I remember when I used to be a fan of Alyse Parker (formerly Raw Alignment) when I was 16-17 a few years ago. I watched all her videos, and I thought that her moving to Hawaii was so amazing and inspirational. At the time, I was working a minimum wage job in high school, and I remember how she made her lifestyle seem so easy and affordable because she was on food stamps living in a van. I was naive and thought that her life was perfect and realistic. Plus, her diet of papayas and mangoes 24/7 led me to unhealthy eating habits. I really appreciate you for using your platform to spread awareness about the BS that youtubers and influencers try to pull. I think it could save a lot of young, impressionable people from falling into their traps. Your videos are a breath of fresh air, and I've been a subscriber for almost 3 years.

Thats correct! Influencers pay for their lifestyles with YOUR money. Influencers been doing this since the 70's in Hawaii ( and earlier!). Also, this a bad time to even think of relocating to the islands. The cost of stuff is only part of the story: unless you're looking to share accommodations, rental units are few and far between...jobs are even non existent, with the advent of covid-19. And if you are really thinking of camping/living on the beach.....think again! There are lots of Hawaii's homeless that are standing in line ahead of you. Paradise to some....a nightmare to many more! There are agencies who will assist: possibly with food stamps more likely with a one way plane ticket back to your home state! There are many states that will tell you, you can "Live" on the beach, and take advantage of public facilities. That is easier said than done. Stay where you are...at least for the time being! Or at least purchase a open return ticket and stash it with a trusted family member, or friend! State assistance is stretched to the limit currently. All you might do is anger those whom you ask to help, or worse yet, anger those locals who need assistance, and have been waiting months...even years for food, shelter and clothing. Check out the quarantine rules for Hawaii! And mahalo to Anna!

I quit my job and I moved to Hawaii. Spontaneously. A couple of years ago. I did it by saving up first and making plans to visit a friend/airbnb's. Then when I decided to stay, I found a minimum wage job, roommate/place of my own and later a higher paying 9-5 job. I stayed for a year and, believe me, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows like an influencer might portray. For me, it was better than that, it was real life. Though it was challenging, it made me grow in unthinkable ways. I cried, I laughed, I felt alive, I got my heart broken. I learned about myself, about others, developed a whole new appreciation for Mother Earth. I explored a new way of life, culture and met some kind-hearted people. But the thing about traveling to another country, city or island is that it will never fix your life or make your problems effortlessly disappear. Because, if I learned one thing, it is wherever you go, there you are. And that will always be real life.

As a Native Hawaiian, gentrification is a big problem. We cannot even live here, a lot of my family has moved to the mainland. It is common to live with family in multigenerational homes. (This is why travel right now during Covid-19 is frowned upon by the Natives bc we cannot afford NOT to work, yet we have to in order to survive. It is dangerous bc most of us live with our kupuna (elders) and they are more susceptible to becoming seriously ill). I mean move here if you truly desire it, but take the time to understand the culture, the negatives, pros and cons, and the twisted history of how Hawai'i was overthrown before you move here or vacation here. It is better appreciated if you take the time to understand the culture of Hawai'i and your sense of place rather than just trying to "move to paradise" with an entitled attitude.

Influencers are really skewing peoples' perspectives on realistic ways of life, even in the most mundane ways. My friends think they've wasted a day off just because they didn't go for a run, take a shower, go to the gym, do meal prep, walk the dog, go to lunch with friends, do another workout, and clean the house all in one day. It's like, you realize the people you're seeing on instagram and tiktok have these lifestyles because they either don't have a traditional job, or they do and only post the one day out of the week they're able to do this, right? Don't beat yourself up just because "all you did" was do laundry and clean the house.

