as we get old

this is rough because most vegan proteins and fats are high in PUFA's (Poly unsaturated fatty acids) and low in saturated fat, and anyone that eats that much PUFA will feel like shit no matter what because of all the good cholesterol you are getting rid of on a diet high in PUFA. When on ketosis you want to eat a lot of fat but you want to mainly eat saturated fats (which is what many people on this diet fail to do). You need saturated fat because that is the fat that your body can readily burn for energy.
@alexpena9927

it does seem scary to eat that much saturated fat because of all the data on how bad it can be for you, but the problem is that data came from conventional diets which are high in carbohydrates, which means its also high in insulin. Recent studies shows that if your insulin levels are low, you can eat almost as much saturated fat as you want without getting clogged arteries. Another misconception about the keto diet is that you will get cancer from all the saturated fat. While on the ketogenic diet there is a really good indication that it is very good at fighting cancer even though the research does not yet back it. For one, cancer cells seem to thrive on glucose for energy and have a really hard time metabolizing fats to repopulate effectively. Many doctors go as far and say that cancer cells can no longer burn fat at all and cancer cells subsequently die from starvation. The data isn't out yet but all the recent data is starting to point in that direction. The problem is the keto diet isn't simple, and for that reason, many people tend to fail.

Alex Pena I loved your post. One thing that always irks me is that peeps keep saying "there is heaps of evidence that saturated fat is bad for you". - actually there is heaps of evidence that processed saturate fats combined with Carbs is bad for you. This is like a fat storage nightmare of insulin spikes and fat storage hormone spikes!!!! So peeps stop deep frying your carbs. Eat one or the other at a sitting and not both!!!!

Angry Vegan Cyclist am I too assume you are of the high carb lot??? 😂😂😂. To all in the group I think we should note that it is early days into the studies of ketosis and that when citing any study you can be selective in how your read it - most are. I think we are moving into the age of ketosis - Aitken's was the first signs of it and a total disaster but there is more available to the dieters now and it can certainly be done healthier. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence out there and a lot of studies on a lot of things and not a lot of double blinds. Take fish oil for example - for years it was claimed to be good for us and lowered the risk of heart disease. Now we find out that potentially 80% of all fish oil - irrespective of quality may be rancid and more harmful than not taking it. On the other hand I used the high carb freelee madness to help a client of mine with chronns - it wasn't the only thing we did and we certainly didn't put her on 30bananas a day. But blended dates and bananas were a great way to get energy into her body and help her gut while we plugged away at a few other options for healing. She would be asleep on a keto diet and dysfunctional for everyday life. Doesn't mean we won't use it later but at the moment she looks fabulous and is off her meds. The next phase for her is more carbs and now more fats with a herb complex. There is no study out there to say what we are doing is correct but there are a bunch of hippies who rate marshmallow root and slippery elm etc. oh and then there is the fact that this is the best she has felt in 20 years. Doctors didn't diagnose her a naturopath did!!! I think the biggest issue I have with Unnatural Vegans video - even though I quite like the video - is that she hasn't actually tried the diet or potentially considered why she personally might want too. I have to say the candida die off is pretty awesome. The energy boost once your body settles is great - and I came from a high carb diet. Also I have noticed my period symptoms have currently disappeared. I would like to point out I am currently cycling ketosis - so I do have carb days. I would also like to point out I came from a high carb diet I loved. I am just running my own little personal anecdotal experiment. Unnatural Vegan is against fadism - and for good reason - it's a bit sick. But fadism is the energy we bring to our religions and obsessions they are not occurring within inanimate things. Those things just bring them out. Clearly one of the reasons Unnatural Vegan might avoid this diet is she doesn't trust her Narcissism to stay in its box. Which is a good reason to not get involved in anything that can quickly become an obsession. I hope she is aware that her current pedestal has the potential to become exactly that....

I've been on a ketogenic diet with an occasional carb cycling for 2+ years with counting neither calories nor carbs, just ate what looked like to be carbless food. 6 moths in and I lost 10kg down to 62kg and have been maintaining this weight. Fitness, mental clarity, immune system have been fantastic ever since. I've started eating carbs lately, mostly long grain white rice because I've been thinking about eliminating sentient animal meat from my meals, but I want to do it without any health and financial compromises. Ever since I started eating carbs again (2 months) I've gained 2kg (probably water weight) but waist circumference remains the same, just a little more fat and bloat in the belly (still within level of tolerance).

