Need more tutorials like this. Been tying for 40 years, and it pisses me off that flyfishermen want to make things so complicated. Cant tell you how many materials Ive pissed money away on for a cool fly to tie to never use it on the water. There are a million fly variations with cool names, but at the end of the day, you have basically 5 -7 basic patterns. Creativity of the tier is a thing, but as you said, the fish dont care. Kudos to your tutorial.

Amen to that!!! I just want to catch a fish!!! LOL!! And I figure I'll start with the "Dollar Store DIY" tying to start low budget. So, if I may ask, is there one of the mentioned brands of thread that has the most or best variety of threads that cover most general (nothing too fancy/exotic) tying tasks? I ask for the sake of the KISS rule to avoid problems with all these different companies having their own versions of the Den. and Aught sizes (Really dumb on their part). I'd also like to stick with one brand as there's not much available locally, so I'll be ordering online. Thanks in advance!!

I won't overthink it. I've got the small diameter for tiny and dry but really my main supply came from Wal Mart and Hobby Lobby which has every single colour in metallic as well...have fun

This is the single best instructional video series I've ever seen. From the module-based approach, to the time for each, topic selection, graphic design, and video combination... It's perfect! You guys did your homework. It is both a Masterclass on fly tying, and a masterclass on how to make an instructional video. Bravo!.

Hi Alex! Man I'm really enjoying these beginner videos! A lot of great information and lots of questions of mine answered. I'm John. I'm a 61 year old dude in a wheelchair as I was born with spina bifida. I love to fish and have been fishing for years but only last year started tying. Next month I'll be getting a new wheelchair that actually can go out on soft dirt and sand! Man I can't wait to get our there in it. I prefer saltwater but I've been getting more and more interested in more freshwater fishing. So I'm learning both. I even found a free class taught out here in California by my home. But here's my hard question. I'm on a fixed income. So expensive fly fishing rods are out of my grasp. I also can't get into the water to fish. Plus the way I've seen people fly fish, we'll all that line would get tangled up in my wheels. So I use spinning gear to fish my flies. So do you know anyone who does that and can I get some feedback on how to successfully catch fish using flies on spinning rods and reels? Any advice or feedback will be most appreciated! Thanks! John

Thank you. This is a very helpful video. For me, it eradicated some mysteries about thread. BTW, I offer an exception to your opening statement. The original Sawyer pheasant tail nymph does not use thread. I used them the last time that I went fishing and the trout liked them. I don't have any flies without hooks, though! Thanks, again, keep the excellent videos coming.

To be honest, I am not super familiar with cotton thread. Just try tying up a few with the thread, if it works… sweet! If not… no biggie and you can pick up a couple spools. 😎🤙🏽 We’re all about using what you got.

To add to the confusion… nylon and polyester have different densities, and since denier is based on weight - same denier of polyester and nylon will result in different ought 😅

Hey team, came here to comment a business Idea. I've found that i'm buying a TON of fly tying material for various different types of flies. It seems fly tying can be categorized into types. Streamers (classic Materials), Streamers (modern materials), Soft hackles, Perdigones, classic nymphs (natural materials), modern nymphs (modern materials), Dries (modern) Classic dries (natural materials) Protein flies (eggs, worms, boobies, blobs, mops, etc) and....I cannot think of any others right now, but I'm sure there are some MY QUESTION THOUGH is will you create some kits for each of these categories? Beginner - 3-5 patterns, intermediate 5-10 patterns, and advanced 10-15 patterns. Then price them accordingly. Thoughts? I was just looking around my office and even though I have literally hundreds of materials, I only have 1 bags of partridge for soft hackles. I can make them brown, or natural. I thought of you nerds when I said to myself, good hell someone should create a kit that one could just buy which would include most everything a nerd needs to tie up a bunch of patterns for a specific genre of flies. love ya faces!

They use both the Aught and Denier systems on their spools. So same principles apply. Bigger denier, thicker thread. Smaller denier, thinner thread. Bigger aught, thinner thread. Smaller aught, thicker thread.
