Copperhead venom is mild compared to cottonmouths and rattlesnakes.

True. If I'm not mistaken, I think Copperheads are the least venomous of the viper family.

If you go outside at night, don't do it barefooted and without a flashlight, ESPECIALLY during cicada season. You're asking for trouble. People think that close cropped and well maintained lawns offer some modicum of "protection" assuming that snakes wouldn't generally be at such places, and if they were they would be readily visible in even minimal moonlight. That said, you could be on a golf course and it's the same thing. Trust me when I say this is no old wives' tale or urban rumor. When cicadas leave the ground, they head for large trees, which is why you see cicada molts on trees. Copperheads "know" this, and they will sit waiting to ambush cicadas on warm summer nights...at times night after night. And it's not going to be just one that practices such behavior. If you're in the deep south, you need to take what I'm saying here to heart, because it's not some wives tale or urban legend, nor is it just general bull$hittery. You've been warned....