I can't tell you how glad I am that I found your channel today (the what the health debunk brought me to you) and I have shamelessly been watching your content since. What nutrition/macro tracker do you use in the video? The one I use doesnt track choline, lysine, or other nutrients that I am interested in tracking as I return to a more sound plant based diet. Thanks again for this content. I was high carb, low fat vegan for a decade reliant on processed foods, soy, and gluten (like all the popular cookbooks, forums, and PETA at the time 😐 encouraged). Ailing with new food intolerances, I then thought I needed to go raw vegan to get better, and all of this wrecked my hormones, gut health, and immune system. But this sound, science based approach is truly a breath of fresh air for someone with plant based inclinations.

I’m a type 1 diabetic and Try to get out of that blood sugar rollercoaster with keto. However, I eat an average of 50 g of carbs, but I do stay in ketosis... but I would not recommend this for people who have no medical reason to do this. When i’m in ketosis I am not hungry. When i’m not in ketosis I binge on high sugar foods no matter what I’m doing with my diet.

That's a reductive approach and likely to cause more harm than good. The great thing about a whole foods plant based diet is not only are you getting all of your essential nutrients (with the exception of B12 and vitamin D from the sun), but you are also getting a whole slew of antioxidants and phytochemicals- things most people don't talk about. Meat, dairy, egg, and fish industries have used unique positioning, so people focus on protein, omega-3's, calcium, iron, B12. Have you ever heard of someone boasting about how many anthocyanins they got today? How about lutein? Lycopene? These are just some of the thousands of nutrients found in plants, that you won't get if you take vitamins to supplement a junk food diet. Also, whole plant foods work in synergy to optimize the absorption of nutrients. Worrying about meeting RDA's (as Swayze seems to be very occupied with) is unnecessary, as our bodies store nutrients can pull from those stores if we are ever lacking- though you won't be lacking in nutrients if you eat a whole-foods vegan diet.

Justin based on her videos (particularly her old what I ate Wednesday's) she just advocates (in no particular order) unlimited nuts, beans, seeds, tofu, tempeh, seitan, nutritional yeast, fortified plant milk, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Overall I think because she is an ethical vegan she is cool with people eating anything as long as it's vegan.

I think Swayze is very interested in nutrition, but she is coy about presenting any "one" diet because the truth is, the human body is highly adaptable and we're capable of being healthy on a variety of different diets. What works for someone may not work for someone else, as she pointed out in the video. I believe that most people fall in the middle of low carb / low fat. Any diet that is vegan (ethical reasons) and is well supplemented is what she recommends. This can be anything as long as you take a multi or specific vitamins and minerals.

if you are eating green leafy veggies and avocados.... it's very hard to get to 20 net carbs considering the fiber and nutrient ration in these foods. and there is a lot of research about it, if you are open to it. there are many videos on High Fat Vegan, and I know it helps. You don't even have to go super low carb enough to be in ketosis, and a result, lose weight. You can simps have a lower carb to protein, and fat ratio and still be fine, lose weight, and maintain your health. add the fat! it does help with all of these things. do not knock it until you try it. there is a breath research.

I really love your work here. But I'd like to make a few points. There have been numerous studies out of Europe and Japan that suggest that saturated fat has NEVER EVER been the culprit. In fact, as fats in general, and saturated fats were demonised, large populations around the world decreased their intake...only to take up processed carbs instead...which led to a MASSIVE increase in cholesterol, heart problems, obesity and cancer. I don't believe that saturated fat is the enemy. There are several factors we have to further consider. 1. Our ancestors ate larger amounts of saturated fats and oils from whole foods and didn't have the health problems we have. Yes we live longer because of medicine...but they lived healthier. On saturated fats. 2. During Nutritional Ketosis, the way your body processes fats, cholesterol is a fat, changes in several ways. It is often normal to find elevated cholesterol levels HOWEVER have a DECREASED RISK OF HEART DISEASE due to the fact that the cholesterol is in a different shape and doing a different job...it's shuttling fat out of storage and down to the liver for processing into ketones...energy...instead of having it stick to arteries and clog up hearts your video has been excellent however and I'm going to watch more. If they are as good as this one, I will subscribe.

