Venezuela has also threatened to invade Curacao and possibly Bonaire and Aruba as well. Not surprising, all islands (and especially Curacao) are rich in oil. In response the Dutch and US militaries withdrew from the islands so as to "not increase international tensions". Eventually Venezuela backed down, maybe because they weren't confident they could pull off an amphibious assault across that distance. "Seizing" ships should be called what it is: stealing ships.

Sounds like it’s time for NATO countries to get involved and stop Venezuela. Just because the US aren’t present on the islands anymore doesn’t mean they couldn’t get there quickly.

It'd be a Falklands 2.0 (at least for the US islands). South American dictatorship needing a public opinion boost wanting to annex foreign territory, which belongs to a country not known for backing down / bending over. Great summary. Regarding the two submarines, to safely operate older subs a Navy must maintain periodic inspections and surveys to ensure material condition is safe to dive the ship. The fact that these hulls have been inactive for years might mean inspections have lapsed. Once this happens it is near impossible to re-establish confidence in the pressure hull and attached fittings/systems.

It seems the reason for Venezuela to be interested is oil, but not that Venezuela wants it. More that they don't want Guyana and foreign interests having it, as that would devalue the Venezuelan oil. Although that isn't worth much as is, their economy is almost entierly reliant on it and the country would collapse further (somehow) if it tanked. The invasion is unlikely to work. The direct land route is through dense jungle and swamp, not really travesable by any substantial force. Going through Brazil is possible but will haul them into the conflict, if the Venezuela vs Guyana looked one sided, then Brazil vs Venezuela is even more so (to Brazil). As the video shows, Venezuela have some navy, and may be able to land troops but sustaining an invasion is an entierly different matter.

Venezuelan oil is not devalued by the presence of Guyana’s oil. Oil is an international market with global competition, nevermind significant competition from other countries close by in South America like Brazil. This is a pure attempt to steal Guyana’s oil, in an attempt to flex Venezuela’s muscles, to create a common goal that Maduro can attempt to rally his starving nation around, and pose Venezuela as a strong nation in an attempt to hide the beleaguered reality
@tobiasrietveld3819
@tobiasrietveld3819 Жыл бұрын
No they DO want the oil and in particular the functioning production facilities, infrastructure and skilled labor. Venezuela sits atop massive oil reserves themselves but these are woefully managed and they lack the means to meaningfully raise their current production capacity. PDVSA is just run by cronies that fleece it for all its worth. Maintentance, training staff etc is all neglected, millions Venzuelans with skills and the means will have already fled the country and the education systems have collapsed. On top of that no foreign oil company is stupid enough to get involved when their investments can (and will) be nationalized on the drop of a hat.

The chances that Venezuela undertakes any military operations are pretty small. Public opinion across most of Latin American is against the idea and it's easy to imagine a very powerful coalition coming together to stop it. So this is likely just a domestic political ploy by Maduro to shift the focus to foreign affairs and foreign threats to distract from all the bad things going on in Venezuela itself.

The US could end the Venezuelan Naval threat in an afternoon. There are so many air assets in the gulf region it is ridiculous. They could hit even their smallest boats from altitudes that would make it impossible for them to even respond to. The issue is if the US will pledge to defend Guiana from any aggression. As an American, I hope we do. I am tired of sitting back and watching others struggle when we can end a conflict like this so quickly. If so, some strikes that took out the Venezuelan Navy and hit other key military targets, to make sure Maduro didn't do anything else, would weaken Maduro's hold enough that the Venezuelan people would be able to oust him and take back their nation. If they got rid of him and held free open elections then almost all of the sanctions crippling their economy would be lifted. The world would be a better place economically with a free Venezuela and Guyana pumping out oil and taking up the slack that Russia is never going to be able to fulfil again.

I think a lot of people worrying about an invasion fail to realize just how remote and rugged the Essequibo region is. A few indigenous villages and scattered small scale mining towns with no more than a few hundred people each. Realistically the only way to occupy the area is with a navy and small boats supported by helicopters. The vulnerability of Venezuela's navy to counterattack is probably why they've never tried anything, even going all the way back to their dispute with the British Empire.

They don't intend to occupy the land. They intend to steal offshore oil rigs. Guyana is an old British colony and as a Brit I feel a sense of duty to protect our old colonies. I think it's the least we could do following the centuries of exploitation of their land and people. I am ashamed that the British government hasn't been more vocal in their condemnation of Venezuela's illegal claims. It seems our government is more concered with internal party politics than world security. Guyana is likely to be a key strategic ally and will help end our reliance on Middle Eastern Oil. Freeing us from the influence of Islam and allowing the UK to fully back Israel in their war on terror. As ever the bigger picture is lost on self centered politicians who care only about lining their own pockets and maintaining their grip on power instead of the long term strategic future of the country. Too many missed opportunities!

