VEGETA IS NICER THAN GOKU?! | A Dragonball Discussion

Goku and Vegeta are vastly different from the average Saiyan warrior; however it's Goku that is considered to be the real good guy in Dragon Ball. However, I believe that Vegeta deserves the title more as he is the character who has undergone the most change and has turned out kinder of heart than the main character. Do you agree? The way I've always seen it, Goku is a bit of a deadbeat dad, or at least he would be if he wasn't as powerful as he was. Goku has tried (and failed) to apply himself in the real world, so fighting is all he really has going for him. It just so happens that the one thing he's good at, he's exceptional at it. Gohan and Goten have proven themselves to be strong enough to handle serious threats (or at least until the plot decides to have Goku and Vegeta do everything), so I don't think Goku has to worry about his kids very much. Chi-Chi on the other hand, yeah, Goku sucks as a husband.

Let'see what Vegeta did in Super : -Goes on vacation with his family and tries his hardest to endure every humilation, all for make his family happy. -Is shown to have a better relationship with Future Trunks NOW, than during the Z (and even during that training, he was violent only in order to pull Trunks out of his b.s.o.d.) -He cares more for his pregnant Bulma, than for a tournament. -HE said NICE THINGS about the freakin Frieza, to kid Trunks in order to not scary him in case he would've see him during the creation of the team in the last arc. Vegeta surely had the character development a main should undergo.

I really would like to know if Future Trunks actually keeps on training in his new timeline or if he's going to be content to just settle down with Mai. I mean, hypothetically, since Whis said he's going to go there to make sure Beerus handles the Zamasu of that timeline they could establish a connection between Future Trunks and the Beerus&Whis of that timeline and have him train there. On that thought, I hope Whis not only makes sure that Zamasu gets taken care of but also that Beerus doesn't end up causing trouble on earth. The thing I loved the most about the Zamasu arc was that Vegeta mourned the death of a version of Bulma HE HAD NEVER EVEN MET. To him, Bulma is Bulma. Granted, this one raised Future Trunks, an iteration of his son that he had bonded with intensely and was the impetus behind Vegeta further embracing the family he had built in his time on Earth. He is not the heartless man many presume him to be. He is a stone-cold killer and bringer of death come family man. I think that what is special about Vegeta's development is that it gives people hope that they themselves can become a better person and find happiness even when they've lived a life in bondage or defined tragedy and make something worth protecting out of it all.

It's funny when you look at how Goku treats Gohan (largely dismissive after the Cell games) and how Vegeta treats him (with the respect he would show an equal), Vegeta is nicer to Gohan than Goku is. Where Picollo serves as his father, Vegeta is basically his grumpy uncle, Krillin is his best friend, and Goku is kinda' just "a guy he knows".

I don't think you know what the word dismissive means. Goku cared very much for Gohan's development as a fighter but not as much as a man (he does not have much knowledge of education except for martial arts or training related things). He respects strength and skill above all else because he's sort of a fight/training junkie so only in Super has he shown disinterest in Gohan because, lets be honest, he let himself go (training/fitness wise) so he's not as interesting to Goku anymore. Gohan has always been not only strong but also incredibly bright and he quickly realized, at a very young age, that his father was a very strange man and he accepted him the way he was. He was not traumatized in the least. He viewed him as a hero and someone to look up to (in some respects), hence why he never bears him any ill will. He even hugs him before leaving to fight Super Buu and specifically asks Kibito for Goku's Gi. Why? Because he wanted to represent what his father embodied to him. A hero that protects his friends and family. That's how Gohan sees Goku. The Great Saiyaman is just another way to externalize his desire to be a hero that helps people. I repeat, he is NOT TRAUMATIZED. It is a conscious choice that he made. Gohan understands that there is a need for strength and so he does not hold a grudge that his father pursues his passion of surpassing his limits because he sees there's a use to it.

Goku tried to train Gohan because he saw Gohan has a large amount of power and knew if he died Gohan could be there. You see this when Goku teleports Cell to King Kai's planet, he knows Gohan will protect Earth for him. Also during the Buu arc, Gohan is powerful enough to defeat Buu and Goku trusts Gohan with killing Buu.

Goku HAS gotten stupider and less moral in Super (and it's not just a "dubbing" issue). Here is a *SPOILER* as of February 12th, 2017 which definitively proves it. (See below.) . . . . . . . When told that Zen Oh Sama will destroy all 11 universes that do not win the tournament, Goku doesn't even care. When Beerus is angry at him for making that situation occur, he says something like, "So, do you think I should try to ask Zen-chan to not destroy all of the other universes?" When told that that won't work, he's like, "OK! Well leave it to me! I'll win!"...as if Universe 7 winning does not lead to the complete destruction of all other 11 universes and the trillions and trillions of lives that are inhabiting them. He's like, "I'll win this, so our universe isn't destroyed!" not even thinking that what he started is leading to the biggest genocide in history.