I'm currently in my 2nd week of the keto diet, and this is the second time I am on it. I really fail on calorie restrictive diets to lose weight (I'm not overweight, I just would like to lose that last 10lbs). I find with keto that it's really easy to avoid boredom eating, which is my problem. I can't just make a massive sandwich, or go into a shop and get a pastry. If I feel snacky, I'll snack on olives or nuts which are much better for me. It's a great weight loss tool. I don't think it's a great long term diet, but doing in for 6 weeks of the year keeps me at the weight I want to be at until Christmas comes and ruins it all :D

I'm not an expert but I would say a keto diet is not necessarily about cutting all carbs but about cutting refined carbs - all sugars, white flour, potato. I don't believe there's one right diet for everyone, but people who need to increase insulin sensitivity and cut sugars do benefit from keto. However I don't like eating that much animal fat and I've been trying to replace that with nuts, avocado, etc. I'm not too crazy about the macros though. It has really helped with hormonal imbalance in my case. I cannot pinpoint exactly the reason but it looks like cutting sugars and bread had an impact.

honestly 180 carbs is a healthy amount of carbs, no matter which way you put it. i expected my bloating to go away when I tried this, but it increased. i felt pretty lethargic, so I couldn't find energy to work out. i didn't have any cravings, which was interesting. i couldn't do this for more than a week. so now I'm keeping my fat moderate (about 60-70g a day) and my carbs under 200, so that I'm not depriving myself of anything, but still restricting my sugar and being smart about it. i have stopped gaining weight, and I now have energy to go work out a little bit more so I'm excited about the next phase of my weight loss.

I think when done healthy keto is a really good diet. My mom and I did it and she continues to do it with plenty of cheat days. She had diabetes but because of her doing it she has been medically cleared to stop taking insulin and is prediabetic. She did a lot of research and didn't take it at face value. It works for some people, it is all about how your body reacts and processes certain foods. Some peoples bodies need more carbs and some peoples don't but when making a healthy lifestyle change I find that it helps you to get in touch with listening to your body.

For choline, as an alternative supplement, 1 tablespoon of Bob's Red Mill lecithin granules provides 275mg choline according to Cronometer (20mg of calcium, too, better than nothing! and a little iron, 0.4mg). Cheap and can be sprinkled on all sorts of food in small amounts, doesn't have much taste. When I was making soy or nut milk at home, I blended in lecithin as a thickener, used it making cheesecakes as well to firm up the filling. Did this stuff while I was pregnant/breastfeeding. I'm a type 1 diabetic, and I really want to be vegan, but it seems almost impossible to get normal blood sugar control on a vegan diet. The more carbs I eat (which vegan diets are usually pretty heavy in), the more insulin I need to inject and the more of both a diabetic has, the more unpredictable the results become... :( I'm experimenting right now. I find something that I like and has low carbs, make a meal out of it, and "save" the meal as a default go to meal. Meaning I make the same meal in the exact same way again when I want it, so there is as little variation as possible in what I eat. This to make things as predictable as possible. I'm building up a low carb vegan meal library this way. :) It's difficult, but will be worth it in the end, I believe. :)

What you said around 3:00 is very wrong, ketosis has less to do with wanting to eat alot of fat and more to do with connecting that your body doesnt really need carbs to survive. Carbs are also not the main source of gaining weight it is more to do what is happening on the microscopic level on what the types of food in your body turn into.

I still eat 150-180g of net carbs (~15% of my calories) and still get into ketosis, which still allows me to pack in a lot of nutrient dense foods even if they have some carbs. But I guess most people can’t consume ~4500cal daily, which is currently just below what I need to maintain my current weight with a single fasting day a week. Upping your caloric maintenance through various means (strength training, HIIT, LISS cardio, fasting, brown fat promotion) can be an effective tool to manipulate your net macros.

Personally, I believe any type of keto diet is meant to be temporary and therapeutic and I’d probably rather use it in conjunction with intermittent fasting. I believe in whole foods and think people process differently so one must really gauge for themselves whether or not something works for them and shift when needed. I think getting into ketosis is hard for those who really need it but it is very beneficial to them to do this and then mildly graduate into a cleaner lifestyle and intermittently fast or eat keto to keep in check. It’s basically a way to detox and allow the body to perform natural functions that most these days never do since we have such an abundance of foodstuffs. If we live a life of mild feast and famine, in conjunction with a whole, (local, seasonal and organic) food based diet, this type of diet would not be necessary because we’d already be doing it at times. And I actually find coconut to be better for me than soy, so people really need to experiment with themselves.

