Hey I live in the neighborhood. Veggie castle does itel vegan food and caters to the demographic of the Neighbourhood which is largely West Indian. They make Lo Mein because it’s a widely popular dish in the Carribean due to the East Asian influence via indentured labor from the 1800s and the East Indian influence hence the curry chickpeas.

I'm so glad for this comment I'm Afro Latina (Puerto Rican and Guyanese) and my Guyanese (Indo roots are three to four times removed; my dad had two direct Afro Guyanese parents) dad would get lo mein a lot and him and my grandmother explained the history of lo mein in Guyana just like you did.

Their lo mein has curry n stuff because it’s not Asian... Veggie Castle is a Caribbean restaurant & that’s how Guyanese ppl do it so that’s a totally different vibe. their ginger chicken is theee best! Also their veggie filled patties are *chef’s kiss*

Have you tried Pick n Eat on 177 in Washington heights or Cassava House on 2nd ave in East Harlem? I know uptown is a bit far for you but those are amazing spots. I have a spot in my heart for cassava house because the owner is amazing and they have great outdoor seating and it’s never packed. Pick n eat has an amazing vegan menu that’s outta control. There’s also veganhood which is literally 3 blocks from my new apartment and I haven’t ordered from yet lol ALSO mthr vegan moved to the east side and has new menu items since the last time you went!

Hi VeganBodegaCat, I’ve been watching your videos for a few years and I really enjoy them, but every time you come to Queens you act like your visiting a foreign country and I feel like you low key shame our wonderful borough! My wife and I were watching this video and were totally displaced by your crack house comment. First off, there aren’t crack houses around that part of Liberty Ave or the surrounding area of Veggie Castle BUT even if there was, why in the world would you say that when you’re promoting a vegan restaurant? Not only was it alarming, but also ignorant and just completely unnecessary. You shouldn’t come into neighborhoods that you know nothing about and make such comments. There is a wonderful vegan/vegetarian bakery called Rose Valley Cakes on the same block and another vegan restaurant called Vegan 360 next door. Liberty Ave has some West Indian Grocers with lots of options for vegans to choose from as well. I hope you find my comment with good intentions. ~Erin
@bodegacatx4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yeah I definitely shouldn’t have made that comment so flippantly. My apologies. Queens definitely isnt a foreign country to me as I grew up going there often! I’m going to be more mindful of my comments going forward. As for the bakery, I definitely missed out! I had a few people tell me about it the last time I went to veggie Castle but I totally forgot about it this time around. Guess I have to go back sometime!

Just wanna say I really like your reviews but when you go to Richmond hill with a predominantly poor Guyanese population and say stuff like you’ve parked in front of a crackhouse it comes off as very classist and like you don’t know that much about the places you’re visiting which is disappointing and exactly what people critique about veganism which is that it’s reserved for white people...another reason why mostly OGs like this place bc it’s not in a gentrified neighborhood
@bodegacatx4 жыл бұрын
I understand what you’re saying but I grew up in neighborhoods just like this. It was most definitely a crack house and perhaps I shouldn’t of said that so flippantly but neighborhoods like this is part of what makes New York City home for me and I definitely don’t belittle them. I will however, be more aware of how I choose my words in the future. Thank you.

I feel you. Didn't want to say anything, and seem sensitive, cause as a person myself who splits my time between NY and Baltimore, I have made my share of "crack house" jokes/comments in private. Just think when reviewing a Caribbean restaurant that's bringing healthy vegan food to a diverse (mostly poc) neighborhood, on a worldwide platform (youtube), it's unfortunate that drugs have to be a part of the narrative. But, it is what it is. Everyone has the right to call 'em as they see 'em
@Iankandyman4 жыл бұрын
I was born her and grew up/ lived here for 25 years. I mean if it looks like a crack house and Rebecca said it in NYC slang it Means like a poorer neighborhood. I didn't care what she said. If the people make it look a certain way. You gonna say what it looks like. Am I right?
@bodegacatx4 жыл бұрын
@@Iankandyman I didn't even mean it to say "poor neighborhood" It was a literal crack house. Like with boarded up doors and bars on all the windows, completely trashed on the inside and needles on the stairs/yard. I grew up in not-great areas of Brooklyn and I know a crack house when I see one. But I do understand that people in the neighborhood might be offended so im going to be more wise with what I point out in the future. I want my page to be a positive one so I need to find the balance between positivity and being down to earth.
