The first ever graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize, Art Spiegelman’s “Maus” is a frank and visceral look at the Holocaust through his father’s eyes. When the schools board of the McMinn County School District in Tennessee banned the classic from the 8th grade curriculum, it was thrust back into the spotlight for a new generation of readers that badly needed it. Spiegelman famously depicts his characters in ‘Maus’ as animals - Jewish mice, Nazi cats, Polish pigs, French frogs, and American dogs -- subverting common Nazi propaganda portraying Jewish people as “rats”, “vermin”, and “sub-human”. The black-and-white drawings masterfully illustrate anguish, love, fear, and brutality. The reader is not just hearing about the depravity of the Holocaust - they’re seeing it. At its core “Maus” is a memoir -a story about the Holocaust-but it also explores intergenerational trauma, the complexities of family, mental health, and enduring love.

"Maus" was part of my Holocaust Literature unit in my English classes. When I told students there was another volume, they on their own got it -- from the library, Scholastic Books, book stores -- to read it. The school librarian order more copies because it was so much in demand. We're both now retired but wept at loss of learning for students in Florida and other places around the country and never tapping in to their yearning to read meaningful books.

Thank you for doing this interview. You’re a kind, courageous and insightful man. I treasure and proudly display your two Maus books. It seems so ironic that they might be deemed unsuitable for children who are everywhere inundated with fantastical violence. “Game Over!” and hit the “Restart” button. Maus is about real history. It’s graphic nature enables a clear identification and understanding. One of my BA.Hons majors was “propaganda, politics and film”. I saw some very sensitive films, one under strict security and only in conjunction with the accompanying lecture. In my 2nd year I also lived in Berlin and attended the Humbolt University- opposite the square where Hitler ordered so many books to be burnt. But he could never burn away the memories of the survivors and their families, and books can be written again. Context is everything and this is what you have given the world. The current fashion is to to be “hard done by” - even if one isn’t. It will pass. It will pass. Courage and patience! Anna 🇬🇧

Wow, Art sounds like the kind of man you could talk to for hours. But yes, he is very on point; the current rise in fascism is directed mainly at minorities and LGBTQ+ and the tornado monster is swallowing up those groups, while taking collateral damage in other, less directed books and themes. It should be terrifying to the average, educated person that this is happening in 2023, and the pushback should be far stronger and more vocal and outraged than it is.