I have no clue, but I think maybe lots of the influencers with this sort of image come from very wealthy families. Some of the teenagers I studied with at high school whose families had a lot of money, were posting pictures on their own of amazing places and super luxurious houses and they were actually on a family holiday. Some of them still do that in their 20's and now have a lot of followers. Especially girls with model like bodies who liked photography and had easy access to very good cameras and phones. There is nothing wrong with that, but I think many people are not aware of how natural a lot of this has come to them. I don't mean their lives are easy, just that this kind of circumstances for them to take very beautiful impressionable pictures come easier from a very young age. Many of these girls started going several days a week to the gym when we were 13, had chefs living with them in the same home, had parents that could and would pay for nutritionists or fitness trainers, had access to the best quality food. It's easier to find time to work not only on your health but also on your looks when you don't need to clean your house or do as much everyday stuff because you or your family can pay for other people to do it. I don't mean there is anything bad about that, their parents probably worked a lot and had studied a lot. Most of these kids have studied a lot to follow this path and be able to keep the lifestyle working for top companies. I'm just saying nobody should compare, because we don't know what's behind. And yes, some of them just live a different reality, with different worries and different priorities. That doesn't mean they're happier.

@stephlyndsey39323 жыл бұрын
You couldn't have said it better! People really do grow up differently and thats why at the age of 18 some people are so far ahead of others, not because they're better than someone else or they've got some "secret sauce" its simply because their parents set them up. Not everyone gets set up if you catch my drift! Its really not worth comparing!

I live on Oahu and I fall into a middle ground category. I moved here with my parents when I was 10. So, I wasn’t born here, but I was only in 5th grade when I got here so I deeply feel at home here. I’m in my late 20s now and have moved to the mainland and back to Hawaii twice in my adult life. I love it here so much and it is really hard for me to live anywhere else. It is morally conflicting though. Everything you said was spot-on. Locals are being priced out of their homes. My parents (not Hawaiian) had to move back to the mainland a few years ago because they couldn’t afford it here anymore. So many of the kids I went to high school with have moved to the mainland so they can afford to raise their children, leaving their parents/grandparents/homes behind. There is a SEVERE homeless crisis here. There is also a ton of theft, home invasion, traffic, and many other unsightly features. It’s really sad. But, the beauty is also a very real thing. The beaches, hikes, and perfect weather are all pretty great! The only thing you slightly missed was the spider thing. We do have spiders but they are not the problem. Cockroaches and centipedes are 1000x worse. I know my comment is jumbled but I want you to know that I appreciate your videos and agree with almost everything you say!

Yeah that is because most social media influencers have narcissistic tendencies and would never admit that they are in some way unqualified to give people advice and it makes people with real credentials look bad. For example Dr. Garth Davis did a video with Fully Raw Kristina and later she made some pretty pseudoscientific videos. For someone who is a professional and looking to advance in their career that could make them look bad by associating with these people. Honestly I think a lot of these social media influencers are so young and so uneducated they don't even know how to sort through the data or know how to find qualified experts to help them with their videos.

When I was in high school, I constantly felt alienated, like I was the only other person my age having deep thoughts about life and the universe, and I didn't know any other vegans. When I found Claire's account in 2016 I finally felt like someone got me. I even met her at a meetup she hosted right before she moved to Hawaii for the first time and felt so jealous, thinking that she was going to be living this dream life of smoothie bowls and jungle adventures with like-minded people and manifesting miracles all the time. I was burnt out from school and contemplated not going to college for a while and trying my luck as a yoga teacher in Hawaii. However, I eventually became disillusioned with her around the time that the original "you" video was posted, as she seemed increasingly out of touch with reality. She would go on long social media breaks and then return 2 months later claiming that she had a new epiphany and was more in touch with life/herself than ever before, except she kept repeating the exact same things over and over again. I eventually unfollowed, and thank god, because now she's posting anti-vaxx bs and hosting a local retreat to launch her new intuitive eating ebook even though we're literally in the middle of a pandemic. Also, I went to Kauai last summer on vacation, and while it was a beautiful trip, I'm so glad I didn't move there on a whim because I would've been miserable, and I could never live there long-term. Island fever is real, but the lifestyles these people sell are not. TLDR: Claire was sort of nice to follow once upon a time, but I'm glad that in the end, I didn't fall for her Hawaii lifestyle and manipulative influencer tactics and went to college instead.

