As a Proud Indian Guyanese and American 🇬🇾 🇺🇸, this is just outrageous to think that we would just hand over 2/3 of the country's landmass to Venezuela. The map of Guyana has been the same for over 100 years even since colonial times under the British rule, why should it be changed now? The primary motive for the county of Venezuela is they want to claim Guyana's nature resources as their own. Let me ask you this. Do you think the USA with just sit back on the sidelines and let their interest / investments be threatened by Venezuela. As history shows us, Americans don't just sit back and do nothing. I can asure you that especially being that we all share the same hampshire. The government of Venezuela should seek to provide an internal solution to help its own citizens with their domestic issues (economical, social, political) instead of threatening my country !

Agreed! Venezuela unilaterally decided in the 1960s to reject an agreement that had lasted a long time. And Guyana is supposed to accept this? Venezuela 🇻🇪 is a bad neighbor, it threatens to reign war on the continent. South America has been free of intra-continental wars since the end of the 19th Century.

Venezuela did accept that 1899 award and actually gained a sizeable amount of land which they celebrated.
@alejandro711ve

In 1814 British Empire bought from the Dutch a territory in South America with an approximate area of 36,000 km which they called British Guyana. For years, in 1814 border formed by the Essequibo River between the territory purchased from the Dutch and its neighbor Venezuela was respected, until the English began to discover deposits of gold and diamonds in Venezuelan lands and that awakened the ambition of the British who decided run the border to the west, surpassing the Essequibo River and entering Venezuelan lands. In this invasion British Empire added 160,000 km from Venezuela to the 36,000 km that they had purchased. At that time, Venezuela was weakened by the war of independence. During that time Venezuela sent its armies outside its borders to fight the Spanish Empire and helped half continent to achieve freedom. Subsequently, Venezuela had a civil war that weakened militarily and politically, it recognized that it could not confront the British Empire, so it began to make a diplomatic claim and requested help from United States to help Venezuela mediate with British. This is how in 1899 an arbitration award was established made up of two judges from the United States, two British judges and a Russian judge, deliberately excluding Venezuela at the request of the British. The judges of this award voted unanimously in favor of the British, giving them all of the Venezuelan territory that they had illegally invaded. Subsequently, many years later, the United States declassified documents, among which were found documents and letters written by one of the North American judges who participated in the Paris award of 1899, evidencing all the violations of international law and the illegality of the award, only I want to highlight few: 1- The arbitral tribunal, despite having stated that it had investigated and made sure of the “utis possidetis juris” principle, did not argue it. 2- The president of the arbitration tribunal, the Russian Friedrich Fromhold Martens, was interested in reaching a unanimous decision, without investigating and ascertaining the original border of Venezuela in 1814 as a starting point; on the contrary, he coerced the arbitrators by stating that If they did not vote for a border delimitation that had been devised by him, he would vote with the British arbitrators in favor of a line much more unfavorable for Venezuela. 3- A lack of motivation for the Court's decision was evident, contrary to the custom of international law, due to the need to conceal the procedure followed, which led to the establishment of a border line that could not be explained rationally or legally. 4- Alteration of the maps and documents that were presented to the court, which qualifies it as fraud, which vitiates the sentence. J. Gillis Wetter published documentary evidence, taken from the British Foreign Office's own archives, that certain maps and documents were forged by the British Government. 5- The existence of an Anglo-Russian agreement, which in exchange for a favorable attitude of the president of the court, the Russian Friedrich Fromhold Martens towards the British, began a policy of rapprochement and mutual concessions between Russia and the British Empire in Asia and Central Asia. When the illegality of the award became evident and after a diplomatic effort made by Venezuela, in 1966 the British, Venezuela and Guyana, agreed and signed the Geneva Agreement, recognizing that the 1899 award was made through a plot conceived against the interests of Venezuelans and Venezuela and Guyana must then reach a solution through peaceful means. Three months after the Geneva Agreement was signed, the British granted independence to Guyana, but the Geneva Agreement remains in force. This Geneva agreement in its Article 5, ordinal 2, establishes that as it is an area under claim, Venezuela and Guyana cannot dispose of or use this territory without reaching a prior agreement that favors both countries. Venezuela has been respectful of the agreement, but Guyana from the beginning has acted in flagrant violation of the Geneva Agreement, attempting to annex the territory stolen by the British from the Venezuelans as its own, when in 2015 Guyana granted oil companies concessions to extract oil. Venezuela has never been an enemy of Guyana, in fact, for many years Venezuela helped Guyana by providing oil and fuel at low cost and with friendly payment, in fact, Guyana currently owes Venezuela about US$135,000,000 and since 2015 has not continued with the payment of that debt. Venezuela does not wish to invade the legal territory of Guyana which corresponds to that originally purchased by the English from the Dutch in 1814 (36,000 km), what Venezuela seeks is for Guyana to agree to resolve the differences through the Geneva Agreement, to be returned to Venezuela the territory stolen by the British and the legal border between the territory of Venezuela and Guyana that constitutes the Essequibo River is recognized. Guyana is not acting in accordance with the law and wants to arbitrarily strip Venezuelans of a territory that has belonged to them since the creation of the Captaincy General of Venezuela in 1777. Venezuelans are also afraid of going to the International Court of Justice due to the high probability that it will be decided there according to the desires and conveniences of the countries that are world powers, as happened in 1899. An attempt has been made to show a distorted image of Venezuela's demands, ignoring history, and Guyana has shown itself to be a victim of this situation.

