Thanks for the videos. I have a hurth hsw450 1:1. After running it wide open for an hour it blows fluid out on the input side. It happened twice after replacing the input seal.

Nice. It was like watching Steve, at his bench, calling it as he pulled down an auto AT. If only they knew where and how to look. The rest is basic 101 stuff. Super complicated cagofarfilistic 😉 😜

Chris, excellent stuff! I have a 72C mated to my starboard 454 Crusader that rotates the shaft while in neutral. Not very strong, I can stop it with my hand but it's not supposed to do that. Fluid levels are normal, both cold and hot. What do you think is the cause?

If you can stop it with your hand, don’t worry about it. It’s normal.

Great video, you do a terrific job of explaining all the parts and pieces. I have a question, what would make the transmission slow to shit into and out of gear?? I have 2 Chrysler 360's and when I shift the port engine into gear there is a good 3 or 4 second delay before it goes into gear, the starboard engine does not have that delay??? I would love to know why..... Thank you!

I'd put a pressure gauge on it and see what the pressure is. At idle it should be ~100psi. I assume you are using ATF for fluid?

Very good video just rebuild a 72c but my rear output flange is leaking , i have put right stuff and got a new flange and it still leaks any advise ?

Hello from Italy, explain to me the cause why in my inverter the shaft oil seal was expelled by the oil pressure? Another time, however, did the oil come out of the upper breather valve? Does it need to be overhauled? Thanks for your answer...

Hi...can I change a rear bearing without having to pull the drive off my motor...have access looks as though they are a snug fit, just need to remove nylock nut/rear bearing plate/gasket and should have access to bearing ??

Hi, I have an AS15-71C with a 2.91:1 reduction gear box. In the video you mentioned that there is a different rear seal for that. The kit I was going to order is the velvet drive 70C 71C 72C marine transmission super master kit on eBay. Do you know if that kit would likely have the correct seal?

My velvet 1:1 pump have a damage is it same pump fits for the 1:1 velvet and 1.56:1 velvet? I have one velvet 1.56:1 velvet drive

Morning fantastic video i have learnt a lot from this video , i have a 72c connected to v drive on boat could you possible tell me what holds the v drive to the transmission or will it come apart when i remove bolts kind regards

This video pair is a beautiful thing, my only issue is the aluminum piston is stuck, air moved it a 1/8” but no further. Should i be able to spin it in the cylinder? Can’t do that either, being aluminum i don’t want to force it. Cheers!

Do recommend the old style velvet pump that the front pump seal can`t blow out. or the new style that presses in from the front. or does it matter?

You have it backwards. The pump style with the lip (seal is installed from the rear) is the newer style. I have no preferece and use both. If we get a job in that the front seal has pushed out and during tear down I don't see a reason why I'll normally install the newest design pump with a seal lip.

I’m about to tear into this 1973 71C transition. It had well over 125 psi in reverse using the test port you show. After rebuild, what type auto transmission fluid do you recommend? Thanks

Any experience on 73c 3:1 ratio? Mine suddenly dropped forward gear without any slip. So now i hane neutral-neutral-reverce. Any suggestions?

Hi. Are you sure that the ring is not in the groove in 14.24? According to the repair manual it would be a snap ring. I have a little groove there in my velvet

Yes. There is no groove there. If there is it’s not enough to engage the snap ring. It’s a spacer.

Hello from Austria, I have a problem with my velvet drive 10-16 which is used in my jcb wheel loader model 520 4hl built in 1984. When I put it in reverse everything is normal, but when i put it in the forward gear it feels like the clutch is slipping and there is not much power at the output shaft. When the oil is cold it works better, but when its getting warm it gets worse. I think maby the o-rings of the forward piston cause the problem. I hope you can help me with my problem. I’d start with a pressure test. Sounds like an internal leak someplace. You might be on the right track!

Hi I have a Velvet drive 1:1 AS1- 71c, red tag, serial number is 105456... it only has 1 x reverse clutch disc, is that Normal? Rob

Helli sir, My gearbox reverse clutch only have one brass plate(Not 3 plates like yours)… is that normal?? I am not sure which marks and model is my velvet drive but it is connected to a classic 260HP Crusader engine

An uneven running engine such as a misfire. If the idle is too low that could also cause it. 99% of the time the transmission is not the cause.

I noticed the pump arrow is pointing left. That is a starboard trans as noted on top there. Mine is a V drive starboard and pump shows pointing right that i just took out. Is that because of the V drive? I would love to send you a pic. I hope my rebuilder got it right. Is starboard considered Standard rotation ?

That’s not always an indicator of what side the transmission is setup for. For instance a 1.88 or 1.91 is a reversing ratio. As far as your V Drive there is a configuration which is all gears (3 to be exact) or a chain version which would reverse rotation. The pump needs to be set for the direction of flywheel rotation.

More than likely. With the engine off can you rotate the output shaft in either direction? If you can't, then it needs to come out and get rebuilt.

no I can't get the output shaft to spin in either direction the only time it rotates is wen the engine is running, iv disconnected the shift cable and shifted it by hand and nothing changed, the fluid still looks new, the velvet drive is a 10-17 1 to 1 model , boat is a 79, im thinking about tearing it apart your videos are very clear and explain wat todo , my local marina hasn't worked on one in over ten years and I can't find anyone to look at it.
