Georgetown was not always the capital of Guyana. In this seventh episode of the series GUYANA, the News Room’s Neil Marks retraces the beginning of the Dutch occupation of Demarara almost 300 years ago and went to find the island that served as the administrative capital….

My great-uncle, Ivan Dewar, was a mechanic in the British Royal Air Force. My father was named after him. The history of how Caribbean Countries had contributed to the world must be shared.

Omg that island is behind my childhood neighborhood in the Demerara river, my siblings and I went to school with children from the powers family. So cool growing up never knew people would be on the island we would just always see it crossing to family on the west bank. Wowwww such awesome history, didn't know it was Guyana's first Capitol, bringing back a lot of nostalgia too of the river ❤️. Hi Powers!

Great history of Georgetown. Hope that island is put on the list of historical landmarks. The family living there is awesome in collecting the Artifacts and preserving!

This should be taught in history classes before Christopher Columbus discovering the new world. I always wonder why the Dutch was in Guyana. It actually was Dutch Guyana before British Guyana.

As informative as the video is, that "unsure how ownership of the land came about" comment and "taking a big risk" joke don't sit right with me. I hope and pray nothing nefarious is afoot.

Well to go claim a land where people have been occupying for decades will be quite a court show down. Don't think any investor want that battle. The family has too much history and their occupation there for decade's can be proven. No investor can come in and prove it doesn't belong to them. So, the fight would be costly and more than likely un fruitful. And look at it this way it would be a mini war if any family think they'll come take over what these people have called home.