This land dispute is very similar to the Guatemalan-Belizean land dispute where initially the colonizers divided up the land but the now independent nations are still squabbling, even after independence. Personally, I see this dispute going on for another 100+ years with no resolution but the Venezuelan government need to focus on their own internal issues and leave Guyanese alone.

This is not at all the same as that belize-Guatemala dispute. First, you have to know the history of both countries. Spain was clear when it established the border limits between the Captaincy General of Venezuela in 1777 where the Essequibo River was the border between Venezuela and the Guianas. It was the British who broke those borders, taking advantage of the fact that Venezuela was in its independence process. When Venezuela became independent from Spain and the gran Colombia, had this cynical dispute over the British Empire, which called for arbitration without even giving Venezuela a place in the debate. If you want, investigate the 1899 arbitrary in paris. About Venezuela “having to take care of its country” and leave Guyana in peace, it is stupid, although Venezuela is in a crisis it does not mean that it does not have to defend its territory. Another thing, Venezuela does not want all of Guyana, only its territory up to the Essequibo River. Georgetown is from Guyana, and we Venezuelans don't even care.

Kalilah , it’s not true that the citizens of Guyana are enjoying great economic wealth. That is a joke the government public relations personnel are propagating. With all the oil being pumped, Guyanese are actually becoming poorer due to rising costs (housing, food, services, etcetera). Another example to bolster my point…with the billions of barrels of oil and even more exploration, the Guyanese dollar versus the US is still stagnant ($200-$1). Economics 101 would reveal some positive movements would have been seen if the economy was growing as the pseudo-forecasters are professing. For example, the dollar should have gained some strength with the injection of foreign reserves in the coffer of the Central Bank. I get the gist that your program might be edutainment, however, I must caution you that the threat from Venezuela is REAL; and should be taken SERIOUSLY!!!

That's an aggressive move by Venezuela. They have been claiming two-thirds of Guyana's land territory for ages and especially over its gold and other mineral resources. How can they now be extending that claim to coastal waters unless they are claiming the entire Guyana land mass. I hope CARICOM will stand up for Guyana as they did in the past and not desert them for Venezuela as they did with Trinidad for the oil trade concessions from Caracas. All those who turned back Guyanese from their ports of arrival are now queuing to get in on the action in Georgetown.

It has never been Guyana's land. It was always Venezuelan territory. Do some research on the topic, check some old maps of the area. The Brits just redrew the map without any justification, treaty,,,,, nothing. It would be like Canada suddenly publishing a map with N. Dakota included in Canada,,, without a war for it, without a treaty, without anything,,,, just on a greedy whim,,,,,,,,,,,,, and then expecting everyone to accept it as a fact. Venezuela has never given up their claim to the land. They are not making a new claim to the land or anything like that. This redrawing of the map was disputed by Venezuela from the time that it happened. The reason that it has now come to the forefront is because Exxon is basically going to start stealing Venezuela's resources.

The Guyanese territory is made up of 20 thousand square miles which are equivalent to 37 thousand square kilometers, solely and exclusively to the east of the Essequibo River "Therefore, the rest of the territory is not Guyana's, it is a usurped territory, it is a territory that invaded us England and that he left them as a disastrous inheritance when he granted independence to his colony of English Guiana." Essequibo Territory (ours) corresponds to a border dividing line with Guyana, highlighting that it was in 1814 that England purchased from Holland a geographical space and some establishments called: Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo. The territory of Essequibo has belonged to Venezuela since the Captaincy General of Venezuela in 1777.

In fact, there was already speculation about the wealth of Guyana in colonial times; you don't have to be very smart to imagine that the entire Guyanese massif is very rich. The problem arose when Exxon Mobile managed to buy the Guyanese government to be able to explore that territory, in violation of the good offices treaty they had had since 1966 with Venezuela regarding the search for a favorable solution for both countries. The British government accepted the dismissal of the 1899 arbitration because it was found to be fraudulent against Venezuela and was even signed by the then colonial representative and reiterated as an independent country in 1970 by the Guyanese Prime Minister, Forbes Burnham.

It is and always was Venezuelan territory. Guyana only takes advantage of the fact that Venezuela and the USA are on bad terms to use them as shields and since "the USA does not love to invade countries to take over their resources" 🤭😇 it supports the former British colony.

