Suck it up? Its not like he has a choice. If I owned that company I'd have a tech meet him somewhere. He's going to hit some rallies and jamborees and bad mouth the hell out of it. One needs to wonder just how much damage was done to the fuel pump when he ran it on water and rat urine. As far as I'm concerned I wouldn't have put it in as its just another problem waiting to happen. Its like power swaybar disconnects. More layers of BS. But then again I'm in Baja Sur slowly making my way north and heaters aren't an issue. I can't begin to tell you how many people I've pulled out of the bush because of a MAS sensor, burned up electrical systems, fried automatics, in tank fuel pumps the list is endless. Built not bought.

T salinger1026 What I meant by suck it up is suck up sleeping in the cold weather until he gets the issue resolved, if ever. Sounds like he’s working to get things resolved, no need to flame a company just yet until they totally screw him over. Then, yeah, flame the hell out of them. I agree, the less technical and mechanical things to fail, the better. And, of course, building is always the better way to go. That’s what I’ve done to the extent of my abilities. 👍🏻

My wife gifted me an electric blanket for Christmas and that has been a blessing on those super cold nights of camping. I just use it to pre-warm my sleeping bag, turn it off and then back on in the morning as I warm up the Jeep. Even if I sleep outside in my tent cot I do the same. Another thing I do is heat up a 32oz Pathfinder (Dave Canterbury) bottle of water and slip it into my sleeping bag before crawling into it. I enjoyed your hike into the canyon with the cat walk...kind of reminded me of a Jurassic Park episode with them walking within a pteridactyl (sp?) cage. I love and appreciate your sense of adventure. As I've gotten older, now in my 70's, I've lost that zest for adventure by exploration, however, I enjoy watching you in your episodes.

I have a Chinese gas/ diesel heter it's not webasto but works the same way. I have a problem one time that i took 2 days to figure out and the problem was the battery! If the power is under 10volts spark plug don't start. So try to start the heter with the jeep running it's worth to try in my case after the flame on the heter starts i turn the truck off and the heter keep going. Sorry about my writing English is not my first language ✌✌ love you channel 👍👍👍👍👍👍

The igniter they get really dirty on the heaters, they can be removed and cleaned... had one in my truck for over ten years... the igniter is kind of like a spark plug.... google it...

I agree, I have the diesel version of the heater and sure enough, the exact same problem Chris has, and it was the glow plug to ignite the fuel. Now fixed, I'm enjoying the heat from it now watching this video.

Chris, if it is the glow plug and you decide to replace it yourself. Don't touch the element, any contamination on it will cause a hot spot and cause it to burnout faster. I've changed them on my house furnace, just one screw an an electric plug on the wires.

@@DirtShy the one in my international always gers sooted up. I found if you run it on a higher heat setting it works better. I think the problem is, they are basically designed for sail boats of a larger size. In such a small area, it will cook you out therefore you tend to turn it down which causes it to soot up due to low burn temps. I was also told by the mechanic you need to run it once a month in the summer as well

Welcome to AZ. Love your videos! I’m currently going thru a transplant for my cancer and haven’t been able to go out exploring in my Jeep for The last year. I miss being out in my Jeep exploring. So, your explorations are a welcome distraction. If you get a chance to head to southern AZ check out Dragoon Mountains - Cochise Stronghold area. Very cool rock formations and has an eerie feel about it, but one of my favorite places to explore.

I came in somewhere in the middle a couple months ago, found the beginning of your three year journey, and have watched every episode to date. I’m a retired Firefighter/fellow Overlander, and Jeep owner. I’ve been over-landing for about 30 years now, though only a weekend (or week) at a time during warm weather. Well you're real close to my domicile lol about 70 miles lol. You were real close to where i used to work in eastern arizona at morenci. Huge copper mine there. In the Trucking industry we call those heaters "Bunk Heaters" lots of truck dealers is. Freightliner, Kenworth, Internatioal as well as many truck stops services those heaters. i had one in my Tractor trailer truck that ran for years with no issues. i think once you get it a quick service you should be back. Awesome video, Chris! I really enjoyed the "cat walk" hike into the New Mexico canyon. When I was stationed in Phoenix and in Gila Bend I did a lot of dispersed camping throughout the state of Arizona, backpacking, car camping and motorcycle camping. I'm entertaining the idea of moving back there now that I am retired. If you get the chance Hwy 89 from Prescott up to Flagstaff is an incredibly beautiful ride taking you through Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona and other interesting small towns. Up on the Mogollon Rim near Payson are some amazing hiking trails and you might run into a mountain lion that surprised me while I was answering nature's call. I love your spirit of adventure and your attitude about life in general. Safe travels.

