This is a great question! I'd strongly encourage you to watch Dr. K's video called "Psychiatrist's Guide to Conversation" It's a bit long, but that video inherently changed how I talk to people both in and out of the vegan discussion. He encourages a concept called "reflective listening" where you repeat things back to the other person, which both puts you in their shoes and gives them reassurance that they're being heard. What I see happening a lot between vegans and non vegans in conversations is you have two people that are angry at each other and are just spouting facts at each other, and once that happens, communication isn't happening anymore because nobody is listening to each other. You see it all the time in discussions about abortion, religion, climate change, etc. Steering a conversation and getting someone to listen to you (especially when they disagree!) is HARD, but it's absolutely possible.
@_Booker_DeWitt3 жыл бұрын
Same way I stay calm when anyone has any kind of illogical, religious, mythological or otherwise unscientific view I disagree with. Answer their questions if they ask, try to teach the actual proven facts. Beyond that, all you can do is allow them to figure it out on their own (or not). You'll start to realize people have their own minds that you cannot always effectively communicate with, no matter what you say or prove to them. There is nothing you can do beyond informing. And because there is nothing you can do beyond that point, there is no point to getting worked up or emotional over it, don't allow it to have that kind of hold on you. Just find solace in the fact that you know the facts and aren't a slave to the ignorance that plagues many others.
@HunterBelkiran3 жыл бұрын
I would say that just speak your truth, and don't try to argue with them per say. Sometimes when we give people the space to think about their own opinions and beliefs, without judging or condemning them, it's easier for them to change or see another point of view.

@VeganDrew don’t get all your sources material from vegan literature. I made that mistake for 3 years and it nearly cost my life. My body, and the bodies of many others literally cannot efficiently absorb plant nutrients. Some people do great with it for a long time, but many suffer through it no matter how much money we spend supplementing. At the end of the day, we can’t expect an entire world who 95% will not give up meat. This is mainly a first world idea because many of us have the privilege to afford this lifestyle. Please don’t generalize all people who eat meat. Many do it to stay healthy. I don’t agree with anything factory farmed because the torture is horrendous. And it produces unhealthy meats in the process. I do everything I can to stay away from that and get most of my animal products from local farms when finances permit. I know it’s hard to imagine that veganism isn’t the entire answer. I used to be in that boat because I chose to study all sides. Veganism, in many cases, is just as detrimental to or our earth, the animals, and her people. I didn’t want to believe it for a long time, but it took going from 160 pounds to 119 in 3 years for me to realize that I might not be doing things right. I noticed that there are some people on here that tried to say that being a vegan is a cult but it's not. Veganism is a movement that speaks up for the animals who cannot speak up for themselves. If anything going vegan shows you have compassion empathy and humanity. For people who know what happens to these animals and don't care that says a lot about someone's character. We were given a moral compass for a reason so we know the difference between right and wrong and when something is an injustice you have to speak up about it even if it means you'll be ridiculed. For anyone to attack a vegan says that they obviously feel guilty and are taking it out on that person because they don't want to stop their addiction.

How could I build a stable, happy and safe life in a world of cruauty full of non sense and that is collapsing. A few days ago I read a post that was saying: 5 reasons to go vegan 1. Animals feel fear and pain 2. Meat is worse for global warming than cars 3. If it's wrong to eat a dog, it's wrong to eat a chicken 4. Eating meat increases your risk of heart disease by 50% 5. The grain used for livestock could feed the world's hunger "Reason 1 should be enough" - that was written by someone in the comment section.. Which made me sad, actually. And this is not the first time I see such a statement. I don't know why but some vegans care only about animals and not about their bodies, the environment, the forests, the Earth as a whole.. Of course, reason 1 is super important.. But so are the other four reasons. So.. I just wanted to say: Thank you, Ed! Thank you for speaking up for the environment and for our beautiful planet. I think an issue that needs to be discussed way more is the fact that a very large number of people BELIEVE that veganism is genetically not for everyone. And this happens because of how prevalent gut issues are! Most people when they try a vegan diet will trigger their underlying gut issues that they probably didn't even notice until then, and then they will spread the misinformation that "oh, i tried going vegan, it's not for me...MY BOY IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH IT" or something like that. Plants need fertilizer, much larger water inputs and require airable land. Mushrooms require ultra clean substrates and have a smaller range of humidity and temperature tolerances. @@rasputozen I don’t think he made any claims about it being “less work”. He said that it is “less costly” on the earth, in other words, “more eco-friendly”. And he does have a good point, soy farming causes a good deal of environmental destruction, which directly contributes to the death of animals, and contributes to an increase of greenhouse gases. Being vegan is not going to save the earth. Do I think that being vegan is the morally correct decision? Yes. Do I also think that producing insect protein is an even higher moral ground? Yes. But neither of these is going to “save the earth”. Individual consumer choices are not a form of activism, and are not going to be the thing that saves the earth. Asking people to, “wake up” is idealist theory, and not rooted in the material conditions of our society. It is not reality that is shaped by our minds, but our minds that are shaped by reality. Our economy lays the foundation for our consciousness, as the economy is the base that informs our super structures (religion, culture, government, etc.). As long as our economy is profit focused, and continues to promote individualism, then our earth is going to continue to die. Capitalism by its very nature leads to constant over production due to the laws of supply and demand. As long as we are over producing, meaning making more than we need, causing huge amounts of waste, then we’re fucked. We would need to dramatically revolutionize our economic system, and quickly, into a system based on people’s needs, rather than profit in order to have any hope of saving the earth.