9:39 That looks to be in Curaçao. The Dutch have a marine base there, they could possibly also get involved. There have been dust-ups with Venezuela about the Dutch Caribbean, which at the time resulted in some NATO exercises in Curaçao territorial waters, with a US carrier, which is close enough that it would have been visible with the naked eye from the Venezuelan coast. @@Kenny-yl9pc I cannot personally confirm this information, but it is rumored that Perun is an employee of the Australian MOD who focuses on defense economics and materials acquisitions, and has used this experience and his platform to inform the general public with an insight that is not readily available from traditional media sources. I have a limited military-government agency background, and have noted his vocabulary, cadence and other subtle references strongly suggest that he has worked/continues to work for either a government department or a private sector entity with government contracts. The focus and detail of his presentations has also garnered the intermittent participation of a number of relatively high-profile figures (Gen. Ben Hodges among them), which I think would be far less likely for "a dude making KZbin videos from home". I mean, anything's possible in a world where an insurance salesman can review publicly available materials and create a fictional account of a rogue SSBN with enough technically accurate detail that the FBI would like to see a complete list of references... I merely meant to comment that Perun gave a very good recent summary of the various economic and political pressures that may compel Maduro to pursue some form of military operation against his neighbor with what appears to be limited maritime resources that are a far cry from the armada label in the video title. I was not attempting to make any comparison between HI Sutton and Perun in terms of knowledge base, experience or the quality of their analysis. While doing your own research is always sound advice, there are some topics and areas that may present a challenge to the public to even know where to begin, and HI Sutton and Perun both provide a framework for a more informed discourse about timely events.

The broader question is, why is Venezuela making these threats now just as Russia is playing in Ukraine and Iran stirring things up in the Middle East? Is this just opportunistic or are they coordinating with their partners in the China-Russia-Iran axis? If this is coordinated, does it imply anything for Taiwan?
@phoenix211245
@phoenix211245 Жыл бұрын
Possibly, however, China is highly unlikely to get involved imho. They already have enough financial issues, and Taiwan is a vital strategic resource to Nato, unlike Ukraine. And since over half of its food and fuel reserves are imported, via sea lanes controlled by unfriendly powers, and Russia, and it was already proven that the supply of both from Russia can be cut at any time by a recent strike which has practically severed the entirety of the rail capacity between the two for at least a month..... Doubt China is going to rock the boat too much, they are more business oriented unlike the others you mentioned.

This is purely a matter of domestic politics, specifically the 2024 presidential election. As dictatorial as Maduro is (María Corina Machado, the leading opposition candidate, has been disqualified by Maduro's government on blatantly false charges), his popularity is low enough (8% to Machado's 73%) that if the election were tomorrow he would have to shed any remaining veneer of legitimacy to remain in power. France, Netherlands, and the UK all have capable navies and could just form a joint task force of frigates, destroyers, subs, and at least one carrier, that sails down there and bullies the Venezuelan navy into staying in port. The US navy would not have to spend a single minute away from its highest priority country to protect (Israel), but of course the US already wants to take Venezuela down a peg, and Exxon might "rent" the US navy as muscle, just like they rent US politicians. 😅 The point is, if Venezuela's navy did attack, the response would be less like a war and more like "assisted suicide".

What if Brazil saw it as an opportunity to take control of Guyana's deep water port and, so ensure supply to northern Brazil? They could go in to 'help' Guyana 'defend' against Venezuela and end up taking over...

It is also possible that India could get involved if requested since a large portion of the population are ethnic Indians that settled there many years ago. It is a large religious Hindu group as well. If they were to ask India for military arms and training support for example, with potential resource contracts in return, India could have a vested interest in protecting them. They might even offer naval basing for Indian military vessels, giving India some reach into the Atlantic and implied security protection in return.

Thanks for the video. I am wondering about the rivers though. iirc they are quite flat and include a number of rapids, search for the rivers name on youtube and all the videos are about speeds boats going down or up the rapids. Doesnt lend itself to bringing anything better than men and their personal equipment. What do you think?

@@ReZel80657 naval mines yes. but anti-tank mines with tilt-rod or magnetic influence fuzes would do the trick in shallow waters against river boats just fine. And yes, many AT mines are designed to be waterproof so they can be planted in rivers, usually to prevent crossings rather than boats.

Guyana needs to take up credit on its natural resources and invest in a multi stage armament, starting with scandinavian missile boats with their +300 km ASM and with the newest bayraktar jet and turboprop drones, for immediate defence capabilities. Next should be the build up of a well trained militia army, much like the swiss military, with attached equipment (heavy combat systems such as tanks, SPGs, fighter jets and heavier patrol boats with AA, ASM VLS and anti sub capabilities.

@@totalNERD-eo7wx sure, if it is only Guyana they can't do anything and if that's the case I belive Venezuela could even go directly by air and take both of Guyanas airfields while the ships sail directly into Georgetown harbors and the infantry would go by river, but it is unlikely that nobody would help, the U.S. has F-22 in Puerto Rico so even if Brazil stays neutral Guyana would receive some help, there is also talks of a coalition of countries from South America that could go, this year's UNITAS where in Colombia, Southcom could assemble a fleet of 20 ships if they ask

Well, all Guyana needs to do then, is defend certain key points. Obviously easier said than done, but still. Grunts on foot are always required to enforce any territorial claims in dispute, and so as long as Guyana can at least equip and train a half-decent infantry, it should be able to fight back hard enough to make a Venezuelan invasion too costly to attempt. If necessary, a stay behind force could headquarter itself deep in the forest, and jungle is nigh impossible to wrest away from an embedded, prepared resistance, if all else fails.
