like..... have a bit of asupernatuarl element creeping into the story. then you could use that supernatural element to justify scooby existing. Mystery inc in fact did that. weird god alien ghosts that had a tendency to posses animals to commune with humans. They have it that these hosts will have children and some will retain sentience like they do. Scooby doo is a descendant of them and that is why he' sentient. They could ahve it that the reason brains are being stolen is cause some eldritch thingamabob likes to eat brains. ahve it that it traps the spirits. And have it that scoobie is one of the previous victims that possessed a great dane. Fuck have it that they have to use drugs to commune with him. Believe it or not using drugs has always been tied to religion and spirituality. foot in both worlds and such.

On meta humor, this (paraphrased) quote has stuck with me “Who is smarter? The person who runs into a wall, makes a joke about running into a wall, runs into the wall again, makes another joke about it, runs into the wall again and again and again, and doesn’t go on a cool adventure? Or the person who runs into the wall, recovers, and then goes on a cool adventure?”

Maybe that one who constantly run into wall (and the wall became his worst enemy) won´t get killed on cool adventure where there is super villain who will torment him for long time and then he dies. So that is pretty good question.

This is something my best friend told me a long time ago that for some reason left an impression on me. I asked her why she liked Scooby-Doo because I was never really into it, I found it kind of boring honestly. She answered, " I think I love their dynamic. It's a simple but charming concept. In a normal situation these stereotype characters would hate each other or at least not want to be around each other. But the one thing they have in common is their passion for mysteries, they all love hunting mysteries and genuinely treat each other well. They are true friends and also good people." After she said that I kind of understood the innocent joy she got from the series. That was its charm. With that as my only understanding of the Scooby-Doo series I could see this show was a mistake from the start. All the charm was stripped from it and replaced with the tropes of someone that's filled with distrust and a desire to watch other people fail as miserably as them. The funny thing is, there's a way to do all that right, and they missed at every shot.

Making every single character in adult animations a spiteful asshole to eachother is another aspect of the 'meta' shit that's plaguing media right now. It's why people seem to think old shows, like Scooby Doo, were just 'boring', because the characters didn't take every opportunity to shit on eachother for cheap jokes.

Someone on twitter pointed out that this show flopped while Harley Quinn suceeded despite having very similar comedy components because the characters in Harley Quinn behave in ways that feel like organic extensions of their pre-stablished personalities, somewhat comically exaggerated to both clash against regular people and to point out how crazy some of the DC premises are. This, in contrast, only supplant the characters' personality in favor of making snarky ocs that dont resemble the character they're based on in the least

Apparently, the people behind the show wanted to make an original show that starred a south asian female character but the studio didnt think it would be profitable and forced them to make a scooby doo show instead. This definitely explains why the show was written like this. The writers were pissed that they couldn't release an original show that starred a South asian female character, so they wrote the Scooby-Doo doo characters and the show that way to get back at the studio. We need to see the draft of the original show they wanted to release. [Edit: Apparently, the higher-ups also wouldn't let them add scooby-doo into the show. The higher-ups definitely set up Velma to fail.]

What's weirder is that the show Supernatural-- a show that's definitely not for kids-- did a crossover with Scooby-Doo for an episode that had Scooby himself in the episode, but had more mature elements. Now better idea for this series: 1. Have it follow a group of FANS of the original gang *Whom dispersed sometime after a mystery gone wrong* 2. Have the "velma" reading the biographies written by OG Velma. *Basically a similar thing that velma had for Ravencroft* 3. Have the new gang consist of: Nerdy Girl(Velma parallel), Weak Guy (Shaggy parallel), Valley Girl (Daphne Parallel), Jock (Fred Parallel), Dog (Scooby Parallel). 4. Have the dog actually be a tiny chihuahua that is actually the JOCK's dog instead, whom likes to stay in either his pocket. OR could make the jock carry a man-purse. Possibly give the dog a deep voice, like Kevin Micheal Richardson perhaps. 5. Have potential interactions with the original gang, reveal the OG Fred got framed for a string of murders final one being that of OG Daphne. *Shaggy became a chef who is a mix of Gordan Ramsey AND Anton Ego from ratatouille after falling out of love with food.* Scooby being a mean SOB, velma being a lonely schizophrenic in an old house, etc. 6. Have references to many old characters, maybe even giving Scrappy Doo a menacing role that DIRECTLY ties in to the live action movies. *Basically he captured the real 13th ghost and took it's powers, combining it with residual energy from the Daemon Ritus he was in. Becoming.. Scrappitious the shadow sorcerer*

One additional possibility for Scooby is that, to parallel Mystery Incorporated in some way, he’s locked up in a insane animal asylum, perhaps due to unknown genetic mutations that weren’t apparent when he was young, and that’s the reason Shaggy fell out of love with food. Maybe give the new gang the same naïvety that the standard cast does. (with the sole exception of the dog, who’s pessimistic and very much ignorant of any danger, that would be hilarious). Perhaps also keep the exact identities of the original cast a secret from the audience whenever they appear, but not too subtle. Overall far better ideas than what Velma did.

