I’ve never seen anyone handle a huge arduous dress with such expertise and grace. Ahh Vera...

If I were Costa Rican I'd be mad about now. LOL But of course Vera is stupendous as usual, despite the cornball routine.

I love Vera Ellen more than I can say, but the choreography in this movie is so corny and bad that it defies description. She executes what was given her flawlessly, but no matter how how well she dances, the old rule of GIGO applies. I'm sorry she ever had to do crap like this. If you want to see her at her best, watch 'On the Town' and 'Call Me Madam' for starters. She one of the top female dancers in the world during her career; the only others in her class were Leslie Caron, Cyd Charisse, and Ann Miller. And to coin a phrase, 'They don't make 'em like that anymore.' More's the pity. Vera-Ellen, you will live forever in the memory of everyone who ever saw you. Thank you.

Sure agree about the dance direction and sets and costumes... a collection of generic Latin American cliches. Plus tunes borrowing from those ancient standbys, the Mexican Hat Dance and 'La Cucuracha', which had been doing duty since the first Technicolor short of that name 13 years previously. Carmen Miranda and Fox had a lot to answer for! I could not believe that Leonide Massine, who was about to do the magnificent 'Red Shoes' and 'Tales of Hoffman', worked on this. When it was shown in Costa Rica the locals howled with rage. 'Patria', the imaginary Bemelmans country in 'Yolanda and the Thief', was weirder and more fun, and the eerie choreography for the 'Coffee Time' number knocks this galumphing display out of the park. Vera-Ellen's dress is as if designed to conceal poor footwork, quite needlessly. Her incessant chubby grin becomes wearing. Luckily we hardly get a glimpse of Haymes, whose face was off-putting even if you did not know what kind of guy he was.

She looks frantic to me. The skirt is too heavy n she dances too much and too fast for the music. I feel bad for her.
