I made "salmon" with carrots but used a different recipe. I wrapped the carrots in nori before putting them in the oven with the salt. Then I used a different marinade, no liquid smoke, but flaxseed oil and some other ingredients I cant remember. It tasted just like the real thing!

Why would she eat it if she has a moral problem with that? It's like saying go kill your friend, when he annoys you so much. How is that hard to understand or viewed badly?

People who keep commenting about why you are calling it smoked salmon when it isn’t, doesn’t understand that it is a mimic for the flavor. If you titled the video carrots and tomatoes no one would know what you were trying to accomplish. It is completely ok to call something vegan smoked salmon because the “vegan” part LITERALLY MEANS THIS IS NOT REAL SMOKED SALMON don’t get butt hurt over a name.

Yeah, but doesn't that also imply that fish is a delicious thing. I mean she doesn't try to mimic the flavor of trash, because trash is unpalatable, and yet people are trying to say that fish, meats, milk and egg are disgusting, even though they all taste delicious.

the problem is trying to pass this off as a substitute for real salmon... it has literally nothing in common with salmon. theres no protein at all. its just bread and a bit of vegtables.
@cizzlebot6 жыл бұрын
@Karlton est - No one is saying those things *taste* disgusting. Everyone knows they taste good, hence why people try to make vegan alternatives that resemble the real thing. However, what's "disgusting" about the real thing is that it comes from a thinking, feeling creature which has been exploited or killed against its will, and that does not sit well with a lot of people. No creature should have to suffer for our *temporary* enjoyment. Hope that clarifies things! :)

It felt like the real thing ! I messed up the cuts of the carrots so it definitely looked like carrots 😂, but taste and texture was on par with the best lox I've had. It doesn't do well as a stand alone to be "smoked salmon", but with all the fixings, it's PERFECT.

madeline vicioso use kosher salt it's pretty cheap usually $3 or less for a 3-5 pound box depending on where you get it, diamond usually has the bigger of the boxes for cheap. And this is what you would use it for, and salting water when boiling and such and save your good salt for finishing of dishes
@perhoshai8 жыл бұрын
If you make your carrots with rough salt, you can actually store the used salt in an airtight container. The way I prefer doing the carrots is to let them sit in an 0,8% salt water overnight (0.8dl salt in 1l water) and the next day boil the carrots in the same salt water until carrots are done :-)

I need to give it another go! I haven't had it in a long time, since before I was even vegan. At the time I thought it was weird but maybe it's just because I was so used to the real thing.

After seeing your video with the super appetizing carrot "smoked salmon", I had to try it. I have to say, this tastes nothing like a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Good to try new things though and I appreciate the effort involved making these videos. Thanks for your hard work.

Vegan logic: Salmon is orange - Carrots are orange, so they can replace salmon. Spot on nutrition knowledge
@lillyflower34156 жыл бұрын
What.. does this have to do with nutrition? It's about making it TASTE like salmon. Which, by the way, it does.

How carrot-like is it? I hate the taste of cooked carrots. Also, kite hill makes a great vegan cream cheese.
@SarahsVeganKitchen8 жыл бұрын
I could only tell it was carrots when I ate it alone. Combined with the other things, not so much. I also hate when carrots are mushy and super sweet.
@austingulotta98178 жыл бұрын
Okay, cool! Thanks for the reply. I'll give the recipe a shot some time soon, but I'm quite terrified about them having too strong of that cooked carrot-ness to them. I've never been able to escape it! Except in vegan nacho cheese :P

For anyone wondering!: i did the carrot thing by putting a carrot in a plate with a bit of water and salt(just a pinch) and "marinated" it for just like 5 minutes and it turned out tasting GREAT and same texture and taste as salmon!!! Also, i was craving a bagel but had no cream cheese so i used an avocado with a pinch of sugar and S&P on it and there wasnt a big difference! Yummy

Thank you! I lost my vegan lox recipe recently. I grew up Jewish in a Jewish neighborhood, and loved lox and cream cheese on a bagel. Having made the carrot lox (w/liquid smoke), I can testify that it is as good as the real lox. I was kvelling!

