Great demo. I had no idea how that was done, and I've watched a few veneering videos over the years.

This is amazing. I've recently discovered your channel and subscribed. I just watched both part 1 and 2 of this series. While I've seen veneering done before seeing how to go about making a custom panel like this is eye opening for future projects I want to try. I'm always super excited to try new techniques

I'm glad you are enjoying it. Making some panels is the best way to really learn from the videos, and i encourage you to make some. Taking a class is a faster way to cover the same material, and I have even more tidbits when you are in the same room as me for two whole days!

So, was the panel glued on with the blue tape backing left in place? Otherwise, how were all the pieces accurately transferred and realigned on the MDF?

The front face is taped with veneer tape then left to dry. Once it's dry the blue tape is removed off of the back surface, which is then glued to the MDF. I demonstrated that in a prior Wood and Shop video so we didn't cover it here.

Would you recommend using hide glue for the veneer panel?

I use Old Brown Glue, which is urea treated hide glue, to glue marquetry panels. OBG stays liquid long enough to get the panel in the press. It is possible to use traditional hide glue, but then heat needs to be applied once the panel is in the press to reactivate the glue, since it will have cooled before the veneer panel is applied. I find that more hassle than it's worth. You could also hammer veneer by adding once piece at a time, rather than taping all the pieces together first. That would be much more challenging. I don't know of anyone that does it that way any more, though that's how it used to be done.
