I miss my Velo. Stoppping at the gas station with the GSXR1000 and the yamahas and being the center of attention... priceless and the fuel economy which reminds me of a summer I packed my tent and a big rucksack on the velo and went drove 30 km to a beach site for vacation. by the last 5 km the back tire finally blev from the weight and I had to walk the rest of the way. Had a fantastic week in the tent by the beach and took the train home with the flat velo. The train conductor just laughed and let me go on home with it

Thank you for the explanation. I had some hard time before I figured it all out when I bought one in pre-Internet era. Luckilly VeloSolex is indestructible, we are still together:-)

That was great, but it looks difficult to ride in todays traffic. Strange but true, I saw an old ('60s) Solex in Beeston today, the first I've seen since I was in France in the early '70s.

If you have to lift the engine when you stop it is not functioning correctly. It has a centrifugal over ride clutch that only turns in one direction. I had one new around 1974, it had a centrifugal clutch. Mine was Orange and I put many miles on it! Top speed was 22 miles per hour. The colored models in Canada were upscale versions with a white engine, upgraded kick stand and smaller wheels with white wall tires. Mine was either a 4600 or 5000. Admitted I had to use Wikipedia to confirm some of my recollections.

another velo story: the nearest beach was ~5 km from where I lived. Used to drive down there every other dayon the velo to swim. Just me in my swim trunks and a towel on the back. Got pulled over by the police and got a fine for not having a helmet on (which is nonsense as even the cyclist were overtaking me and they weren't required to wear a helmet.. yeah danish laws) well.. the very next day I went to the beach again the same way and got pulled over again and the same police officer starterd with "**refusist"* this is gonna be a expensive summer for you" Now I ride a bicylce at twice the speed of the velo and dont need a helmet. oh well

I guess the law is the law. Here in the UK, if your Velosolex isn't correctly insured, you would have the bike seized and a big fine and points on your driving licence. You could theoretically lose your car driving licence in a machine capable of jogging pace. I'm in the process of getting my two eBay purchased Velosolex road registered. It's a pain in the arse with lots of hoops to jump through.

@@superbracey ouch thats tough. Here you could get stopped 100s of times with no other consequences than the fine being over 16yo all you need is cheep (veteran vehicle) insurance and you're good to go (or ride) man I miss my velo solex

I’m intrigued with these Velo’s, I’ve never had one, I’m assuming you still need it to be insured, taxed etc for road use and you have to legally wear a helmet?

You do not need to lift the engine when stopped.The engine should idle correctly with the centrifugal clutch slipping slightly to allow idle.This clutch never fully disengages.

U do not need to disengaged the engine at a stop only hold front break it has an automatic clutch

My best guess is about 25 mph. This feels plenty fast enough considering it has no suspension, bicycle brakes and very thin wheels..

I am restoring one atm, and found a handbook that says to use 6% oil and a pure mineral oil with SEA viscosity 10 or 20

Normaly 1:50 but i recomend 1:40 if its a rusty boi. You should try to use partley synthetic oil. Moddern Fullsynths are a bit overkill.