@@FrostGlader The old group rather than the gang we know. On the whole, second generation stories where we find out the OG's you loved had miserable endings don't tend to get warmly embraced. Also I'm pretty sure a sniper will take me out if I say anything remotely critical about Mystery Incorporated, but it did also lean a tad meanspirited. Not overwhelmingly, and it balanced out with earnestness and played the harsher world as something to be overcome. However I am getting a little tired of snarkier Scooby Doo takes.
@FrostGlader
@FrostGlader Жыл бұрын
@@gota7738 I won’t shoot you down for an opinion lol, but yes, M-Inc was more pessimistic than other Scooby Doo series traditionally are. I think it was to better fit the darker tone the series as a whole has more than anything, but it can be a little mean to the characters at times (The Sheriff, for example, can be particularly mean). The Mayor is another good example: too blinded by potential fortune and publicity to allow the group to investigate people _literally getting kidnapped._ I think one of the funniest examples is the instance of Scrappy Bashing it has, acting like his existence was a traumatic event for the cast. It’s also why I mentioned “don’t make it clear that it’s the main group initially” in my main response comment. In M-Inc the Radio Host the Gang hangs out with isn’t initially known to have been part of the old group, and it’s only revealed when Velma notes that she knows a little too much about Crystal Cove to have only recently moved there. It could be something similar to that, with Shaggy being the common recurring character. Perhaps it could be an Alt Universe version of the Mystery Incorporated gang that never caught onto the Curse of Crystal Cove, and thus fell victim to it. And have the small dog be fully aware of it, including the cause and how to stop it, but not wanting anything to do with it. Have it be the cause of Velma’s mental issues (she was the main one interested in solving the curse). One possibility is if during a encounter with her in her home, the dog straight up mentions the coffin in passing, and that snaps Velma out of a crazed ramble, into a somewhat sane state of mind. I also think it would be funny if Fred was literally no different from how he was in Mystery Incorporated, but he still hasn’t moved on from Daphne’s death (still in the denial stage). Him being the only one who gets name dropped early in a way to prevent it from becoming clear he’s kinda not in the best way. I also know of the distaste towards the “OG’s Terrible Fate”, but it can be done. Perhaps have serious underlying tones, treat the audience like humans. Again: Shaggy fell out of love with food because it just didn’t taste the same without Scoob, and thus became an aggressive chef. Velma went insane trying to solve the Mystery of Crystal Cove, and became intensely afraid of something that isn’t there, Fred is still suffering from the trauma of Daphne’s death, and hasn’t gotten over it even after all these years. And Scooby Doo, with unknown mutations, has Shaggy trying to cure whatever it is that cause the change in his best friend. Perhaps also have it so Daphne hasn’t moved on herself, and her Ghost still exists in her old, abandoned family home, with her haunting creating illusions to protect Fred from the sad truth. Maybe the family is trying to sell the estate again during the series, but Daphne’s haunting is preventing it, with Fred being worried about her “leaving”. It could be played with Fred being introduced, going to visit Daphne, the House looking old and abandoned, but lively inside, with the dog, while Fred is out of hearing range, outright calling her death out and the place being haunted. Perhaps link it all back to that Curse, something that has canonically always caused these rifts in the groups of old, and have it so the group sets things into motion to stop the curse, eventually changing everything into a good state like they did in Mystery Inc, with the dog noting this.

The Harley Quinn writers obviously love the DC universe and pull some very deep cuts for characters and concepts while doing its own the thing with those characters. Velma from the two episodes I’ve watched thinks they are on a joke and understand it, but they do not. It comes off as “Look how stupid this thing is after I take away its most defining traits”. The fact that there's no "I can't see without my glasses" bit when she loses them honestly speaks volumes about the show as a whole. -It misrepresents Velma, who does that every time she loses her glasses in the original cartoon -It clearly shows that Mindy doesn't know that or doesn't care to preserve anything abput the original character except her looks and her wardrobe, which she also changes. - It misses the chance to subvert the trope ("Ah! I HATE when this happens! It always takes a stupid amount of time for me to find the damn glasses and I got in trouble because of it!"), not that it would be any good, seeing their numerous other attempts at doing so - Missed the chance to give a character like Fred a hint of likeability. Like, he's a huge douche all the time, but when Velma's glasses come off he just casually goes "here ya go" without hesitation, hinting that maybe after some development he won't be a dick anymore. While Be Cool Scooby Doo didn't have the best designs, it was a whole lot better written. The gags were on the whole funnier, the monster designs were cool, it has some of the best chase music in the framchise, and it's arguably the show that best demonstrated how close the gang are. The first episode has a bit where the gang start ripping into each other at first only to end up praising each other in the end. Another has Fred, who was portrayed as a control freak in the show, willing to give up his leadership role for Shaggy, just so Shaggy can make his grandmother proud.

