20 years ago, when I was a student/early in career and I was using regularly the trains to go to work/university, trenitalia was a nightmare, both for the trains and the organization (delays, super old trains, not clean at all, etc). I then moved abroad so I stopped using the italian trains. Few weeks back, I had a trip to Italy and I was nicely surprised to see that the situation improved A LOT. To be honest I had no complains at all, and all journeys by train have been great! Thumbs up to Italy!

You have to buy tickets for Frecciarossa trains beforehand, you can't just board them and sit wherever. The earlier you buy them, the less they cost. So yes, seat reservation is required. You can then choose to either let the system assign a seat for you automatically within the selected class, or pay 2€ extra to select the seat you like.

I'm not so sure flying would take 4 hours or less....first of all you have to get from the city center from the airport to and from. Then there is the security lines...also you have to arrive at least 30 minutes early for your flight. I think the train is faster, city center to city center.

@ringo7561 based on some calculations, it is possible to do it in 3 hours 15 minutes. And what about business people living in Venice needing to attend a full day of meetings in Rome or vice versa. That means being in Rome at 9am. And there is no train at 4.30am. But there are 6am flights

Imagine using a plane in such a distance, EU in the future might ban those short distance flights or might been killed by more frequent trains, as proven with Alitalia that been suffered frequent losses since many passengers switched into HSR before it was dissolved in 2021 (this is also combined with bad network planning and competition with Ryanair aka the hard landing airline) for ITA but even then
@antoniovitellaro
@antoniovitellaro 6 ай бұрын
Assuming you have to travel between venice (where the closest not pedestrian only area is right next to the station) to the trevi fountain in rome (roughly the city centre) it takes exactly the same. 30 min to venice airport, 1h30 to wait for the flight, 1h (probably even 1h15) flight, 45 min by Leonardo express and subway. And that's if it all goes to plan....for a tourist the train is always going to be faster, cheaper, more practical and more relaxing, even if only half of the itinerary is on an actual high speed line. For an office worker flying might be marginally quicker, expecially if they have to get to areas of rome, such as the eur area, closer to the airport.

The most incredible part of the italian HSR is the engineering challenge in relation to the orography. Italy is a dense populated country, long and narrow in shape with many high mountains, so two lines should carry a lot of trains (local passengers, HSR users and goods) using very long tunnels and high bridges. Those lines are thus heavily used over the whole day. Indeed the train frequency is another noticeable aspect of the HSR service. In the north-south axe, there's one HS train every 15 minutes, like some metro service in huge metropolitan areas. That's sometimes the reason behind some occasional chain dalays that can easily reach 2 or more hours on the entire timetable. IN general my most important aspects as traveller are the realiability of the service, the price, the quietness. Trenitalia AV is not cheap at all, unless you book some week in advance. Prices are designed to be competitive with airlines, not to be related to the company costs. The realiability is sometimes bad (5-10%) due the high congestion of the main lines. Sadly is not infrequent to find noisly passengers too.

I haven't travelled with Trenitalia yet, I have travelled with Italo and I liked it a lot. What I missed was a cafeteria service on board. It was a journey that I imagine was from Rome or Naples to Venice, but I went up in Florence to Santa Lucia and yes, I liked the scenery a lot and the service was good. The vending machines are fine, but the offer was rather fair and they didn't have many products. However, I like the idea that there is competition between Trenitalia and Italo and that is why I like that in my country there is Renfe, Trenitalia and also SNCF and it will make travelling by train something normal and everyday compared to the plane and it will improve competition and the main beneficiary will be the customer.

He was wrong when he said, as a classic Englishman jealous of Italian engineering and technological superiority, that the Ansaldo group only put the sticker on the finished train, alluding that they built it not in Italy...Hitachi Italy was born exclusively for the Italian capabilities in making trains , in Tuscany they are built and delivered immediately, YOU know the PENDOLINO, even the AVANTI GROUP in the UK still uses them: an Italian technology from 40 years ago. Those who bend in curves so to speak. Pendolino in the world was synonymous, until 10 years ago, with high-speed trains. Pendolino is an Italian name but, for example, in Australia, it is an example, LIKE PAPARAZZI...you English, you hate Italy so much because, feel inferior, and the ferocity of your propaganda, to destroy the image of the soldiers in WW2, fortunately the truth is coming out, when they lost the battles, the British said, often in agreement with former Nazis, that it was the Germans who beat you. Help yourself even from Hollywood you have cowardly destroyed thousands of dead Italians who fought, increasing the myth of Rommel. In Africa, the Italians without water and ammunition caused thousands of casualties to an army with 75mm, Italy had 35mm tanks that served as reminders to the sherman

this train is 400km/h or 300? Does this train feel smooth when riding? Still feel shaken

300. The ride is smooth on high speed rail, and less smooth on standard rail. By less smooth I mean you can still have a glass of water on the table.

The train is capable of 400km/h max by design and of 360km/h cruise speed, but only 300kmh are allowed on Italian high speed lines.
