"Higher cost" That doesnt mean anything. We already pay 400%+ over the cost to produce the shoes we already have. We could literally buy these at the same cost we do now, but companies would have to be happy with 300%+ and not 400%.

Not to mention economies of scale, 13? 30? Workers doing stuff by hand could never keep up with automated processes of this kind (I already seey ways that could be automated to scale up in bulk) Let alone what happens if you get a better strain of mycelium/mushroom for the task!

You're comparing with western regulation such an example luxury brand sell snake or crocodile leather made in Indonesia with cost around Euro 300 and they sell it in Europe let's say Paris such as L*uboutin and such after branding for more than Euro 5000, that's one of my former French friends does. While my former Dutch friend I lived in Europe 2002-2010 bought a leather bag for work for around Euro 150 in Cibaduyut leather smith center of West Java of small town Garut just outside Bandung and everyone in Europe thought the value is more than Euro 1000 and the quality is top notch after 15 years still looks perfect

The wood chip substrate is not cleaned with steam. It is sterilized (autoclaved) with saturated steam to kill any other bacteria, fungi and their spores that could spoil a bag. Only then are the spores of the mushroom they grow added.

So what exactly is your argument considering rubber also comes from a plant as well ?
@u.synlig
@u.synlig 3 жыл бұрын
river nile bank nya om No argument against the use of rubber, _per se._ Whether the use of rubber product is congruous to the aims of this progressive enterprise, depends upon the rubber’s source. - Is it from a large-scale, corporate plantation, many of which have been known to employ environmentally-devastating deforestation practices (including heavy usage of herbicides), to continually expand a profit base? - Is it from farms that practice soil-depleting monoculture, year upon year - to maximize profit from a single crop - thus threatening bio-diversity, and increasing the need for soil additives that do not respect natural cycles? -Or, is attention paid, to source sustainably produced rubber, from ethically working operations?
@pakde8002
@pakde8002 3 жыл бұрын
Good question but you don't specify natural plant based rubber, which Indonesia also produces, or synthetic petroleum based rubber. Assuming you're concerned about the latter? Edit...ok I see your follow up. The large rubber plantations are a thing of the past so I'm guessing it's mostly small scale farmers in mixed forest cultivation based on what I've seen in Indonesia. The focus for plantations is all towards palm oil these days.

Leather is a natural by-product of the meat industry. Leather good manufacturers are the reason the hides of various animals are not piled into huge waste which would be burned and effect the environment. We create beautiful products with hides - which makes the leather products sustainable. In the process we help in circular fashion. On the other hand "Vegan Leather" is actually plastic which will never be as sustainable as Genuine Leather. Using PU and calling it Vegan Leather just effects the image of Genuine Leather Products. There is no such thing as "Vegan Leather".

Is it as durable as leather? Is it as strong? As customizable? Can it be applied for the same products? Also car seats, sofa's? Does it have the same look and feel? If any of these questions is 'no', I'm afraid it will never come close to replacing leather. It can only limit the production of leather somewhat. Maybe by 10% or so. But nevertheless, it's an interesting product!
@kairon156

Mushrooms are a fungi which respire: they take up oxygen and produce carbon dioxide so their not free of carbon emissions. Plus raising animals isn't that bad for carbon emotions sense most bits of an animal will be used in one way or another. It's not like leather will be the Only thing a animal gets raised for, ideally it'll be raised for it's meat and getting leather is a bonus or vice versa. I will argue sense animal byproducts are used in many things that their not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
