Installing a cab corner rust repair panel using panel bond adhesive
In this video I show how I use fusor 110b fast set panel bond adhesive to attach the cab corner. Still use a couple of plug welds but for the top area I glue it with the panel bond due to the structural foam in the cab corner. It's the first one I've done this way so there is a bit of a learning curve but it turned out great

This is a great repair. Only thing I was taught to cover all of the bare metal inside the cab corner with the adhesive. Reason being, it will stop all future rusting on the inside. I always tape off all the gluing areas and then spray undercoating inside on both panels. Then add the adhesive.

i would use russian bearing grease inside panels , can only be applied when hot and is best with undercoating gun , sticks to metal like glue , never dries , is really thick , doesnt stink like undercoating ( they still are pulling wwii crates out of the ground over here with guns and other items inside chunk of that grease , everything looks as it was just left there ).

Jack Chrisman any cars or trucks I ever owned here in the rust belt of Ontario Canada after the paint is fully dry I drill 1/2 in holes load up an old paint gun and garden sprayer mix some chain bar oil ,canola , non detergent motor oil, kerosene and spray cab corners rockers doors hood trunk tail gate pillars wind shield frame floors under carpet and entire frames inside and out cross members making sure not to do any exhaust components. While taking precautions for personal protection oil mist fitted respirator and eye protection. I am quite certain if the truck was oil sprayed annually and this is crucial it has to be properly applied to all inner sides and welds or it won’t do much

We used Lord's adhesives in making fiberglass body panels for Camaros, Firebirds, APV vans, Navigators, Lincolns, Rangers, Mustangs and even the Plymouth Prowler (it is NOT all aluminum). I worked for the Budd Co for 11 years and can say that stuff is great. We bonded metal, various plastics and combinations with no issues. The parts from 1988 are still holding! Good stuff with no heat distortion.

Velvethamma I don't use those mixing tubes on the gun, I use a spreader to mix cause the tubes don't mix enuff. Also after the 2 panels are bonded and the excess panel bond oozes out take a grinder and get off as much as you can..Ive had the panel bond cause body fillers to pop due to chemical reaction... I only use it for replacing of roof panels now...great video ...

Keep me up to date on that repair area with the panel bond on the lap seam on the body reveal. I've been taught that it's suppose to shrink and reveal the seam so I always steered clear but I wonder. Thanks for the video Shawn.
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 10 жыл бұрын
I haven't been around it enough to know if the seam will reveal itself over time. According to Fusor, the method to keep the seam from ghosting thru is to taper the seam of the overlying panel to a "10 degree" bevel. We'll see. Normally I would weld it but if it shows later on I guess I'll have to dig it out and weld it. Or change it again

I have never used the panel adhesive, did you flange the body where you glued the new panel on? please let us know how well it bonds. I think panel adhesive will replace mig welding in the future. Scares me though a bit. Thanks for the video Learning here!
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 10 жыл бұрын
From my experience, you cannot flange a curved panel such as the cab corner. It will distort and shrink around the flange. Try it sometime and you'll see what I mean. The seam area needs to be as flat as possible to be able to clamp or screw the two together so the panel bond makes good contact. I'm certainly not an expert on panel bonding so we'll see how it stands the test of time

@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 3 жыл бұрын
Rocker panel could be weld bonded. It is structural to the cab of the vehicle. I’m not sure of the exact procedure but I would imagine that it would require several areas to be either spot welded or resistance welded. Hope that clarifies

Is this stuff strong enough to secure "gutters" underneath car doors? Sometimes called sills or rocker panels. I call them gutters because that's what they look like to me. On my Trabant, these are rusted out and if the front end is on jack stands, the doors won't open because the body flexes. So unlike the cab corner if your video, these pieces are structural because the car is a uni-body. I have new ones to go back in but these were spot welded from the factory. Rather than finding/drilling out the 50+ spot welds, I wanted to cut the old ones off using a reciprocating saw, grind the metal down where there is no rust, coat the inside of the new pieces with the Eastwoood Rust Encapsulator (which is great stuff BTW) except where the adhesive is going to to be applied and use the Lord Fusor to secure the "gutters" to the floor. I have lots of wood clamps my father bought when he did woodworking. One thing I thought about doing before installing these pieces was to weld a piece of 1" square tubing underneath the car where these panels are going to go for extra strength. In other words what I am asking is, is this stuff suitable for uni-bodies to secure metal that is structural ?
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 6 жыл бұрын
James Siebold It is a great product but I would not use it on rocker panels even though it is a structural adhesive. Weld those rocker panels in. You can resistance weld thru this stuff in certain applications. I would always suggest using ICAR repair procedures for the manufacturer of the vehicle

Sorry if you mentioned this and I missed it, but why are you using panel bond instead of welding? Noob question I know.
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 10 жыл бұрын
The area where that seam is going has urethane foam in it for strength and it can catch on fire while you are welding if you are not VERY CAREFUL. I stress that because I have seen people set fires that they didn't even know were burning until it was too late. Panel bond seemed like a safer choice although if it fails, I will end up cautiously welding and re-doing the job.

Question: How is this repair holding up? I'm thinking of using Lord Fusor on my Crew Cab for panel replacement (rust repair). Also considering for outer rocker replacement? Thoughts?
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 8 жыл бұрын
+Doug Daubert It is holding up perfect. Looks just as perfect as the day I painted it. Panel bonding adhesives are fine for cab corners, small repair panels, quarter panels, etc. DO NOT use panel bond for a rocker panel. Rocker panels are a structural cab reinforcement and I would STRONGLY encourage you to weld them in. There is a structural adhesive that the OEM's use on a lot of unibody panels that is crash rated but I still believe that a rocker panel needs to be welded. These trucks twist so much that I don't think it would be advisable to use it. I would certainly contact the adhesive manufacturer to check if you really want to use an adhesive. Most of the adhesives can be resistance spot welded thru so be careful if someone tells you that it can be used. It will still need some degree of welding.

you commented about your bevel 10%?. could you simply put the metal on and come back and grind it down a bit like you might in an overlapped weld? After bodywork and paint I had it outside in the sun and the panel bond seemed to expand and you can see the outline of the patch. Once it cooled off it went away. Do you know if this always be a problem or will the stuff harden up and stop expanding when it's hot?