These Venezuelans have been taught falsified history. They were in the past Happy with the 1899 arbitral award which settled the boundaries. The have no legitimate reason for rejecting it now, and they know they will lose in a court of law. That's why they can't go to court to prove their case there. Venezuela a greedy bully.

This border dispute was caused by the British. The disputed region in question belongs to Venezuela long before the British colonized Guyana. What the British used to claim the region was that some people from their colony, Guyana migrated to the land. They used that to "claim" the land as "Guyanese" and when Guyana got their independence, they included that land in their submission to the UN as "Guyana's borders". They knew oil was there, so now the US is pushing Guyana to force the claim. The ICJ, like the ICC are compromised. They are never to be trusted and will ALWAY rule in favour of what the US wants them to. Otherwise, they will be punished by the US/NATO/Anglodom. The oil found in that region need very little refining. The deposit stretches under the Caribbean sea and even under Jamaica's waters. It is believed to be the largest deposits on the planet and the US wants access to it badly. We, in Jamaica, has access to it, and if we're going to capitalize on it, we have to be very careful who we turn to for help in extracting it. We know that any deal from the US will force us into unfair situations, like they've done to so many other countries. Whomever we decide to use, we must make sure that it is not captured and stolen from us.

If ownership is determined by which European power occupied a region first in a tangible way, then it could be argued that the Dutch are the rightful owners, which is a nonsense argument after the various wars and agreements. Venezuela never occupied the Essequibo territory that was eventually ceded to Britain by Spain and co. The logic used in the reasoning would mean that should the Cayman Islands or Turks and Caicos gain independence, Jamaica could construct an argument that it's theirs because both territories were at one stage administered from Jamaica and even used the same currency. No logic.
@winchesterlyon
@winchesterlyon 8 ай бұрын
@@AbengNewsMag Your argument is quite shortsighted. Venezuela fought for their independence like Haiti did. This wasn't a case like Guyana, where another European country invaded and took the country from another European country. They fought and liberated themselves from Spain. Guyana was a British colony and it was Britain that gave them their independence. Keep in mind also that before the British empire, it was the Dutch empire. At time the British carved off the portion of land from Venezuela, was after WWII them they lost their empire status to the US. Like all European/Anglo empires before, they are nothing but murderers and thieves. And so, they decided to steal that piece of land from Venezuela. It was populated with Venezuelans at the time, but that still doesn't give the British or by extension, Guyanese any claim of the land. Can you imagine if Haitians migrate to Jamaica and populate St Mary and then later Haiti decide to claim St Mary as their territory because the population there are Haitians? That would be ridiculous, right?

The Essequibo is an indivisible territory of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. Venezuela lost that area more than 120 years ago. If the nationalist Venezuelans dare to make a military incursion into Guyanese lands then their American, Canadian, British, Indian, Brazilian and Caribbean allies will be there to defend the sovereignty of Guyana and peace in South America. Essequibo belongs to Guyana. Not a blade of grass!

The Essequibo is from Venezuela, read its history, everything was arbitrarily when the General Capinania of Venezuela did not exist, Guyana was the British, it is a small territory, the real size of Guyana, you have to inherit what the British left you, no, the Essequibo, that is stealing, no. It belongs to them, if we enlist in the army to defend our sovereignty, we are going to do it. Don't look for sponsors, USA, Canada, United Kingdom, defend yourselves, just like your president shouts. I have nothing against the Guyanese but if they do not respect we will act

As a latin American who knows the history of the region since the Colonies, i can tell you Venezuela is right in his claims. How ridiculous it is that there is no documentary in English explaining the full history of El Esequibo and how brainwashed the ignorant people reduces this claim "to oil and gold" when this is in fact a historical claim that goes before the discovery of these resources.

Wow. If you are going to report on a story, I strongly suggest that you decide to actually research it, or tell the truth. I am not sure which is the problem here. That area was clearly recognized as Venezuelan long before the Brits tried to steal it by redrawing maps (basically that is what they did). Older maps clearly show that region as being part of Venezuela (FACT). Of course the ICJ will rule in favor of the US (Exxon is the company after the oil and paying bribes to the government of Guyana, surprising?). Venezuela will not give up their claim to the region and for good reason,,, It always was their territory. There is another point that should be understood. The US and "friends" want to overthrow the government of Venezuela and in the past began putting some form of special forces in that region for the purpose of entering Venezuela to murder people. IMO, if push comes to shove, Venezuela should push their military there and keep the thieves out.

@@genacygreene2548 It has never been Venezuela that wanted war. It has always been the US (and "friends") using puppet governments, like the one you have in Guyana, to make problems with Venezuela (FACT). Do you want to be used by the "collective west" to cause problems with your neighbor so they can rob them, and rob you while they are doing it? The people in Guyana are going to be worse off because of their deal with the devil. Do some research on countries that have been in similar situations with the US, UK, France,,,,,. BTW: Do you know what Venezuelans think about the people in Guyana that move here? It doesn't matter where the immigrants are from or which country they are in,,, the story is always the same.
