Vera-Ellen with Charles Smith in the daydream musical number "You Make Me Feel So Young" from the 1946 movie "Three Little Girls In Blue".

Don't let the cheesy beginning of this clip fool you... the dance sequence is amazing and shows off Vera-Ellen's acrobatic dancing talents extraordinarily!!!!!! She is AMAZING HERE!

Vera was not only an intelligent dancer but also an intelligent actress too! How incredible, and I love her and all the characters she plays because of her.

oh myyy. look, la la land is probably my favourite contemporary musical movie, but compared to this, this completely blows la la land out of the park through pure talent and choreography. actually insane how good this is.

She mastered any form of dance on screen. Equal to or better than any partner she was assigned . A beautiful athlete.

Great Clip, if you ask me her whole back catalogue should be released on dvd. Unfortunately here in the UK you cannot obtain much. Bravo for You tube though thanks for posting 5*****

I can't believe that this is the same woman in "white Christmas". Its crazy.. She's still so beautiful though.

Vera-Ellen started dancing when she was ten, and in this clip she still looks like a teen. It seems like she still has a little of her 'baby fat' on her face, compare this to how she looks in White Christmas, quite a change ... but then they say she had an eating disorder, so she looked too thin by then.

Vera-Ellen actually looks healthy in this one. Good to see. Wish she would have maintained that look. I hope it wasn't the studio bosses that got her to think she was fat. But wouldn't be surprised if it were.

I believe Del Porter dubbed the voice of Charles Smith. Great bit of nostalgic cinema though!

Classic Vera Ellen - thanks for posting! This clip is definitely pre-anorexia as evidenced by her well-shaped legs and the pretty roundness of her cheeks. She is not shaped like a boy and actually has a bust in this movie. Anorexia is a horrible mental illness; one that claims far too many lives.

Not what killed her she died August 30, 1981 of ovarian cancer.

It may be horrible, but she never had it. Time this urban myth was buried for good.

How old was she here? I've always seen the super thin version.
@Celluloidwatcher7 жыл бұрын
This is the Vera-Ellen that, I wish, was possible in her latter films instead of the anorexia that the world saw. Some body fat on the legs, at least. Of course, I do realize that her contributions to cinematic dance were more important. Nice routine.

Vera Allen looks better with her iweight here compared to white Christmas where she was so thin and unhealthy looking. But a fantastic Dancer.

Alas, another example of infantilization in screen dance as the leading women became more pliable or less proficient. It is part of the 'back to hearth, kitchen and nursery' impulse: ex-servicemen determined not to let the ladies who had replaced them on the home front get above themselves. Hollywood was not exempt. The great dramatic queens- Davis, Garbo, Hepburn, Crawford, Stanwyck, Mae West- gave way to Anita Ekbergs, June Allysons and Marilyn Monroes, submitting, simpering and wiggling. In musicals the cool self-possession of Ginger Rogers, the take-no-prisoners brio of Betty Grable or the fearsome attack of Eleanor Powell faded out. Vera-Ellen, whom one director called 'a piece of putty', was as gifted as anyone ever filmed, but lacked confidence or ideas of her own. Here she is made to play the cute, grinning little dolly, desperate for male acclaim. This reversion to subservience did not happen all at once. Ann Miller and Cyd Charisse preserved some of the old autonomy. But as the musical form lost vitality, the trend was towards bikini-clad beach party starlets and go-go girls in cages who made Busby Berkeley's girls look like Valkyries.
