It's weird how Venus' tennis IQ seemed to get worse the longer she played for. She had all the tools to play a fairly complete game, yet she chose to play one way most of the time even when it wasn't working out. Even considering her illness, she probably could have won a few more slams with some adjustments. Oh well, still a huge legend.
@justincartwright252 Жыл бұрын
@@EmilieSagae 100%. Her dad always said she needed to attack the net more. I bet she would have won even more matches with Serena had she played more aggressive and moved in more - but coming in against Serena's power isn't easy. Venus at her peak was SOMETHING ELSE.
@stefan33uk9 ай бұрын
@@EmilieSagaein 2000 and 2001 she could rally endlessly if she wanted. She then lost a bit of speed and patience as she got older. If you watch this match carefully she is rarely trying to pull the trigger too early and often just outsteadies Hingis.

This match was fabulous - wow! Makes today's tennis look pedestrian. The talent of both players was just insane. 2000/2001 Venus was in her prime and almost unplayable. Shows what an amazing talent Hingis was that the match was so close. The rallies and shot-making were off the charts. Bravo to both.

It's a great match, but it surely doesn't not make today's tennis look pedestrian. Women's tennis had evolved as well, it's not frozen in time.
@brenchengbrencheng479411 ай бұрын
@@mikiafui disagree. Especially when it comes to their overall consistency, very few players nowadays have been able to showcase their talent at the consistent level except maybe Swiatek and Rybakina(she's getting there somehow). Take a closer look at some of the players by example Jabeur, Raducanu, Andreescu, Vondrousova, Muchova etc... Lots of them have either dealt with issues of ongoing injuries, or their lack of motivation leads to their inconsistency.

I remember watching this match like it's yesterday. Venus game had evolved and encompassing stronger strategy. She came into her game finally, and that was bad news for the rest of the tour. Unfortunately Martina as great as she was could not add to her game significantly enough, and that prevented her from keeping up. The Williams sisters brought strategy, power and ultra speed and that totally changed the WTA. The Williams Open-Stance game took time away from all the competition.

Mary Carillo says hitting too much open stance stuff ultimately hindered Venus, especially on her forehand. Way too many forehand errors later this decade, especially against power hitters like Serena and Davenport.

There’s more to womens sports than just winning Eg Serena Williams won 23 grand slams - she bludgeoned her opponents on the court to win- like a man , and there’s nothing worse than that - for a lady to be a seen to be a man The gender paradigm means us Neanderthals from Mars know only one thing - winning - but it’s not just that with the ladies , you’re out on the court for 80 or so minutes, carry yourself with aplomb, winning the game itself is beside the point

There are so many things that I remember from this summer in women’s tennis. The commentators always commented to the Williams sisters early racquet preparation. Venus was considered quite rebellious for her swing volleys (granted other players did them before her but Venus made it a habit to take high, short balls out of the air) Hingis was viewed here much in the same way that Federer is viewed. Fans saw her as being the Swiss maestro with her chess maneuvers, and Venus’s game was viewed as garish in comparison. Davenport and Seles were viewed as the Americans and they usually had crowd support over Venus and Serena During 1997-2001
@MrTresto Жыл бұрын
The big difference being that Hingis was totally overpowered whereas Federer can hit the ball just as hard as any other of the top men players. In some ways, the success of Hingis is more impressive since she lacked power in comparison to a lot of her competitors. Which also makes Federer a much more complete player before of said power. I miss seeing players like her that use finesse and the geometry of the court rather than raw power. Today's womens tennis is pretty much a scream fest... Another player I thought was awesome was Justine Henin. Such beautiful technique...
@rogerparker44682 жыл бұрын
That forehand at 21:46...come on. Hingis was dumbstruck. As good as Sampras in the 4th set tiebreaker Vs Andre at the Australian Open in 2000. Martina giving it her all, smacking that ball with venom but Venus prevailed. Maybe her best performance ever. What a statement.

Venus speaks on her channel about their rivalry and calls it her biggest rivalry ever. It is good to see some mutual respect when in their playing days they weren't exactly busom buddies. Granted Venus got along even worse with Davenport than Hingis, she and Lindsay always really hated each other for some reason, which was funny since Serena and Lindsay got along very well.
@jujumusique130525 күн бұрын
@@ChristianMoffet I’m not sure either what was going on between Davenport and Venus. But it’s good to see that Venus and Martina appreciate each other today. Both made late 90s/ early 2000s women’s tennis really exciting. Their 99 and 2000 US open semis are some of the best women’s matches ever (and best at the USO alongside Seles Capriati 1991 and Hénin Capriati 2003). ❤️

Venus was like a cheetah here, pouncing on the net and blasting winners from every corner of the court. Hingis had won 4 of the last 7 hard court majors, and made the finals of all 7 of them in a row. It took Venus in this sort of form to break that streak. Possibly the highest level I've ever seen from a female player.

Yes, I remember around 2007-08 or so that Venus’ game was a little off. She wasn’t playing as aggressively as she used to. I didn’t think it was because she was getting older. When she finally found out what it was in 2011, it all made sense. I feel bad for her because it did affect her game. She is managing it well, now, thank goodness.

When I watch matches of the Williams sisters, I feel like they changed tennis. It was a game, tactics, strategy, finesse. Then, the tractors came and overpowered everyone. It's just hacking and slashing and brute force. It's like watching Transformers after a Kubrick movie. I miss serve and volley. I miss slices. I even miss moonballs. I miss Jana Novotna. I miss Martina Navratilova. Hell, even Steffi sometimes. And I hated her so much back in the 90ies. And no, my dislike of the Williams sisters has zero to do with race or classism.