@ghost robles that is terrible and irresponsible advice. You are not OP's therapist, you don't know what kind of eating disorder OP has/had/is-recovering-from and it has been proven time and time and time and time again that people with marihuana with THC can have devastating effects on people with predisposition to mental illness which ironically, are a big chunk of marihuana users trying to calm down anxiety, and which OP already has if they've had an eating disorder which is by itself a horrendous mental illness and does not necessarily have to be related to not feeling hunger.

You do not know me, nor do you know where I am from, my studies or my qualifications yet you go ahead and say I do not know about marihuana, either way, I am yet to see one single study that demonstrates positive benefits for THC on mental illness. Agree, I feel like this opinion has become a little bit more popular lately in these communities, in contrast to 2016-2018 which were peak lifestyle/hustle/“manifestation” culture. I live in Eastern Europe and all my life I heard how shitty of a place this is(from foreigners and locals), but as I have gotten older and due to the recent social American crisis when pretty much the whole facade fell off on the front page of the world, I think that you just gotta make the best of what you have. I like the mild consumerism, economic conditions regarding food and living expenses, I don’t think I wanna leave this “depressing poverty stricken” lands to be honest (common conception about these lands pretty much due to the exterior image left by communism mostly).

Maybe influencers don’t want their followers to know how they live their life is because it’s like “the secret sauce.” And she may say in vague terms how she or others earn their money, but they don’t really want everyone to know her tactics, because what would be the point? Her mysterious lifestyle would have no more mystery if she “spilled the tea” about all of her earnings. But this is just my theory.

Thought I would share my experience. People have been dropping out and heading to Hawaii to "live free" since the 60's, its not a new phenomenon but I do wonder how social media has affected it! Back in 2007 (pre-influencer era), I dropped out of college and moved to Hawaii. While I fell into it, many people thought I was crazy when I went. Thankfully I do think the majority of people don't buy into the dream life that is portrayed. I went because at first I was doing a research project on sustainability and intentional communities. The areas surrounding Pahoa (which is economically depressed due to the active volcano nearby which erupts onto these land parcels and drives down the price- so there is still a lot of hold outs from the '60s around- and also just people who march to the beat of their own drum or who are a bit mentally unstable) on the Big Island had (and still have) many farms and intentional communities that have internship programs you can pay to attend or free work-trade programs. Initially, I had paid $700 for the program- which included rent and rides to/from the airport and access to the food from the farm (with the support of some money I had from my dad's passing- not trust fund level or anything) and I had planned to stay for the month. Once I got there, it was easy to get a work trade position and many people around me had food stamps, due to having no income, due to work trading. This is really common in that area and there are a few areas on the other islands such as Maui and Kauai (look up Kalalau Valley for an interesting history of hippies trying to live off the land) that have a similar culture. Hitchhiking is common on every island, it’s a part of the culture and is thought to be mostly safe. Anyhow, due to my grief (from my dad's passing) and how young and naive I was, I got really sucked into the whole law of attraction, raw food, free living etc culture around there. Which led to my choice to drop out and stay. I was lucky, as you say because I did have safety money in my bank account and I was very careful about what I did and who I spent my time with, and I had a great time and eventually I decided to go back to school on the mainland with my savings and some loans. There are a lot of not so good places to end up on the island without that- there are drugs on the island, cults, and there used to be areas where it was dangerous to go due to illegal mmj plots. I saw many people arrive on the island, families even, with no plans or money, sometimes they were lucky but it was not always a good time. There are lots of camps with illegal structures (some are beautiful) that are not always sanitary or secure (I witnessed many thefts), there's a fire ant issue (so you don't want to just camp anywhere because its possible to wake up with burning ants crawling all over you), staph infections are extremely common (especially in a community that does not believe in anti-biotic use), and there is also a parasite called rat-lung worm that lives in the produce- which I saw a few people get sick from. Often times, 18-25-year-olds arrive, spend all their money surviving, get sick, and then get their family to bail them out with a plane ticket home. I had an incredible time and I still love the islands, but it is a true wild west when you go without funds. Better to go with money and a plan in my opinion. Also, although it's lovely, it has it's problems just like everywhere else and is not a true paradise.