My problem with the whole meta-humor angle is that Scooby-Doo as a franchise has been doing that kind of humor on-and-off already for decades now. I want to say "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" was when the franchise first leaned into making fun of itself and that was all the way back in the 80s. Plus it's been parodied by external media for ages too. As far as mature Scooby-Doo interpretations go, ‘The Venture Bros’ had a parody where Freddie was Ted Bundy, Daphne was Patty Hearst, Velma was Valerie Solanas and Shaggy was “Sammy” (AKA David Berkowitz or the ‘Son of Sam’), with Scooby being a dog only the latter could see or hear speaking. It was really fun, but it was unfortunately just a one-off.

Velma feels like a show made with the hope that Mindy Kaling having been in The Office would be enough for it to succeed and Scooby Doo isn't in it probably due to them being worried that he'd justifiably steal the spotlight given even a basic joke with him would be funnier than the meta humor.

Someone pointed out that it would actually be better if they just made it a straight up parody instead. That way they would dodge all negative feedback on changing all the characters. By using the Scooby IP, they force the viewers to compare it to the other shows and point out everytime it's different, which is an even bigger problem when the most apperant thing like the main characters are nothing like what they used to be and not in a good way either.

There was already something like this. It was called Daphne and Velma, pretty sure it was a direct to video movie (I could be wrong about that though) and it focused on the two of them before Mystery Inc was founded. I'm pretty sure Scooby himself wasn't in it either. And it also only got a meh reception. So trying something like that again wasn't a good idea from the start.

I find it hilarious that Kaling wasn't associated with Scooby-Doo, but admitted the title character is "too childish", and made this as David Zyslav snuffs out anything on HBO Max, especially with Looney Tunes recently. I had hope for this but not anymore; it felt like Velma was another generic adult cartoon nowadays. I mean, adult versions of Hanna-Barbera shows worked when Adult Swim became a thing more than 20 years ago, as Williams Street was created. So it continues to go wrong as of the 2010s to present. HBO Max is gonna go down the toilet, but there is still hope. Same goes with Netflix animation.
@JeffreyThrash
@JeffreyThrash Жыл бұрын
I have hope for Netflix animation, as Del Toro's Pinocchio, Sonic Prime, Arcane and the Sea Beast show they at least half-care about animation fans, if not the animators behind their shows (The cancellation of the second season of Inside Job right after they fully finished everything is cruel, though I fully agree with Pan's take that the show wasn't top-tier, just good at best). It's tough to imagine HBO Max doing much better, though. I almost got a subscription myself last year, but Zaslav just kept removing everything old and new on it and I can't subscribe to perhaps the most expensive streaming service out there if it's going to take away content while asking for my money. Worse, Zaslav is also planning on periodically hiking up the price despite the service offering customers far less than they did merely a year ago, just because Disney Plus and Netflix are doing it and his team feels they should do that, too. I just don't see how removing everyone's favorite content (including live-action DC stuff) combined with drastically increasing subscription fees is even remotely sustainable for any streaming service business. Even if Velma inexplicably becomes a viral success like Amazon Prime's Rings of Power and non-gamers enjoy the shot-for-shot remake of The Last of Us's cutscenes HBO Max, that's just two popular shows that might stay while hundreds of other more-popular stuff leaves.

Y'know, this is just reminding me that of all shows to really get the tone and characters for Scooby Doo right, it was Supernatural. That crossover was kinda like this in terms of humor but it also stayed true to what made the original show amazing, kept the characters as is and did their due diligence while also making things probably the most fucked up possible, and that's even compared to Zombie Island. It also shows that Mindy saying they couldn't use Scooby because it'd ruin the concept is a crock of shit because he was right there, front and center in an episode of a show filled with murder and gore while still acting like.... well, Scooby. Plus the scene where they find out that Sam and Dean really do fight actual monsters and that people are dying around them and they just lose their shit was genuinely more hilarious than anything Velma cooked up.