The imagination of these vegans seems amazing... Just imagine the mental derangement you need to be capable of to put tomatoes or carrots on bread and then imagine it is salmon lol😂😂

I made the carrot lax just as you did and it turned out INEDIBLE because it was so salty! But on the second try I just boiled carrots in salt water, sliced them and then put them to marinade and it turned out fine
@Blaaahhhhhhhh-z3p8 жыл бұрын
in order to make it more cream cheese like you must add lemon juice (fresh) or apple cider vinegar. the lemon with Provide the base for sourness and the apple cider vinegar will provide over the course of its transition a more powerful cream cheese flavor and smell. they work incredibly well together. I'd say adding about 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar 1 tsp lemon or more depending on your liking. love the vid.

I did end up adding some lemon juice, nutritional yeast and herbs and it was so good! Next time I'll try the ACV.

These things confuse me. If you go vegan, just eat vegan things? why mimic the flavour of meat when you could just eat something made or modified to be vegan? it tastes way better than weird knockoff salmon
@ryalau72116 жыл бұрын
@Robert Medak it never tastes anything like the real thing tho? from what ive tried at least. the texture is always weird and the flavor is off

I like the way you really go into what you like and do not like about the recipes and the results. Smoked salmon is something I'll miss but to be honest I'm not sure I'm going to try to kid myself by making carrot taste like it. I think it will just remind me of the yummy lox I'm not having :) The whole fake cheese thing is a turn-off for now although I love snacking on roasted cashews and almonds. I can see how the liquid smoke is a crucial ingredient in both recipes. I'll add that the first time I went vegan I failed because I did not make/eat enough substitutes. Mostly tofu and that got old really quickly. Now I'm having TVP, tempeh, tofy, quorn, gardein, seitan and of course lots of veggies, legumes etc. It's been easier to combine vegan eating with family dinner time. So maybe I need to give the carrot lox a try.

What is up with vegans that still want their meals to taste like an animal?
@thatonekid17326 жыл бұрын
I mean, they don't not eat meat because of the taste, mostly because of moral (or health) reasons. Most people like the taste of meat/cheese etc :P

You need to eat real salmon and seafood.It's tasty!
Why call it salmon or steak or hotdogs etc. They're carrots. What's the matter, vegans. Tired of grass and grains so you try to mimic the flavors of meat?
@lauranichols20278 жыл бұрын
Nik O... The amount of stupidity in your comment, lol. I'm not vegan but just because someone chooses to become vegan it doesn't stop them from craving foods they grew up on, or missing certain non-vegan dishes, so they make vegan alternatives so they can continue to not harm animals and eat foods that are similar to the ones they enjoyed before becoming vegan...
@lauranichols20278 жыл бұрын
Nik O , and does that make them weak because they miss salmon, steak, hotdogs?!
@Mark-im8hl8 жыл бұрын
Laura Nichols The irony in your comment. So they go vegan and still crave the flavor of "non-vegan" dishes. Jesus you can't even say the word meat. Just listen to how this sounds, vegans don't want to harm animals but miss their flavor lmao
@lauranichols20278 жыл бұрын
Mark Alvarez... I'm not going to say "meat" because vegan dishes is about any animal/sentient being products and a non-vegan dish could be something that substitutes eggs/dairy and has no meat at all (vegan cheese, eggs, etc). The irony?! It isn't about not enjoying the taste of meat/animal products it's about not wanting to harm any living/sentient beings. You can still love bacon but you don't want to kill a pig.. it really isn't ironic, it's ethical. That's why vegans don't eat or use any products (makeup, toiletries, clothing, etc) that harm/use animals/sentient beings. I'm not even vegan but it really isn't that hard of a concept to grasp if you have half a brain!
@ltgriffith858 жыл бұрын
Taking the moral/ethical reason as to why someone would want to be vegan completely out of the equation... why still call it "salmon?" I understand people choose to follow a vegan diet because they do not agree with how animals are raised or how animal-based products are made. No judgement - you do what's best for you! I am confused about why people still call it "vegan chicken/beef/eggs/cheese/etc." Why not call it "smoked carrots with cashew spread on a bagel?" I would still try it. Sounds delicious. If people who choose to go vegan want to separate themselves from the world of animal-based foods, why the insistence on still using animal-based names? Again, truly, no judgement against those who give up animal products OR those who continue to eat them - it's just honest curiosity. :)