At this point it should be required (well really highly suggested) that people understand the history of Hawai'i as a stolen nation and illegal state before traveling or moving there. It would provide all the context needed to understand why the islands are used by our government and influencers alike. Also wanted to add, Hawaii only became a "state" in 1959. So maybe people should let that also sink in when speaking about displaced and marginalized Native Hawaiians....

Hey Anna! First of all, great video. You touched on a lot of really important topics. Secondly as someone who moved to Hawaii I'd like to add that I've met both influencers you referred to in this video. I won't go to negatively say anything about them but rather that lifestyle in general. EVERYTHING that is mildly holistic or ego posting in an "I'm divine your not" kind of way is what gets documented. When I met Clair she had honestly meant a lot to me and when I saw her and hugged her I actually cried (not gonna downplay that, I think she did inspire me in someways to be closer with nature even if her intentions or directions are manipulative to her brand). Her friend (also another influencer) without asking me pulled out a phone and started snapping a pretty vulnerable moment. I then asked her to take some on my phone, cause like, how is that a good deed at all to just keep for her own profit? So I got some pics and realized a lot living here. Manyyyy of these women have eating disorders and live in an environment which idolizes plant based eating so they don't have to deal with conflict. Many of alternative lifestyle livers aren't good with dealing with conflict in general. I'm going to continue in another comment cause this is super long.

This has already been mentioned in the comments, but moving to Hawaii is not a great idea. Ever since white settlers originally "discovered" Hawaii and other islands in the Pacific, the indigenous people have consistently exploited by these white settlers. The US colonized Hawaii and eventually seized control of the island during the reign of Queen Lili'uokalani. She was held as a prisoner of war and had her nation stripped from her. A great book on the history of the annexation of Hawaii is her own memoir called Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen. A great read that she published in 1893, five years after she had been overthrown.

I will never forget actually living in Laos and reading a ridiculous blog post of a young, white, female travel blogger bragging about partying in Vang Vieng, an area ravaged by drunken gap year tourists. So many people don't realise how easy it is to fake luxury and ease when you live overseas in countries that are relatively cheap compared to a savings account in USD, or renting a house in Hawaii for a day to take a bunch of photo shoots in with different styling and times of day to fake content over weeks. Part 2: What you'll ultimately discover is that a lot of these big name influencers have a really different lifestyle. A influencer "travel photography" person tried to scam me on North Shore and a week after that happened and I found out he was an alcoholic living in his car and that he was arrested and on the news for truely disrespecting the locals here. He was released and used the publicity to promote his instagram page. This person was sooo not in sync with reality. How is he so successful then? He's in HUGE debt and bought a kind of camera you basically can afford only in Hollywood, and spends most of his time reaching out to people and brands on IG. He doesn't care about being poor or people, he's psychotic drug is driven by exposure and recognition. Another point I'd like to bring up is that many of these female influencers that live in Hawaii and do nothing are female in my opinion because that's the market they have and less people will allow a guy to mooch of them. Kevin Paris once tried to get me into a scam (idk if it was the water thing but it was all like "escape the 9-5" etc). It makes me REALLY doubt the thought leaders that I actually do love that hang out with these people like Chelsea Kauai. However, she is also the only born and raised influencer from this batch, and it goes to show how few these people actually bother to connect deeply with natives. Ultimately I'm putting time into this, because people like Platiful and Jay Alvarrez did in someway effect my thought process to move to Hawaii when I was 21. 6 months into being around all these people (which was crazy cool to me at the time) and beautiful beaches but only watching people live inside a perceived anxiety bubble I fell in love with an engineer and now we live great lives away from all this "emotional masturbation" of this sensual hippie passion pursuing bs. To be fair, not many of the people that live in these areas have probably ever had a real job. Many of them who have real jobs have insane stress from lack of knowledge to do such things. Many of them have a judgement about people which is derived from not really knowing struggle, and it makes me sad because they really do think people are lesser versions of them. There's another funny aspect of this which I would be happy to provide you with information on if you'd like, which is why so many of these Hawaii influencers are mormon. Nothing bashing, just some surprising logical information. If so let me know an email and I'll write you. Otherwise keep up the good work. Best! Aviva