I cured my diabetes through fasting....so my body would definitely would go into ketosis. It took me about 2 months...I fasted completely 3 days a week and ate 1 meal a day for the rest of the week. Also I am vegan.

n=1 i've been following a VLC/ketogenicdiet for almost 15 yrs. It's been therapeutic for a number of issues primarily severe obesity (start wt >200 lbs, maintain 125lbs for the entire time i've been LC w/o restriction or neurotic behaviors, natural eating 100%). The ketogenic portion of the diet is specifically therapeutic for mood issues. My experience is its actually EASIER to be keto plant based because the #1 killer of ketosis is TOO MUCH PROTEIN. So if you do a regular omnivore low carb diet you might eat , eggs and meats, lots of animal foods and you end up like 50% protein or so... which will absolutely murder ketone levels, unless you're fasting or hypocaloric (soin effect, starving, thus in a starvation ketosis). Again , not a vegan, i have *naturally* gravitated to a very plant based diet because its just so much easier to be keto this way. For breakfast i eat a mixture of nuts/fatty seeds: pecans, macadmias, coconut, pumpkin, sacha seeds, etc. I also make delicious brownies with 100% chocolate and avocado base, sweetners are really advanced now and you cant even tell its ketogenic. The irony is you hear "low carb" you think person is eating steaks and chicken, but a keto diet is often plant based because its just loads easier to eat a high fat, moderate protein intake that way. Again, not vegan, i eat eggs, heavy cream (great keto tool) and such but a more ketogenic low carb diet is super easy to do if you are vegan because protein has to be restricted anyway.

Congrats on the first 15 years. I don't agree with you about too much protein though.. i didn't mind my fat to protein ratio at all, and probably have been eating more protein than fat.. still lost 100lbs and have kept it off.. still have all the benefits of keto, as a meat eater. Same goes for other meat eater keto people who have done well. I really don't know where your information comes from, but congrats on being able to pull off vegan keto nonetheless, many people haven't figured that out yet.

Hi. It depends what you are using the diet for. Often ppl conflate "ketogenic" with "low carb" when these aren't the same. The ketosis is specifically important for neurological issues and cancer (hypothetically), whereas the low carb/high protein portion is all you need to worry about for weight contorl. I specifically said i only care about keto (as in high fat/moderate protein) for my mood disorder, it does nothing much to help my weight. Your experience of superior wt control on a higher protein, meat based diet is pretty common relative to the fat based, lower protein ketogenic diet. I'm also not vegan which i made clear, i merely said if one is targeting ketosis for neurological issues, this is vastly easier on a plant based diet as trying to do a normal meat based LC diet will trash ketosis. Again, ketosis has nothing to do with the wt loss portion that can be obtained -often with superior results - through a high protein low carb diet such as meat and vegetables.

@unnaturalvegan I've been mostly vegan for 11 years and went low carb high fat vegan about two months ago. The weight loss is a bonus, but it wasn't the main reason I did it. I have narcoleptic episodes which are affected by high amounts of carbs, especially starchy carbs, and some people with neurological disorders like narcolepsy and epilepsy have known this for a long time. Since going HFLC I can get through a day without falling asleep, I can go shopping and not end up spaced out because of the flickering of the over head lights, I'm not getting sleep paralysis and hallucinations anymore which means my quality of sleep is amazingly better. Yes, I see a lot of people go crazy over counting macros, but you get that kind of zealousness in any "diet" and personally, I don't count anything, not calories, not macros, because I come from a history of eating disorders I'm not interested in starting up again. I eat a lot of nuts, a lot of tofu, a lot of salad and green vegetables, and sometimes I'm slightly higher carb than the perceived ideal of 20-30g per day, if I were to guess I'd say I average 50 on a strict day and 70-100 on an indulgent day, and it's still low enough to help my medical issues AND lose weight. The important thing to remember is that people often see rapid initial weight loss due to losing water weight and no longer eating calorie dense carbs like bread and pasta, but once thats over, I'ver personally found I'm on that healthy 2lbs or so lost a week. I can't eat rice or wheat so I don't miss them, but potatoes and hummus are total high carb day indulgences.

Keto is not a cure for anything, but I would recommend it for anyone with diabetes. Especially if they are insulin dependent like me. Type 1 diabetic 14 years here. It helps to regulate blood sugars and reduce the amount of insulin you need. I do dirty, lazy keto so it's basically an if it fits your macros approach. No calorie, fat, or protein counting and no worries about ingredients so long as the carbs are low. I also take a multivitamin and fish oil because I don't like like seafood. I also use Cron-O-Meter so I'm pretty good about hitting my micros most days. The great thing about keto is that it is so main-stream now that there are more options in grocery stores for packaged foods and you can make almost any food most people eat into a keto dish.

