This is so informational. I actually sold my 2019 Chevrolet pickup because I got tired of every time I let it sit for a couple days I would have to jump it off. Went through 3 batteries and several trips to Chevrolet dealerships and other mechanics and no one could diagnose the problem. Such an easy fix and they couldn't find it! Bad deal for Chevrolet because i had been a chevy guy for thirty years and will never buy another one because that one was undependable.

Hello from London. My car had a feature which meant that the radio would switch off when the driver's door was opened. I kept getting a flat battery until one day my neighbour mentioned that she heard my radio playing music some nights when she came home at 3 in the morning from her night shift! I started always turning off the radio manually and that fixed the issue. The switch on the door was re-activating randomly to turn on the radio.

Great video! I’ve been chasing a possible issue with our 2007 Ford Edge with intermittent depleted battery. Since our retirement, vehicle usage is significantly less, sometimes falling into the 3-4 week range for this vehicle as we have been using the 2012 Escape more frequently. Now understanding what the typical current draw should be and an expected non-use battery life of about 4 weeks I can better evaluate what may/may not be a problem. Thanks for the very detailed explanation!

If I don't turn the radio off when I turn the ignition off, my radio turns itself on randomly and drains the battery. I've been sure to turn the radio off every time, but still have the parasitic drain. I do not have a multimeter and nobody to assist but your video showed me to just pull the radio fuse, to see if this solves my problem. Thank you so much 😊

Great video. I finally hooked my phones blue tooth up to my truck, just after 9 months. I feel like it’s causing my battery to drain. I had a phone hooked up to it originally , but I got a new phone. I had a dead battery before. It’s probably not coincidence that this happened the day after I hooked my new phone up

Fantastic video, however you cannot really do this with today's modern vehicles because pulling the fuse will wake up other modules and you'll be chasing it for a long time. In my opinion it's better to time out the vehicle until the modules go to sleep, and then do a voltage drop test with a Volt meter across the top of the fuses or measure with a low voltage amp clamp.

In todays modern cars you would have to loop in the multi meter and wait 20 minutes for the computer to go to it's static which means don't open doors and make sure all charging devices in the car are unplugged. There is usually another fuse box inside the car to the bottom left of the steering wheel in most cases.

Really good Video! Most people tend to look for the complicated issues first when it usually is a simple fix. I would use alligator clips attached to my meter or probe or probes so as not to have to hold the probes manually on the battery or cables during diagnosis. I am an alternating current man myself so working on cars and trucks is kinda foreign to me so I usually find someone else to trouble shoot for me and if I knew some of your tricks I probably would not have needed them in the past. Many thanks.

Damn. I hate running down shorts in a car. Had a son-in-law (for a minute, glad he's gone) that would drive to where he needed to be, and unhook the negative cable from his battery before leaving the car. Did it for about three years on this one old Chrysler he drove before he wised up enough to dump it for another car. My generation was taught to take care of a car the way it needed to be taken care of, the generation following mine got the idea that they had to go to school to learn how to check the damn oil!

When the vehicle is switched off, “Typically, the normal amount of parasitic draw is between 50 and 85 milli amps in newer cars and less than 50 milli amps for older cars.” A parasitic draw above this threshold is considered excessive. I have seen some vehicles that have a lot of electronics features can be in the range 120 milli amps. If you add some dash cams with standby motion monitoring and or extra security devices, these devices will pull a bit more. You would have to consult the manufacture's specs for current draw and add this amount to the vehicle's normal parasitic current draw to have the total current draw. With an on board vehicle tracker and a few dash cams you could end up having in the range of 200 to 300 milli amps. It would be important to have a very healthy battery, because it will run down faster.

There's a high draw because capacitors and systems are pulling as you first connect, then will drop after 10 mins, then you pull fuses leaving the multimeter connected

Yes I had a special test lamp to test for load draw on the newer cars or any vehicle. You're only allowed so many milliamps draw and if your battery keeps going dead you will destroy the battery the negative plates will sulfate and can't be unsulfate. Do you have a special battery charger and sometimes that won't work either. You should have no more than.200milliamps that's less than a quarter of a amp.

neighbor had a young jaguar. Battery kept dying while parked. Dealer kept for a week doing these tests, consulting with other dealers, still stumped. Never occurred to them that the first step is to disconnect battery wires (after connecting a survival battery to the car electronics) and if the battery charge drops quickly with no wires connected, THE BATTERY HAS DIED INTERNALLY. That was the case.

After you pulled the fuse you getting 0.7 amp which is 700 mili amp way higher , you can’t have more than 50 mili amp. After connecting the meter you wake up the module and you get high number if you wait couple of minutes the number may go down to normal draw.

My Accord kept killing new batteries of charge. I finally took it in to a Honda dealership, and they said they could find no parasitic drain anywhere, and charged me $180 for checking. However, they apparently FIXED the problem without knowing it because no problems since! Loose connection somewhere?
