Funnily enough, with the Lighthouse being in the Fade, it actually is a neat touch to have it react when your companions need your attention that way. Like, they start going "Man, I think I need to talk to Rook..." and the lighthouse goes "Oh! I'll let them know!" and lights their room up so you see.

Agreed. Liking what I see and enjoying the promotional info they're putting out with the Vows and Vengeance podcast, etc. Reminds me of the behind the scenes clips with the cast of Inquisition before it came out. But yeah, the Bioware party is over. No preorders, no splurging. I'll probably get it day 1 but they have to earn back trust.

I was surprised by the art style at first, but I've grown to rather like it, and I do wonder of it's part of why the game has such low minimum PC specs - they want as many people as possible to be able to play...

​@@MDKSjI can't think of any games that have no indicator for aoes /bombs. If you want to be technical about it, the only games that don't have these aoes or games that have indicators that a grenade was just thrown near you, but that's also not immersive. What would be immersive and also very unfun is it if you were fighting an enemy and then another enemy behind you throw a bomb at you and there was no indicator at all and it was off camera and then you died. That would be immersive also shitty but immersive. Also, enemies attacking while off camera is also immersive.

​@@subterragaming836 Given how blood magic is a no-go, I doubt we'd have a chance at having an actual evil playthrough, much like the inquisition. Granted, considering the situation this would have been actually the first game that even a good rook could safely use blood magic (not human sacrifices ofc, just regular palm cutting), because firstly we're in northern thedas, secondly even the southern chantry is nowhere as powerful as before and depending on your choices in DAI, the (southern) templar order no longer exists. Considering we don't get blood magic even in this state of the world convinces me that there won't really be an evil playthrough option.

I got stuck on that too. I mean, it can in no way shape or form affect me and my enjoyment, what settings someone uses in their own little game somewhere else. Why degrade them? It's like saying: if you play hardcore, you are no longer playing an rpg, but a strategy game. Or if you play on easy, you just read a virtual novel. Normal is the only normal after all. :D I am glad for the option. I will try without it, but if I get frustrated, I'll use the built in walkthrough instead of google, I guess.

I love what I have seen and have waited 10 years to play this game, so I am extremely excited, especially after all the reveals thus far. Also, as a woman who loves creating pretty characters, the hair looks absolutely fabulous and the physics for the hair are amazing. The world environments look stunning, and the combat looks so much more fun than inquisitions combat, which I found to be very boring since you could literally just stand there as a mage and use staff or spells to easily kill enemies. The Veilguards combat has more action and movement and looks so much smoother and fluid, which I absolutely love. Cannot wait to play on October 31st. Already preordered the game on steam the day it was up for sale.

I think the games industry has reached that point of diminishing returns when it comes to graphics, so I applaud Bioware for going for more stylized character designs, even if it doesn’t always land. Personally, I like it! The Qunari Rooks we’ve seen look a bit off, but I hope we can fix that when we get our hands on the character creator.

@@MyZ001 I had the strong impression that someone - anyone - said that it lookes like fortnite and after that, this was only repeated without factchecking :D Like, holding an image of fortnite and DATV beside each other, you would NOT mistake one for the other at all, not even from 1km away. it is stylized, but so are a whole lot of other games. If anything, I think it looks like DAI to the max. (I personally wouldn't have chosen the ultraviolett UI though)

If you look at the system requirements on steam you will see why I’m okay with this art style. My friend who’s broke 24-7 will actually be able to play this game on his computer and he’s a huge fan of Dragon Age. To me the characters look fine. They’re more stylized rather than trying to go for a more realistic look and while the previous game kinda tried you can’t tell me they were successful in any of the dragon age games. One thing I don’t like is the demon and blight design change. That was unnecessary.

I think, based on what I've seen so far, the three things that make Rook special are: only they can access the lighthouse and grant others permission to reside there, you have an Evanuris in your head, and you have that Evanuris' magical dagger which Solus went through a lot to get following the Trespasser dlc.

Gaming went mainstream. Especially Dragon Age series. It happens to almost every IP once it get's popular. Also DA1 Origins fans are probably less than 10% of all Dragon Age fans in 2024. Most grow up with Inquisition. And many gamers that Veilguard tries to target are probably younger than Origins (2009). Time flies. A bit sad as a RPG and Origins fan, but you can't deny facts. Look at Larian, Owlcat or Spiders if you are looking for more classic Bioware like games.

Don't trust any pre release impressions or reviews for any videogame. Wait for the release day and then from that point, at least 2 more weeks to get average player reviews for example from Steam. In 2024 there is no point in pre ordering or playing a game on release day and being patient can save your money if the game ends up bad. You will also be saved from potential day one bugs and issues. Pre orders were invented in the previous century since back then publisher could actually run out of physical copies of games and waiting for more could take weeks. That's no longer the case since 99% of games are digital in 2024. Currently pre orders are just encouraging publishers to release broken and unfinished low quality games since they already have your money.

He was forgettable. That’s almost worse than being bad. We only ran into him like 3 times the entire game and he was mostly inactive the majority of the game. He looked cool. He sounded cool, but he was not memorable and that was a letdown.

He was a missed opportunity. The finsl battle was underwhelming, which was sad. Exodus from Haven is the last emotional high point, however it was not at the end of the story. I liked Inquisition even with its flaws, but the antagonist was one of its weakest points next to the wrong frequency of emotional arch. The Trespasser was a much better ending point.

Very excited that this will hopefully be the first Dragon Age where I won't care for mods at all (unless there is one to get my own griffin). Most of the mods I use for games are for the character's appearance and their gear. With what I've seen, everything looks great. The only thing I've seen so far that I"m not a fan of is the approval/disapproval system. Feels like damned if you do, damned if you don't. Oh well.