"Ketogenic diet is bad because it is full of saturated fat." Really? Is this your reasoning? I started watching your videos because you have seemed to back up your videos with a scientific way of thinking. Why does this keto diet have to be full of saturated fat? It is a choice. You can choose to eat salads with olive oil. You can cook vegetable based meals (like mediterrainian style)or soups with olive oil and eat or drink that. There are options with unsaturated fat. Like avocado, the supreme vegan fruit.There is always a way if you want to make it work. I know keto works because I have a much healthier body since I started a keto vegan diet. With regular vegan diet I am always hungry so sometimes I choose to do a keto version for a week or so and they are like a break from this food centered lives we lead. And I yes I am alive. Thanks.

She said most typical keto diet meal plans she found were high in saturated fat (coconut oil or animal products), so if you want one with low saturated fat you have to do some more research or make up your own meal plans I guess. I might try it out myself. With 'healthier body' do you mean less weight? The weight is my main issue, I did not lose weight after I became a vegan so I have to try something new.

Auden Finch If your point is that vegans should just eat the normal omnivorous diet just so they're like everyone else, why? Vegans have genuine reasons to adhere to this sort diet, like ethics. Things just about one of the pettiest critiques I've heard against veganism.

Okay this is completely off topic but I have a question about choline. I track what I eat using cronometer and I constantly struggle with getting enough choline, 450mg a day seems almost impossible to reach. I'm always at 200-300mg. I used cronometer to check how much choline I was getting back when I ate meat and dairy and the results were the same, around 200mg. How does one get enough choline from food? Especially as a vegan.

I'd be really interested to see an update on how you did. I find these things fascinating too. It's not for me though. I did some weird nearly all fat thing many many years ago when I was uneducated and desperate (-before I went vegan, I remember it containing macadamia nuts, brie, peanutbutter and like a butter sauce.. o_O ), and anyway a couple of days into it I was violently sick many many times, like I kept throwing up bile for the better part of a day, and then felt completely fine as soon as I had carbs.

Thanks for the help Swayze!

this diet takes weeks for your body to adapt. If you do this for only a day you will only feel really awful (this stage is called the keto-flu and happens when your body figures out how to adapt to using fat as fuel). Your body doesn't get well adapted until months of ketosis. Not to mention if your a vegan I would not even consider this diet. Vegan proteins and fat are considerably high in PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) which can have serious health risks. Yes doctors recommend them a lot (specifically the omega 3s) because it reduces cholesterol but they fail to inform that it also reduces HDL which is cholesterol that is very good for you. This diet really only works with most of your fat coming from saturated fats, which contrary to popular belief, are very healthy, especially in the context of a ketogenic diet because it is the fat that your body can readily convert to energy. The person in the video needs to do more research on the interaction between insulin and saturated fats because it is definitely not the same on a keto diet vs a conventional diet.

I want to try this once I'm not pregnant/breastfeeding but in the form of a fast, rather than a diet. Tim Ferris writes about it in Tools of the Titans, it's a really interesting read and I'd love to hear your thoughts on his ideas of keto. I feel my best eating a high fat diet, so I thought adding some fats into a fast like a keto diet would be perfect

You are right in that a keto diet is not proven to help with things like cancer or heart disease ; however it IS helpful for things like thyroid disease, PCOS, insulin resistance. obviously, you can't eat "no" carbs. It's impossible. I only eat carbs on the days that I do weight training; on those days I will add something like quinoa, brown rice, some fruit.... but if I'm not doing weights that day, I limit the carbs. I don't follow keto 100% of the time, but more like 85% of the time. I don't always measure everything, I don't get obsessive, I'm not shortchanged on things like calcium or potassium.... so I don't see what the problem is. Obviously keto is not going to cure your cancer. But I do recommend doing some research on how it helps people with hormonal issues such as PCOS which can cause insulin resistance. unfortunately, I do not get the privilege of eating acai bowls and quinoa salads and lentil soup whenever I damn well please. on a low-carb day I will eat both animal and plant based proteins (tuna, eggs, chicken, turkey, seitan, tofu, nuts, nut butters...) and lots of veggies (spinach, asparagus, onions, collards, bok choy, celery, olives, mushrooms, peppers, zuchinni, cucumbers, kim chi, salsa, tomato sauce). Not sure what's wrong with that. If you're like me and your body doesn't use carbs the way it should, that's how you should eat.