There are SO many Mormon influencers because Mormon culture puts a massive emphasis on beauty. Women are mothers, wives, and ornamental figures. I work for a guy who owns a few penthouses in the BelAir area here in LA. Most of his last’s year’s revenue came from renting these places by the day or even a few hours at the time. Influencers often rent high end mansions for a few hours while in town, take a zillion of pics and go back to their Log Inn or hostel. They also rent Maserati’s or Ferraris by the hour $250 and usually drive Hollywood Blvd and other important avenues in the city to show off! You can rent a Yacht in Marina del Rey for 15 minutes, etc, you get the picture! You can enter ANY casino in Las Vegas for free while staying at any cheap hotel and eat buffet 😅🤷🏼♀️ Rent a limo and put cheap champagne on empty bottles of expensive ones, I’ve seen it all, it’s ridiculous the lengths some people would stretch to pretend they are someone 😂 Stop believing in the “lavish” lifestyle of people who are probably broke... and don’t even get me start on how much drugs and alcohol are involved.

I would just add some reasons as to why you shouldn't want to do what Claire or other "exotic location influencers" do. What do her posts actually do for people but lead them to more insecurity and consumerism? Matter of fact, in a way, she represents part of the problem with consumer culture, which is "here is something that you don't have, and if you didn't even know it existed you wouldn't feel any need for it anyway". Whether it is the lifestyle, the body, the """spirituality""", ... Why do we give influencers a platform? Why do we put them on a podium? Is it because they're doing honorable things that should be seen, appreciated, looked up to and imitated? How is gentrifying Hawaii, setting a specific beauty and lifestyle standard and saying privileged people stuff any of those things? Ok, ok, privileged white people deserve things to pick their brains with as well, you're right, for sure, they don't have to care about humanitarian things - but it wouldn't be that bad if you ask me - but my gosh lol if spirituality is really what they want to learn about maybe pick a book, go to a temple idk don't be reading quotes on Instagram and memorizing someone else's rituals for your own aesthetic reasons, there's nothing spiritual about that ahaha I think what really baffles me the most about these influencers and their followers is the lack of self awareness istg

You made a good point, which made me think about how this whole influencer thing is like how brands used to say we're not selling a product, we're selling a "lifestyle", obviously to sell their product like jeans or whatever. I lived in Hawaii for college. It is definitely not paradise everyday. It’s beautiful but has a lot of poverty, Food is extremely expensive, you work hard to afford it and then the days you have off of work it rains and you can’t even go to the beach.

I was sooo close to doing something like this a few years ago. I wanted to sell my car and get a van to live a permanent vacation lifestyle. I had no idea how I would've made it work. But the truth is, I was just looking for an escape from my life. I was incredibly depressed, my home situation was bad for my mental health and I was at a job with workplace bullying and I felt so done. Over the last couple years I ended up moving out into a sharehouse, getting a new job, took time to work on myself and am going to be starting a course this year. I'm in such a great place and I'm SO glad I didn't just run away, I no doubt would've ended up in a worse off situation with nothing to my name but a shitty van. Which when you reeeally think about what lifestyle it doesn't seem so glamourous.