The combat is the main aspect for this game for me- and it’s super dumbed down. I get it has to bring in new players, but it has actually made me very cautious, and has prompted me to wait a few months before I buy. For me, it has ditched what made Dragon Age a Dragon Age game and went full Mass Effect- reduction of powers, reduction in party size, took away the ability to control party members and even took away the tactical top down view. This seems like a major step backwards. With that, I will have to wait before I choose to buy and will rely on content creators to give a real rating for we know we cannot trust magazines like IGN, for this is going to be a 7 or higher in their eyes. Hopefully by the time I decide to get it, the saviors over at Nexus Mods will have some fun things to make the game better

One good point I've seen others bring up, is that the stylized rather than realistic art style is probably what helps making the required specs be lower, opening up the game for more and more people to play!

I actually like the art style mostly. The only thing I don't like is the Qunari design. Their foreheads are too smooth and the parts where the horns are growing out should look like wrinkled skin. Look at animals with antlers or horns. The skin is not smooth around the horn.

I know what the problem is with the character art style. It isn't the models themselves (except for Qunari, with the ridiculous forehead horn bone thing going on), it is the style of shaders, for lack of a better term. Comparing it with how skin textures looked in Inquisition, if they had implemented that same style of texture to Veilguard characters it would have looked absolutely superb. It is the fact that there is hardly any reflection on skin surfaces which makes the characters not sit right in the environment. It is like BioWare intentionally tried to beautify character appearances. It should be a relatively simple thing to fix, but BioWare isn't going to make any changes now. The visual style is locked in with all the marketing footage they have shown. Personally, it is something I will get over because the game offers SO MUCH MORE, but it is a shame how they went with this art style on skin textures.

It seems like typical Bioware overcorrection. In DAI everyone looked sweaty and glossy. So they probably were like "We will fix it by not having roughness/glossines on skin" It's a shame, I was looking forward to a game that would look as gorgeous as Anthem. Since Bioware seemed to learn how to do pretty graphics with it.

The skin textures in Inquisition was horrific, in my opinion. The way it looked in most cutscene lighting made my character look anemic or sickly. Regardless of what makeup I used. Too much they then looked like a clown in the wrong lighting. I think the whole reason they chose these shaders was to correct that. It’s STILL Frostbite engine remember.

I'm leaning toward PC (bc I like mods and max quality graphics), but I wanna use a controller. Does anyone know if the PC version includes a controller option? Like: can I use my PS5 controller for this game on PC?

It does look really good. I'm tempted to pre-order but I'm holding off on a purchase until I hear it's more than a 25 hour single play through experience. Usually high action things like this tend to burn bright and fast. If that's the case I'll wait for a 50% off sale.

I agree. I am liking the combat changes even if we can’t directly control my other characters. Not a huge loss here Ben the changes they made. Also agree the environments look awesome but I am not too fond of the art direction, but it’s serviceable. All I need is the story to be solid and robust companions and I will be happy.

Yeah..... I'm probably never going to play a qunari Rook ever. That's fine though. I've felt that if you don't play an a mage or, when possible, an elf the the story of dragonage just doesn't hit the same. Literally the only character I completed dao with that wasn't an elven mage was my 2 handed warrior cousland queen. I played every origin but I've never finished them (only the one cousland and like 6 elven mage). Preferred DA2 as mage (it just seemed ro fit the tone and story better) and personally if you played inquisition as anything other than an elven mage? I would make the argument that you played it wrong 😅 (in my opinion! Don't lynch me, but seriously, Ameridan in JoH and fen'harel in trespassers. How do you even pick another species and class. When I first found ameridan as my twin knife qunari rogue, I quit to main menu, deleted my quanari pc and started a male elf mage playthrough with a thing for nevarran women with swords and shields and a love of poetry 😅

The art style in Veilguard is absolutely my favorite in the series, expecially the NPCs and the PC. I thought the characters looked horrible in Inquisition. So much so that I found it distracting and immersion breaking. They were just ok in Origins and DA2. Those could be forgiven considering the tech at the time. But Inquisition, YUK. Also, IMO, one of the best things they did was get rid of us controlling our companions. This is a ROLE PLAYING game. There is nothing more immersion breaking than leaving your own body and zipping into the body of a companion. I can't figure out why anyone would complain about getting rid of that.

the biggest problem for me it's the colorful low quality VFX and particle effect, bare bone combat and finally, abysmal lighting quality that's not even god can help it . floaty movement in combat and lacking punch on the attack, and strategy was focus almost entirely on reaction based. i'm sure this game doesn't even need companion to get through the game. it's all about reaction and spamming attack. this is NOT dragon age.

I understand you don't see it the same way as me - but if I was 'scared' of being made fun of I wouldn't be covering a game (and other games) that consistently put my opinions under crosshairs. It's much more likely that it is, in fact, my opinion. This video and many of the others I have made for Dragon Age I consistently defend it and suggest that others give it a chance. It's almost like some people expect it to be infallible, or irredeemable, but no in-between.

​@@Dantics I agree about the art style. For me the art style just seems very cartoony or Fortnite-ish which makes the thought of seeing nudity in the game a little weird. It also makes the enemy designs seem very "family friendly", if that makes sense, or just downright goofy instead of menacing or scary. The game is visually gorgeous but the art style just doesn't match the mature tone of the game.

My only concern is the party, and if they can actually go down or are useless or helpful. I'm not seeing health bars or the devs showing them in combat enough to justify their companions focus.

I still have my concerns about companions/romance characters, the limited spells/abilities and faster gameplay and if the AI for the companions will be any good (can we put in preset commands) like in Origins and DA2 or will the companions need a babysitter throughout gameplay 🤔 Do not get me wrong here, I am cautiously optimistic and very much look forward to the game but, I do have concerns still 🤪
