Righteously good review, man. I was a huge fan of the beat-em-up all through the '80s as well, but somehow I never came across Vendetta. I don't know if it was rare in the US or maybe I wasn't hitting the arcade as often in '91. It looks exceptional, but I have to say my the side-scrolling beat-em-up king for me was the Streets of Rage series, even if it was a home console game. And not just because they had some of the best video game music ever. Loved the game play. But having Tyson, Van Damme, the Hulkster and Mr. T on screen all at once with four friends playing is an advantage I'm not sure any game can top.

The game featured two differences in gameplay. One was that an enemy who had been knocked down could be subjected to further abuse; this feature first appeared in the first Crime Fighters, as well as Konami's previous arcade basketball game Punk Shot (1990), and an X-Men beat-'em-up. This would be done with the kick button (see below), although the actual manoeuvre used was a punch, an elbow drop, a short kick/stomp, or a quick kneedrop, depending on the individual fighter. The other difference was that instead of the conventional 'attack' and 'jump' buttons, this game used 'punch' and 'kick'. The only aerial manoeuvre was the special punch-plus-kick (P+K) manoeuvre, and only when the joystick was pointed forward. This also rules out the beat-'em-up standard desperation attack (an attack during which all enemies in a small radius around the player are knocked away and down, at the cost of player's health), forcing the player to be even more cautios.

I really liked Undercover Cops. Gorgeous game, way ahead of it's time as far as graphics and animation. Irem software was way ahead of its time as a company, and doesn't nearly get the recognition it deserves.

@@retrorystergaming577 Spent some time in Aus myself, you guys really get the shit end of the stick when it comes to games man. Sucks considering how close you are to Japan. I had a buddy that had Karate for NES, but it was prety dated by the time I got my hands on it. Shit like Double Dragon 2 was already out for the console. I used to see it at Chuck E Cheese when I was a kid, but again, by then it was so dated nobody really played it. I had no idea how significant it was to the genre as a whole. What I really want to get my hands on is one of those old After Burner units, the one with the moving cockpit. It was either broken, or had a huge line up in front of it back in the day, only played it a couple times before it disappeared. And it was fuckin expensive, like 2 bucks when everything else was like a quarter max. But if I can find one to cram in my tiny ass apartment I would. Great channel, looking forward to more of your vids.

@@RexHoles6969 Yea games movie releases everything we were always behind. I remember always being jealous of Americans because you had the WWF shows there and all the goodies in the back of the magazines. After burner was a fantastic cabinet I loved it. And yea towards the end of the Coin OP era games were waaaaaaaaaaay too expensive. 2 dollars is extortion and I remember games like NBA Jam used to cost that.

I was lucky enough to grow up with 3 buddies in my street & we had a local Timezone arcade only 3 blocks away. We would play Vendetta every Saturday together between 1991-1993. I played many beat 'em ups growing up & had Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, TMNT on the consoles. Despite my love of those & others, nothing will ever compare to the Greatness of Vendetta. To this day, nearly 30 years later, I still regard it as the greatest beat 'em up I ever played. It's just sad that most Americans (or the gamers I've spoken to) have no idea about Vendetta. Some have heard of it but have never played it. I have my fingers crossed that it will get a start as an add on game for future Arcade1up 4 player releases but I doubt it.. Loved your presentation. Just Subbed 👍🏼

The beat 'em up genre is my favorite as well and I've been saying this for years. Glad someone on youtube agrees. Hawk was always my favorite. I usually picked the strong guy in beat em ups, plus I was a major Hulkamaniac at the time. I would sometimes play as Boomer too.