Compare how Goku reacted to finding out Black killed Chi-Chi and Goten to how Vegeta reacted when Beerus hit Bulma. Not even killed. HIT. I swear Goku was angrier when Frieza killed Krillin. Vegeta straight up surpassed Goku just from seeing Bulma get hit. That whole angry Goku moment was just really underwhelming to me. I was expecting a relentless beatdown like what Vegeta did to Black. But instead, Goku just got a slight upper hand for a few minutes and paused after like each attack, then everything was back to normal. Vegeta isn't just the nicer, but more emotional of the two.

It's the reason Goku didn't go SSJ the first time Krillin died, besides it not being a plot point yet, because he only witnessed the proof of it his response is lessened. But let's face it the only reason that the "I killed you're wife and kid" wasn't what took Goku over the edge was because from the very start Trunks was going to be the one to defeat merged Zamasu.

I do agree with Dan Smith, if Goku were the main character of the arc, instead of Trunks, he would have gotten the power up, because it would have been conducive to the plot. He DID get a rage power up momentarily, but Super just wanted to drive home how OP Goku Black and Zamasu were together. Not really the best assessment of Goku's seeming lack of love for his family.

You have to consider the difference in thought that comes from being in an entirely alternate timeline. I mean, yes, technically, Black killed two people named Goten and Chi-Chi that happen to be approximately identical to the ones Goku loves... But they aren't the ones Goku knows. Beerus hit (what Vegeta would consider) the "real" Bulma. Black killed the wife and son of some other guy who happened to be identical to Goku. Goku knows that if he gets back in the time machine and goes home, his wife and kid are totally fine. He never even met the people who Black killed. There's not much comparison.

I think they're two sides of a coin of bad behaviors (everyone with his own kind) and of a coin of good behaviors (same). I see in them an agressive and sadistic character with consideration for what's around him, who can and will adapt (Vegeta) , and a good spirited, loyal, easy going, sparkly character who lack in empathy (he have it in him, but not so much and that's not his fault) and it's so true to himself he's clueless of common human behaviors (Goku). But if we put aside our personal opinions, there's a fact: Vegeta appreciate Goku as a companion and opponent, and Goku genuinely likes Vegeta...if Goku can, you also can :)

To be fair, I don't really feel too sorry for Chi-Chi. Goku didn't even really love Chi-Chi in the first place, let alone knew the concept of marriage. Well.... Goku only married Chi Chi because he made a promise and didn't want to break a promise, even though he didn't originally understand at the time he first made that promise. He didn't fall in love with her at the tournament or anything, he just kept a promise. I'm not sure he understands the concept of love, he just likes her a lot and knows to hide whenever he pisses her off. It's also hard to tell because we barely see them coexist except when it's her yelling at Goku for him wanting to rush off to train or fight the next big bad guy. It would be interesting to see Goku and Chichi just hang out on their downtime... but Goku just isn't a downtime kinda guy... he'd still be doing push ups or something. I know TFS jokes a lot... but Chichi kinda is 'that woman that lives in his house'.

Technically Goku has never changed. In the dub, Goku's dialogue was changed to emulate Superman's personality more to appeal more to western audiences. Apparently it worked considering people's perspectives on the character. Super (and Kai) made the dialogue fit better with the Japanese version of Goku, which is what we see now. This is very apparent in the Buu Saga because the decisions are just so dumb on Goku's part, they clearly had a hard time fitting his "nicer" personality into the story for the dub. That all said, it's not like Goku is a bad guy, and really DB needs a guy like him for the plot to even progress. It would be easy to complain about all the increased power levels, but we're encouraged by Goku to embrace it and surpass the next opponent.

But either they miraculously worked out (like sparing Vegeta, a dude as evil as Frieza at the time), or he simply wasn't called out on it, which is mostly seen in the Buu Saga. The only difference between the Goku that puts the fate of the world in the hands of two kids, and the Goku who trusts Zeno to not erase everything because of their friendship, is that the latter gets called out on the risk he's taking. But if you're trying to tell me Goku doesn't act for the sake of his friends, then I'll say you didn't watch Super. Don't try to pull that card, it won't work.

As a Goku fan...shouldn't you be able to explain how he HAS developed? You don't ask someone to disprove a negative. Vegeta is relatable because he experiences failure and frustration like anyone. Goku rarely experiences that and when he does, he doesn't deal with it like a normal person. He shrugs everything off. That's not very relatable. You also see how Vegeta's relationships have developed with those around him, how he has gone from hating everyone and everything to gaining some perspective and learning to love people, at least privately. Goku is a static character whose relationships have remained the same since day 1. Even Gohan and Trunks are much more developed characters than Goku ever will be. At least if nothing changes in the current formula.

