Wow😍. Veggie garden in the forest. You don't have to go to the grocery stores to buy veggies. They are just in your backyard. How fulfilling it feels to harvest the fruits of your labor. You have the lake where you can fish. You can hunt for wild fowls and animals for your meat. Tranquility, self- reliance, fresh air, fresh water, farming and carpentry as physical exercise, lake where you can swim...Oh my gosh! So admirable.

When you said that there's always work in the garden, I was reminded of something my grandmother told me --"You have to water a garden with your sweat." That, too, has been my experience. All the best. Thanks!

Your hard work has produce a fine garden with beautiful crops Shawn! I do much enjoy your sharing it all! Indeed, hot and humid here in Pa. as well. It's like a all day sweat lodge! Fortunately my house and shop are cool. I have dehumidifiers going else the mold happens. And in the trees in my woods keeps things cool. As said before, I love seeing Cali in her new pool and the lake as well. She is so much like my yellow lab Molly years back, personalities almost identical. Has been quite hot here in Eastern Canada too. Our average temperature is usually somewhere around 22 celcius but this year has been closer to 28 average. There's a little seasonal spring in my backyard which usually stays full of water for most of the summer. But this summer it dried up early and never came back. I have a pair of Mallard that use to make their way from that pond, through the woods to feed on seeds fallen from my bird feeder. Over the past couple years I have been able to start feeding them out of my hand. And sometimes I would wake up and they would see me getting ready through the windows and make their way down to the back door for a little extra treat. They still stop by every so often, only the female once this month. But since they don't have the little pond to cool off in, they come for food and then take off. I set up a gravity fed bird bath, basically a bucket with a small pin hole at the bottom. The rest of the birds have been loving it. Strongly suggest! Especially with this hot hot weather. Cheers.

You always make me feel better. I was having such a good day right up until I went out to get in the pool. Then I lost my balance on the top step and grabbed for the rail which everyone has been telling me to get fixed. Then hit my low back on the edge of the wood and my head on the ground........yes I cried like a 3 year old. I could see my foot bleeding, I could feel my neck was wet with blood. Luckily I practice getting up from the floor just in case I do something stupid. So with blood and tears flowing I got to my knees and managed to get back into the house. I had been watching you in the house while I was getting ready to go to the pool and after putting Ice on my very painful back and dish towels on everything that was bleeding I blew my nose and turned you back on and watched you in the garden. It made me feel better knowing that this wouldn’t have even slowed you down.💖

The first 9 years of my life we lived in Farming country. We had fresh milk, cheese, butter and cream; fat fresh tomato's, corn out of the field, beans and cabbages, fish from the rivers. I did not realize how wonderful that all tasted until we moved and food just never tasted quite the same again. Even as a child I knew the difference.

Life should be a journey, not a destination. I think that's part of the appeal of self reliance and living life off grid. It's living on your own terms, and realizing that we are part of nature, we're not separate from it. You get out what you put in. And with solar panels it's even easier and more convenient to be less dependent on the system. I can't think of a more rewarding way to live.

Shawn, Such a great channel (including your other channel as well), I'd say one of the best out there. I have 3 little ones (11, 9, and 6 yrs old) so it's a little more difficult for me to take the leap of homesteading like you did, BUT every day I think about it. I hope to one day do it, but until then your channels help feed that homesteading feeling I get. Made it up to our family camp in the mountains of northwestern Pennsylvania this weekend, very secluded like you. Kids and I went fishing, catching toads, frogs, newts, crayfish, hiking/exploring the woods. It truly doesn't get any better. Keep the great videos coming, I'll be sure to keep tuning in.

Not hot enough for you there! Come visit me here in Arizona is 5100 feet above sea level the last few days have been 100 degrees at the peak and nights are getting down to maybe a low of 60. Humidity gets up to around 40 or 50% at the High usually around 25 to 30%. I'm not built for this heat either coming from New Hampshire and Maine for most of my life so I know exactly how you feel when that Sun starts climbing above the trees. I really like watching your videos. If I had it to do over again and I was 30 years younger I might attempt what you're doing and Northern Maine or Northern New Hampshire. Shawn, as far as building goes, when you finally got that screened in porch finished I was sooooo happy for you. I deal with mosquitos and other flying bugs all the time and REALLY appreciated that construct. Hope to see you do a door replacing that window soon. Your garden looks great... and for the pond I suggest a solar powered fountain. I have one small scale in my bird bath and it serves me well. But, you'll be in trouble with that water, and even Callie's health if you don't circulate that water somehow. it shouldn't take a lot of solar power to run a pump/fountain like that. You are an inspiration to me, as I started caring for this property to help my mom when my idea of home improvement was to call the office on the way to work and be greeted with a note on the door assuring me the problem had been addressed when I got home. My idea of gardening was to take the dead plant (singular) to the dumpster on the way to Kroger to get a new plant. 30 years later I no longer have my mom but this property is productive and beautiful thanks to the help and education from people like you. This Old House and Victory Garden were my teachers in the beginning.

Thank you for the visit to the garden. Jim laughs and smiles... and is a little envious at the beautiful new red potatoes you are eating. I think that you will really like the root cellar that you are going to build. I was thinking... Rome wasn't built in a year... your homestead won't be complete soon. But, you are doing a good job. I sympathize in the heat. Good for growing things... but bad for working in. I hope you got a few fish. Forgive me for saying... but I like the life of Reilly you are sharing with us. I call it surrogate wilderness living. Living thru your experiences. I wonder if carrots would grow in your beds? I like that you are growing 2 crops. I will be very interested to see what you plant for a second crop. I wish you could keep more potatoes for the winter. I felt bad for you... having to make all of that cement for the foundation. I know how long it takes to make just one wheel barrow of cement. Let alone... probably 100... like you had to make. I was also thinking the other day... of how funny the relationship we have with you is. Never really meeting the guy... and yet seeing him twice a week. I enjoy it... it just struck me as unusual. Who would have ever thought tho... that we could get paid for sharing our experiences. You are doing a good job of it, and I thank you very kindly for it. Have another dip in the lake for me. Big smile.