I dropped out of college 2 years ago and moved to Hawaii to become a live-in nanny. I got to live on the water in a mansion and drive a Mercedes. I had no bills. Didn’t have to pay for groceries. But I did work a shit ton for hardly any money. Now I’m back in my hometown and I’m completely screwed. Don’t have a degree, don’t have any money, don’t have a car, and am living with my parents. However. Do I think it was worth it? Yup. I 100% think it was worth it. I had a once in a lifetime opportunity and I took it. I moved out to a tropical island I’d never been to all by myself and had the most insane experiences that I will treasure for the rest of my life

As someone who has suffered from ED’s and has received treatment, claire should not be offering advice on intuitive eating🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ and if she is then make it free. It’s dangerous to have someone promoting what worked for them when they have no professional experience and have a history with disordered eating!! Lots of times ED’s are tricky and deceptive and you can assume you are recovered but a dietitian or therapist might look at you and know you still have diet culture and behaviors actively going on in your life. I used to look up to Claire and Allie a lot but now have lost tons of respect. Don’t profit off of peoples vulnerability. Eating disorders especially...I would never offer advice now to others because my mindset still is healing and I’m assuming hers is too. Many of my therapists and dietitians have had an ED and that is what motivated them to go to school and help others...but that is so different than what Claire is doing. If she likes cooking then I guess a recipe e-book is fine, but the disordered eating advice and intuitive eating stuff just isn’t acceptable in my option. Thanks for your wonderful video!!

My friend lived in LA and hung out with her a couple times and said she was “the least analytical person she had ever met” lmao. My fave thing she’s ever posted on IG was “the ocean is the safest place in the world.” You sure about that?? 🤔More like the complete opposite lol

I do agree with taking a leap of faith especially if you are in a toxic job or you are unhappy, but please don't do too much at once. Make a plan, don't rely too much on social media and be responsible.

Hi there! 5 years ago I gave up a university degree and moved to an island. I didn't become an influencer tho, haha. It can be life changing, it can be uplifting, it can bring joy into your life. It was the best decision that I've ever made and I'm thankful everyday to see palm trees, 350day of sunshine, and kind locals around me. I used to be a very anxious person, couldn't keep up with a city life and felt alienated in my own country where most of the people mentality is 'go go go'. Here life is a lot slower and relaxed. It has it's up and downs, but you could not convince me to give up this pure way of existing for anything. Of course I have a job and I don't eat avocados everyday but my whole perspective on life has changed and made me more balanced. I could talk a lot.... if you have any question pls do ask me 😊

I wish more people who followed these "influencers" would watch videos like these. As much as I love the visual aspect of Claire's Instagram (I'm a photographer, I can't help it lol) I'm also rooted in reality so the whole drop everything and move to Hawaii thing is something I naturally brushed off as unrealistic. It's also concerning the way that some of her followers appear to idolize her and defend her every move. In her latest video, she even admitted that she was not thinking clearly when she made "You" and yet, some people were in the comments still defending the behavior in that video as if they can see no wrong in her which is so disturbing. I wish that she along with other influencers would make it very clear that hitchhiking anywhere can be dangerous along with moving in with someone shortly after you meet them. In terms of safety, I don't care how "in love" she was, that could've gone SO wrong for her and she doesn't acknowledge the risk in the behaviors that seem to be glamourized in her videos. I'm mainly talking about her because I don't really follow a lot of creators like her. Thank you for making videos like this, the young and impressionable ones need to be watching your videos and taking notes.

I’m a geography student in Scotland and you’ve hit the nail on the head with the concerns of gentrification and migration to places like Hawaii. I can’t speak at all for Hawaiians as I am literally half way across the world but you’re right by identifying the problematic principles behind it all. Loved the video ❤️

@ lilykoi hawaii is one of the better influencers as she is genuinely interested in the native culture and land protection, getting involved with local protests etc. but generally the way that island and it's people are being exploited by superficial people is tragic.