You made the right decision in the El Malpais. There are times when the mud is completely impassable. Even a tracked vehicle would have trouble. The Catwalk Recreation Area flooded last spring during the run-off and was closed for a time. I'm guessing that is when the damage occurred.

Damn Chris, your heater was recently installed and is practically new and it’s not working. I remember seeing how happy and excited you were when drove out of OK4x4. You even said it was a game changer for you. I hope it’s an easy fix. With all of that aside, I’ve never been to the dessert and I have to say that going there during winter seems like something nice to experience considering it’s not blistering hot. I imagine it gets very cold at night but you can’t beat the weather during the day. It also appears to be very peaceful and picturesque there. As always your videos are very entertaining and I envy your very free lifestyle. It’s definitely not for everyone but I’d love to do it! Be safe and I look forward to seeing the next one! Cheers!

For heat on my rig, i went with a unit like the Dickerson Marine unit. Very simple and reliable... Only thing different on my unit is I had to put in a thermostat propane valve, that way unit regulates the temperature and does not continue to just run...

Hi Chris tip on opening tight bottle lids. Flip the bottle over and give the bottom of the jar a nice firm hit with the palm of your hand. That should break the seal on the bottle and let you open it more easily. Learned that from a restaurant waiter opening new ketchup bottles.

Jar lid stuck ? Take a spoon and pry up on the edge of the lid until you hear the vacuum release . Lid will spin off easily. Love your vids.

Pro tip for opening jars. Stick something under the lip and lift gently, it’ll break the vacuum seal and make the lid easy to twist off 😀

Always have an elastic band to open a stuck jar lid. Wrap it around the lid and use it to grip. Always works!

I drive a big truck that has one of those hearers in it, it seems to go through a cleaning cycle or something. But if you just keep turning it off and back on it will start. Also, it seems to like running at higher temps. If you turn the temp down, it seems to flame out more

Hi Chris, not sure, whether the issue with your Webasto heater still exists. I am from Germany and a friend has installed the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC "Camping" version in his Jeep as well. If you do have the standard version, so not the "camping" version of the Air Top 2000 STC, the heater is not working properly at higher altitudes. Only the "camping" version has an integrated altitude sensor and is automatically reducing the ammount of fuel at higher altitudes, which is pumped into the combustion chamber. Otherwise there is too much fuel and too less oxygen present and the combustion parameters are out of the allowed range. The "camping" version can be used for altitudes up to 2200m (~ 7200 ft).

Hmm wish I knew how the igniter worked. Obviously, it's not igniting the fuel. Of course, the fuel pressure might be off too. Need to do some testing. I just got a cheap chinese version. I should take that apart and see how it works. Mine runs on diesel though. Darn, wish id been there with the muddy road. I'd back you up for recovery. It would be fun. ;)

I live at the base of the superstition mountains your in my neck of the woods :) although this weekend I'm out in the desert camping BLM land quartzsite ,,,, I use the mr buddy heater to keep me toasty warm in the back of my shell inclosed pickup truck all carpet top bottom side to side 6 inch memory foam mattress on a solid metal cott with wood slates with plenty of space for storage bids underneath...... love your jeep set up although I Yearn for the day you replace your overland vehicle !!!

Gila is an Apache word meaning awesome wild country. Ok, I made that up. But it really is wild and it truly is awesome. One of my favorite places anywhere. I’ve camped there and haven’t seen another person for a couple of days. Great video.

I have a propex gas heater in my teardrop. Since it's a gas heater it doesn't build up carbon, it is kinda finicky with the pressure at different altitudes though. By the end of the day I would suspect the ignition element - I used to have a Webasto heater in my first car some 35 years ago and the main issue was the ignitor (this was a diesel version salvaged from a totaled semi truck and the only thing that kept it from working was the soot covering the glow plug). I don't know how the modern versions work, but chances are there is a solid glow rod of sorts in there that needs either a good scraping or a replacement.

Can't have nothing! Heater issue sucks but you went years without one so until it's repaired and functioning as it's supposed to, keep on keeping on. Hopefully in a week or two you will have made your way out of the desert anyhow. Drive on, brother, and thank you for bringing us along for the ride. Oh. At 17 minutes, holding your coffee press and pouring the hot water in while holding the press from the bottom. Please be careful as even a slight bump could cause you to spill that really hot looking water on ur hand. No burn is good but burns to the hand are worse. Just looking out for you, sir. Would hate to see you hurt.

A. That catwalk trail looks like a blast and its within reach of my home in Western CO. ( Still willing to watch over that Scottle for you). B. I hope you learned your lesson(said in jest) about relying too heavily upon equipment. Even in my house I keep extra layers on my bed....you can move up and down in the stack according to conditions. The heater is a cool idea and I hope that you get the kinks worked out. C. Experience........it's what you obtain , right after it could've been useful!
