Ventricular septal defect, or VSD, refers to an OPENING in the interventricular septum that separates the two ventricles of the heart.
In normal circulation, oxygen-poor blood from the body returns to the RIGHT side of the heart where it is pumped into the pulmonary artery and to the lungs. After being oxygenated, oxygen-rich blood from the lungs returns to the LEFT side of the heart to be pumped into the aorta and out to the body.
A VSD allows ABnormal blood flow between the two ventricles. The NET flow of blood, called a SHUNT, is usually from LEFT to RIGHT due to significantly HIGHER blood pressure in the LEFT side of the heart. This is because the left side has to pump blood all over the body while the right side only needs to send it to the lungs. If the defect is small, the shunt is negligible and does not result in any symptoms. A large defect, on the other hand, may OVERLOAD the right side of the heart, causing it to FAIL. Heart failure symptoms usually appear during the first few weeks of life and include: fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty feeding and poor growth.
Without treatment, other complications may also occur. As the right ventricle continuously pumps MORE blood to the lungs, the entire pulmonary vasculature may be overloaded and pulmonary HYPERtension may result. To OVERCOME the high pressure in the lungs, the right ventricle has to generate even HIGHER pressure, which eventually becomes GREATER than that of the LEFT ventricle. This REVERSES the direction of the shunt, causing oxygen-POOR blood to flow from RIGHT to LEFT and be sent to all tissues of the body. The resulting oxygen DEPRIVATION may be seen as a BLUISH skin color, known as CYANOSIS.
A VSD can happen alone or in combination with other congenital defects in conditions such as Down syndrome, or tetralogy of Fallot. The cause is unknown but likely to involve both genetic and environmental factors.
The turbulence of abnormal blood flow in VSD produces heart murmurs, which can be heard using a stethoscope. Diagnosis is confirmed by echocardiography.
VSD is the most common congenital heart defect in infants, but the defect is small in most cases. Small defects usually close on their own in early childhood and no treatment is needed. Large defects that produce symptoms usually require surgical closure in the first year of life.

My son is currently 7 months now, he has a very large VSD. When he was 2 months he had to have a pulmonary artery band placed so he could breathe and grow properly. Tomorrow he will be having a cardiac catheter procedure to check his pressures and for the surgeon to know his plan for closing his VSD next month. Ive reframed from looking at videos or things that may scare me more for my son’s health. But this video was so clear and detailed thank you for the information

@@anilsharma-yy3dk I had it when I was born and after they discovered it I was kept under doctor supervision just to monitor it. They sent me home after about 2 weeks saying that I should just come back every month for checkups as I wasn't having any too serious complications. When I was around 8/9 I began to have heart murmurs and a lot of extreme chest pain so my mom brought me into the doctor and they said I would be scheduled in for open heart surgery. 2 days before my surgery I went in for an ultrasound to make sure that eveeything was ok for the surgery and it had closed by itself, which is why I was getting the murmurs and chest pain. I'm 15 now and go in for a check up every 3 years to make sure everything is ok and so far I've been good but I just have to stay active to keep my heart going I hope your baby is doing ok and it's not too serious x

I had this when i was born (doctors detected it while i was still a fetus, from what i was told). It ended up closing when i was young i believe, so i luckily had no issues from it, didn’t need any surgery but the surgery for it was supposed to happen while i was an infant.

At 33 I still have mine. when I was new born. doctors say it will close in time. but mine still not closing. I am not having any symptoms though. been a triatlon runner ...and boxer for years since a kid.

14 and have Restrictive VSD. Not sure what any of this means but I'm not an athlete or anything so I should be fine. Doctors really aren't worried about me so I'm not either. U people should go through a test called echocardiography ... this test will tell u about whether your heart is effected by this hole or not ....this disease is mostly asymptomatic ...once the symptoms appear u will most probably die in a year or may be in months or few days

Why bother doing those procedures and risk having side effects by those procedures. if we are already feeling perfectly healthy and fine now. My doctor already told me my symptom would be heart failure. no doctor can do anyrhing about that. it will just happen lol.

I know your comment is 5 months old but in case u didnt get the answer in the meantime, I’ll explain. It is said in the video, due to the flow of the blood from LEFT to RIGHT ventricle, right ventricle pumps more blood to the lungs, resulting in lungs overloaded with blood, which causes pulmonary hypertension and because behind pulmonary valve is higher pressure, right ventricle must increase the effort of pumping the blood against higher pressure, resulting in hypertrophy and higher pressure in the right ventricle, which is then higher than in the left ventricle. I hope this helps a little :).

Hi, Sir! I just saw your video today because I found out that my baby has Congenital heart disease, a ventricular septal defect perimembranous. She's 9 months old and doesn't have any symptoms as she looks normal, eats normally, and gains weight. Her VSD measures 0.34-0.45cm. Can it be closed without medication? Hi! I have VSD. Basically, it can close as your baby is growing. If it keeps growing, your baby may need open heart surgery to fix it. But, going to regular check ups can help to see your baby's progress!

Consult with multiple drs, do not go into surgery after having suggestion of one dr. I lost my Daughter (1 year and 2 month) after 1 day of open heart surgery due to drs negligence. Consult as many drs as soncan and analyze your baby health by your own. My daughter was not ready for open heart surgery, but dr did the surgery and I lost the most beautiful flower of my life.