Not to mention the negative affect that people moving to Hawaii in droves has on native hawaiians. They've been essentially pushed out of their own land, and many are homeless / can't afford food because of prices of produce / housing increasing due to rich foreigners moving there. The land and people need time to heal and that can't happen if rich influences keep coming over and jacking up all the prices / taking up all the space

I am part Native Hawaiian and I was born and raised on the Big Island. Most of what you said in this video was legit including but not limited to the following: 1) Most people that live in Hawaii have jobs, school, or some other obligations - they do not go to the beach every day 2) Living here is expensive, especially food 3) The Mainland transplants coming here are driving up the cost of living, which is displacing locals 4) There are beautiful places in Hawaii but not everywhere is glamorous or Instagram worthy (e.g. Waianae on Oahu) 5) Hawaii is loaded with poverty and homelessness, many of them are Pacific Islanders 6) Some parts of Hawaii are very wet (e.g. Hilo on the Big Island) and others are very dry (Kona on the Big Island) 7) Some people here hitchhike but I don't recommend it for safety reasons 8) Most real locals do not live like the influencers

A lot of people needed this video a looong time ago 😩 I totally support influencers that wanna live in hawaii but it it INFLUENCES other people to move there too, driving the natives out. Claire Michelle even told her followers once to not move to hawaii just because she did, which I’m really happy she did say that...
@nessaelessar3 жыл бұрын
Two things that Claire has reportedly made money off are her presets for Lightroom and her photo course (which another KZbinr famously called out for being very ... basic and a little weird). She used to sell prints of her painting and she does have sponsors on her Instagram stories from time to time (unfortunately she doesn't put the right disclaimers in there so they sometimes look like no-ad postings, from what I've seen). Edit: should've watched on before posting this ...

the biggest issue is also realizing that this lifestyle makes it seem so attainable for the disabled (myself included) when it's not even close. in high school (before my major health issues) i thought i wanted this because they seemed so relaxed and carefree... they make it look so easy to make money and do yoga all day

Do have to say, one of the girls you showed in the beginning was Lilikoi. She was born on one of the islands and lived there with her family and recently moved to LA for more modeling and opportunities. I was waiting for someone to make a video about what Claire is up to now. I agree that it is not ok to charge people for nutritional information that you are not qualified to give, it's like when influencers charge for workout plans when they aren't qualified trainers. I went to school in Oahu for a little bit (I also traveled there every year with my family growing up), after living there and growing up seeing family friends from there...I'd never want to move there again because of the displacement of natives, it is pretty devastating.

Yes 🙌 I was waiting for this! Also, I’m totally reminded of this Instagram influencer Natalie Schlater who got some heat for posting a picture of herself in front of a rice field (where people were picking rice) in Indonesia, ass cheeks fully exposed, and the original caption was: “thinking about how different my life is from the man picking in the rice field every morning.” If you like Cody and Noel’s podcast, they talk about it in an episode. “Cake out for rice farmers”, about 35 min in.

It’s sad that people act like work is a bad thing..? Yeah, work can be boring & mundane, but it’s necessary, and makes me appreciate the tiny magic moments when I do experience them. When I was a teenager I worked at a steakhouse- I was a hostess and cut ham at the food bar on weekends (no really, I stood there for 8 hours slicing ham for people. it wasn’t that bad but still, people can be over zealous for ham 😂) I worked odd jobs throughout college, and a few years in retail. All “boring jobs”, but I put food on my table, paid my bills, & found magic in simply being healthy & alive. There’s always a balance 😌

People from developed country are moving to Bali (Indonesia) to "start a new life" and the price of goods and rent around here has been slowly getting more and more expensive because home-owners charge more knowing those tourists would pay more whilst local's income isn't growing fast enough to catch up with the inflation 😔 gentrification is hurting people yet somehow it's justified with "so we aren't allowed to move to another place", while the problem is actually bigger than that
