Ice cold Newz Dude, that was an idea the Author came up with later on. At that point, both were equal. This happens a lot of times in manga. 20~50 chapters later they say he was hiddin somethin. Like for example, in Super, the whole Biils shit. He told Frieza to destroy the saiyans...No he didn't, this was an idea that Akira came up with a couple of years ago, but now you have to say that is true despite when Akira was writing his own manga that wasn't the real reason. See what I mean? You can always change what is the truth in the manga adding info, or another characters, other explanations, etc

I'm the writer, I NEED to come up with something new and interesting every week to keep my manga going on JUMP. 10~15chapters after that (2 and 1/2months to 4months later) Goku will fight Majin Boo, and I wanted to bring something new to the saga, a new transformation! SSJ3! Chapter 18, Vegeta finds out that Goku was holding himself back The point is, Akira may or may not had come up with the SSJ3 idea during the time he was drawing Majin Vegeta vs Goku. The point I'm trying to make is that sometimes the author add something new later on that he didn't even thought about it, but he can do it if he explains why. For example, he came up with the SSJ3 idea and the explanation was because he couldn't go SSJ3 vs Vegeta because it would short his life span of 24hours. We buy it, we as readers have no choice. But doesn't mean at the time he was drawing Majin Vegeta Vs Goku, the SSJ3 idea existed. Got it? You add something new later on and need to fill the hole with some explanation. Mangakas do this all the time. I read a few JUMP mangas every week and this happens a lot!

Damn, the circumstances behind Vegeta's resentment and hatred towards Goku are completely otherwordly, but I think most of us can somewhat relate to Vegeta. There is always someone that is naturally better than you at just about everything, and no matter the amount of work and dedication you put in, you will never be able to reach them. They may just have the one thing you desire more than anything and they don't appreciate it, and that just makes you all the more resentful and it can start to erode you from the inside out. I never really understood Vegeta's pain until I got older and tasted something very similar to it myself.

***** No, you clearly didn't understand. The fight with Frieza was a chance to show how disastrous the consequences can be if Goku and Vegeta didn't rectify their bad habits. Goku has a habit of being too relaxed and lowering his guard, and he was taught a lesson when he was severely injured by a puny attack like a ray gun. Vegata has a habit of overthinking situations, in his case, he took too long in finishing Frieza off and decided to drink in the victory which allowed Frieza to use his back up plan - destroy the earth. In short, if Goku doesn't work on correcting that bad habit, he can be defeated by opponents much weaker than him, and even be killed by them. Same goes for Vegeta, if he still continues overthinking situations, he'll leave himself open to counter-attacks, and the severity of the counter-attacks will vary from mild to extreme.

as a kid i admired goku because of his stoutness and wanting to do the right thing. and that's still admirable, i'm not going to take that away from him. but at a young age, i guess i had a hard time understanding why veggie hated goku. i only got the part that goku was better than him, from what i could understand at the time, but rewatching the series has showing there's so much more depth to hating him than "he's better than me". Even if i don't necessarily agree with it, I can sympathize with his motives, I get where he's coming from. And having moments like this where i come to a new level of understanding a person and their actions more, makes me appreciate this show more than I ever did as a kid. Yes there is a shit ton of fighting in this show, but there's an underlining purpose to all of it.

SuperAlphamale13 Great post! Felt the same way as a kid and was so confused at Vegeta’s jealousy as being petty but as I grew older and this arc popped up the writing was on the wall. What hit me was when he was insulted by the Supreme Kai also when he called his squabble meaningless....his response of “spend most of your life ruled by another, watch your race dwindle to a handful and tell me what’s more meaningful than ones strength!” That just hit me that Vegeta has been abused physically and emotionally for so long that everything else outside being strong couldn’t mean shit to him! DBZ is basic but its execution deserve full marks!

It's a good speech and all but it wasn't anything we haven't heard before. We've known he resented Goku for a long time being stronger than him and it was his main motivation to be stronger. It wasn't until Vegeta finally admitted to himself and accepted that Goku is better that he truly developed in my eyes.

I can't help but feel for Vegeta . He had never known what it was like to be "defeated ". Having to soak that in ? Must have been unimaginably painful for a guy like Vegeta . Then , for Kakarot, the one that defeated Vegeta , to go on and be the one to Defeat Frieza , (The guy Vegeta had dreamed of one day destroying ), was like adding salt to his wounds . And THEN, realizing he was no match for Cell , and the one to defeat him was ..a mere child ? He was then surpassed by an 11 Year old Boy !? Vegeta already had one foot in the grave , and I believe his Majin Phase was him attempting to get that one foot out of the grave and reclaim his throne as the prince of all Saiyans . But even then, later we find out Goku could have gone SSJ3 During this fight but held back ? Toriyama has toyed with and destroyed Vegeta throughout every fucking Saga . What an asshole !

Lonely FatGuy actually, in the anime, Goku mentioned he learned to go SSJ3 before he came back to Earth. Why do you think when Vegeta returned after his sacrifice that he took the news of SSJ3 hard? Goku was holding back in this fight and that realization broke Vegeta as he fully realized he would never defeat Goku, because they will never truly fight on an even playing field.

But that newbie with 'no training' was Vegeta for the first time. Vegeta was born with incredible power and live in a planet that has 10x gravity that also boost him for easier exp. Goku was low level and trained hard for whole life. Vegeta starts hard training only because Goku finally got better than him. Yes Goku has luck to find good teachers for fast hard training but Vegeta has the extremely advantage for the first place.

Vegeta was a mercenary not a warrior, big difference. He didn’t even speak of ideals like honor and class until he met Goku. He was a raging maniac ready to destroy the earth due to Goku not going for the idea of him destroying his whole family as a fair exchange to be his “partner” (like the partner he just threw in the sky and disintegrated, Nappa) What an honorable guy he was lol.....Now, what I will say is I respect him for controlling his ego maniac sized temper over the years and creating a family of his own to see more that matters than his own foolishness. THAT is what I respect about Vegeta, in that aspect he came a long way..but to me when he let babidi possess him it made me angry with him once again. If Goku wasn’t there to take the full brunt of Vegeta rage (whether as training partners, rivals, etc) half the universe would be destroyed. Goku doesn’t get the credit he deserves for TANKING Vegeta, Frieza, Buus very lifeforce for all these years. Vegeta literally settles down and started a family, frieza can’t TOUCH either without being sent back to hell, and buu was forced to reincarnate into benevolence LOL.