This all about Goku would make sense if it wasn't for that one scene in original DB when Goku sees grandpa, back from the dead, and burst into tears. I remember when I first watched DB I was 12, and that scene came up not very long after my own grandfather had passed away, whom I loved very much. I almost burst into tears my self alongside Goku when that scene came up. Even to this day I'm holding a tear to that scene. The point of the story: Goku is neither dumb nor selfish. My theory is that he's just socially awkward, maybe even autistic/Asperger syndrome(d?) and that is making it difficult for him to express himself in the "right way". Just like when you were talking about his intelligence (very well done/explained video), the same could be said here: it's in the way of expressing oneself. Although, over time, as more and more episodes progressed, Toriyama did make him sillier, goofier and more selfish than he originally was. It's like he totally gave up on his character development, but ironically, not character himself. With Super especially- it's starting to look like Goku isn't even there, just his cardboard cut out.

Well, if you really try to see when Goku really showed some "special" attention to his sons, and not to his friends, it is all in the movies. In the Garlick Junior movie, he goes against Garlick Jr without a second thought to save Gohan - he doesn't bring the Z-team together - and he ruthlessly kills Garlick's minions because, hell, don't touch my son. In the Tullece movie, he clearly says that he cares more about Gohan than about Earth ("Dad, save the Earth", which he answers with "I don't know for Earth, but I will definitely save you."). In the Cooler movie, he sacrifices himself to save Gohan, making him powerless for a huge part of the movie. In the Bojack movie, he breaks the laws of existence, as you say it, because hell, don't touch my son. In the second Broly movie, he answers Goten's call for help and joins Gohan and Goten to defeat Broly, for good this time. In all these, Goku appears as a father, following our vision of such a term... But those were movies. In the story written by Akira Toriyama, Goku does not treat Gohan, Chichi and Goten differently than he treats his companions. He literally abandons Gohan to Cell, and has to be scolded by Piccolo for several minutes before changing his mind - too late, as we all know. He leaves his family to go and train. What Masako is saying here is not that he isn't showing love or caring for his family, it's that he treats his family like his companions. He does not show specific love to his wife and his sons, like Vegeta does (see how Vegeta's mind literally crumbles when Future Trunks is wounded by Cell, or when Bulma is hit by Beerus ; he is nowhere as close to anyone as he is to his family), and like a human father would. I think Goku/Vegeta is not a very speaking comparison, because Vegeta is not as close to the Z-team as Goku is. Let's take Krillin for example. He instantly falls in love with 18. He is ready to risk everything for her -he destroys the remote- and, when Cell absorbs her, even though he knows he has no chance, he attacks Perfect Cell. In the Abo and Cado movie, he protects 18 and Maron from the debris, even though he knows perfectly well that 18 is stronger than him, and can handle herself easily. Since Goku knows Gohan can handle himself, he does not try to protect him anymore (he lets him go and fight Buu on his own. The fact that someone must succeed him in Earth's protection is more important to him than protecting his son, his child, of every potential danger). Here is the difference. The only moments when Goku acts as a father... Are not canon, and not written by Toriyama.

Movies are traditionally non canon content which they felt were good ideas for the fluff between series as DBZ fans are very demanding and need their fix. Regardless of anything from a non canon perspective. Goku cares alot about his family and friends. THat's not up for debate. But Vegeta who has never once succumbed to amnesia, had no earthly ties like Goku, gave no general concern to anyone other than his own ambitions now dances and as a King of a Race BOWS HIS HEAD IN RESPECT TO BEERUS SO THAT THE WORLD WONT BE DESTROYED where as Goku would simply shrug off such a being or not hold his tongue "Mind you because he isn't smart and doesn't know when he is stepping on toes or crossing a line." Moral of the story is, Vegeta has taken the role of Guardian, Family Man, Alpha Male. And that Growth is allowed because Goku fans are unwilling to allow him to be anything else than the air headed brute beast that he is known for. Not saying he isnt lovable in his density, but it's no longer an ideal setting and its just like any Genre of Music. Or sport. No one team stays the top for long. Two ships passing in the night don't have to open fire at one another. Just accept that these are the truths and that this is another chapter. Thank the original poster for opening the eyes of most for the changing times. No salt required.

In the Saiyan Saga Vegeta was responsible for killing all of Goku's friends, yet he still wanted to let him get away in the pod just because he wanted to fight him again. It didn't really affect him that deeply. I'm surprised Krillin being killed by Frieza got him upset enough to turn super saiyan. You know what though? I think he may have only got upset just because of the frustration that Frieza still wasn't dead. Not because Krillin died.

Treg In the original (non-90s American) versions, Goku doesn't start losing it until Frieza looks at Gohan and says "Maybe the brat should go next." It's a pretty clear indication that Krillin dying "for the final time" and Gohan maybe being next is what pushed Goku into becoming a literal rage monster.

No. I don't think so. In the original Japanese scene, Krillin says this isn't the kind of guy that can change like Piccolo has and Goku agrees. And Goku just sees Vegeta and thinks "what a waste" That he could get much more powerful and he could fight him again. What you said about him wanting to change him may be true in the English dub though. The original Japanese character will always be the true Goku to me. Not what the dub changed just because they wanted Goku to be more of a goody-good for English audiences.

I wouldn't say it didn't affect him deeply, he was legit pissed when he arrived to find them dead and laid into Nappa. However before he started fighting Vegeta he was asked by Krillin to move the fight away from the dead and to trust him that they could be brought back, this gave him hope they could return which would have placated some of his rage. On Namek against Frieza was different, the Earth Dragon Balls were unable to revive Krillin and with the loss of the Namekian set and Piccolo heading towards death's door yet again against a far stronger opponent he would have saw no hope in Krillin coming back. Also having already died himself and experiencing the after life would fundamentally change his views on death as does having access to magical wish granting balls that can undo death.

In the Saiyan Saga Piccolo was still alive which meant the dragon ball could be could, so there was no point in dying if you come back again, but in the Freezer Saga Piccolo was shot, thought to be dead, and the other Namekians were also dead.

Madhumita Mandal Goku didnt know jackshit about Planet Vegeta and his Saiyan heritage during his childhood, and he had Grandpa Gohan take care of him. Vegeta was raised on planet Vegeta, had to live under Frieza's rule, got his planet destroyed, Frieza murdered his father, and even after all that he still had to kneel before Frieza and do his bidding. Vegeta definitely had one hell of a past compared to Goku. But as you said before, 'you will not understand that'.

goku's a good guy, and I think usually the more dedicated to getting stronger person is, the more goku likes you. That's most likely how so many enemies became his allies. Tien, Piccolo, Yamcha, and even vegeta were interested in being the strongest around, and they all became buddies of goku. He was very father like to gohan when he was training him in the cell saga. The less gohan trained, the more distant goku was to him. Same with yamcha and even krillin. They all stopped training, thus they'd see goku less and less. Goku never cared if you're as strong as him, just if you're as dedicated, and not evil. That's just how I see him though.

Goku saw in Gohan the potentialto surpass him and like many good and well meaning parents, he pushed his own logic onto his son. Happens all the time by the best of parents. Now unless we're going to say Chi Chi is a horrible mom for trying to focus more on Gohan's intelect because she saw he was smart, letting Goten do whatever cause he's basicall Goku Jr., and that Bulma is the best mom because she just buys Trunks whatever, I think we need to step back and contextualize a thing or to behind Goku's actions and behavior.

I don't think so. He was confident in his son's ability to defeat Cell. Remember in the Room of Spirit and Time, Gohan asked Goku to hit him with everything he had, and Goku reluctantly did so since it was the only way to get Gohan to transform. He was simply replicating that with Cell and he had confidence that Gohan would reach SSj2 like he did during training. He knew that him and the rest of the fighters stood no chance. Like Piccolo, he had concerns that maybe he went a little too far, so he asked Krillin for a senzu bean so that he'd jump in to help. All he wanted was for Gohan to be the best he can be, I'd say very father-like.

He may look human, but Goku IS an alien, he thinks differently, feels differently, his natural instincts are all skewed... Maybe it's a good thing considering that Goku being the main protagonist and Savior of the PEOPLE of earth, cares for every living being equally(more or less) which in turn makes him an ideal hero who's personal life doesn't overshadowes his decision. With the upcoming universe survival arc I start seeing a trend in DBS. Every hardship earth and the characters we love had to endure is down to Goku. If it wasn't for Goku, Beerus would never have searched for the SSG (weakest of all examples). The whole Ressurection of F Arc is down to Freeza wanting revenge on Goku. The Champa Arc was a breather, because the Earth and our heroes weren't in danger. They would have simply changed Universes. But Goku risk the swapping of Universes by delaying the fight with Hit, because he wanted Hit to fight with no Limits. Zamasu was triggered by Goku again and again. That let to the Destruction of Future Trunks Future Universe 7. Goku set himself as target for Hit. And he is going to ask Zeno for starting the Tournament, which results in the destruction of every Universe but one. My Point is Goku caused every harm thrown towards earth and his friends. He seems, although a good guy at heart to be an cause of Harm and Hardship and maybe considered an antagonising Force in Super. Vegeta or someone has to stop him before its to late.
