Hi Cristian, many thanks for all the video's. As an ex Discovery 3 owner I had so many problems including the "3 Amigo's". The 3 Amigo's is caused by a CAN bus crash where none of the computers can communicate. There have been many causes given, but one I have experienced is bad electrical connections in unrelated circuits causing maybe slight arcing and electrical noise that interferes with the CAN bus and causes a computer error that it seems the system cannot recover from. I have found a bad brake pedal switch causes this and I can also imagine a poor connection on the bulb could also. This may be the source of the rumours about bulbs. I also had the 3 Amigo's from a bad high pressure fuel sensor - I think it just confused the ECU. I have heard from engineers that the type of CAN bus used in the Discovery 3 is not really suitable for the number of computers. Keep up the good work, and I hope this helps. Steve.

Hi, from personal experience this is a problem. My D3 started throwing lots of issues on the matrix display and went into limp mode. I limped home after a code read from my friendly garage (LOTS of codes). Got home and remembered that bulubs can be an issue, checked and one was blown, replaced it and it was fixed and been so for three years so its not a loom issue etc. I dont think cheap incandescent bulbs can be an issue, unless they blow, but cheap LED will as they dont have ballad resistors. Just like they mess up trailer relays. The other thing is the brake switch, this causes the same issue when it starts to fail. I always carry spare bulbs in my Disco due to this and usually prefer the decent branded ones, maybe one-day ill do a proper LED conversion. PS that was a lovely digram you drew.

Hi again Christian, great video as always. Some quick remarks: (1) true, HDC activates the break lights, you can notice that on a hill descent during the night (LR break light are powerful) you will notice the red color behind. (your Freelander does that too 😉 mine did) (2) the "sensing" part of the control module can sense changes in the current/voltage, outside the specs; for example if your bulb is gone when you press the pedal, it will "know" because there is an abrupt change. It then throws an error (3-amigos...), ignition off, then on again and error is gone (but bulb is gone too 😞) Same can happen if you install cheap LED (because the power consumption is "too low" (wrong resistor values)) the module will think you have an open circuit or burned lights. 😉 (3) same error can happen if you have a break switch fault (sudden change in voltage or current sensed by the module). A quick note, I converted all my interior lights to LED... I can assure you... cheap one will fail quick because there is no voltage control for these lights, they will burn soon due to the high peaks of voltage (specially in the rear/booth interior light) if the light itself cannot endure the surge. (old filament bulbs are much more resilient in that sense)
@Vera_and_Christian3 жыл бұрын
I will pay attention to the HDC brake light next time in the dark. Who thought of this trick? Thanks. Reg (2): the ecu is in parallel connected to the bulbs, so the voltage/current is independent of the bulbs - as long as there is any bulb installed. No bulb or open circuit can be detected by the ecu and it triggers a brake switch sync fault. Cheap LEDs are usually a waste of money. I learned that too. Thanks.

So does this mean a faulty rely for the HDC can cause the three amigos?

The light bulb problem occurs when 1 filament in the twin filament (stop/tail) bulb breaks in a particular way and touches the other circuit inside the bulb. This is what upsets the electronics due to some feedback problem going to the ABS unit.
@AJB17 ай бұрын
I wonder if it sees voltage coming into the ABS unit from the send to the bulbs (that extra wire on the circuit going from the bulbs to the ECU), and uses that to detect a brake light switch fault. If the brake lights are on, but it hasn't been told that the brake pedal is pressed, and it hasn't activated the HDC brake light relay, maybe it assumes that the half of the brake light switch feeding it must have failed, and goes into fault mode? Twin filament bulbs could feed power from the tail lights into the brake lights if there's a bad earth connection, as the tail light on one side can't get to earth, so goes back through the brake light filament on that side, across the car, then to earth through the other brake light.

I brought a Mitsubishi Pajero years ago that had an ongoing ABS light problem, the owner had spent a fortune st Mitsubishi on abs sensors, rings and diagnostic work, they then condemned the abs unit itself and wanted £3200 to replace it. I bought the car and driving behind it one night noticed the high level brake ligjt glowing slightly when the lights were switched on. Also when using a trailer the ABS light would go out. Turned out to be the brake light bulb, it was a stop & tail and inside the two small arms of the filament were touching causing voltage from the lights to be back fed into the brake system, £0.50 for a new bulb saved £3200

Interesting log, but from what i know the car is able to compare the resistance of bulbs within a range of value. From workshop manual: The CJB monitors the status of the lighting circuits, relays and switches. If a fault occurs, the CJB stores a fault code applicable to the specific fault which can be retrieved using T4 or other suitable scan tool. You can check it also on the "control diagram" of Exterior Lighting section (417-07) of workshop manual.

I got tired of replacing rear brake and reverse light bulbs. It happens way too often. Today I bought Narva LED replacement bulbs. They look good, the combination Stop/tail LED bulbs are marketed as Stop/Tail. They are not ridiculously bright like some LED's are. The single filament replacement LED for the reverse light and the other rear tail light are great also. Both tail lights on each side are the same brightness. I have never had an issue with indicator bulbs and the rear fog lights, so I left them as incandescent bulbs. I am hoping that as Narva are a reputable manufacturer, and that LED's are more tolerant to voltage variations, the LED's will last the life of the vehicle. They come with a three year warranty. I am a receipt horder, I will be claiming them under warranty if they fail under three years!

If you put a single filament bulb in a double spot or vis verse you can cause a HDC fault. Type matters not brand. I see it all the time in the shop. And when the taillight harness goes bad it will cause the running/brake lamps to do act funny and this too with cause HDC/Suspension faults. But you are correct you don’t have to buy bulbs from land rovers dealerships. Cheers! Funny story I actually had a truck get towed in cause it wouldn’t shift passed third gear. Had no faults what so ever. But it would shift it your manually commanded it too. Guess what caused it! Customer installed the wrong size bulb!!! Crazy stuff!

Hi I enjoy your videos and watched this with interest a few months ago. I had a brake light issue this week. (Changed servo didn't adjust brake light switch ,so brake lights always on) This caused a HDC error followed by car lowering. Switch car off and on again error cleared. So if brake lights not on same circuit why did the lights on cause a suspension error? Keep up the good work I enjoy them regularly.

Christian..We have an 2006 LR3SE V8 4.4 now with 207,000 miles and have had it since 23,000 miles bought as a certified car in 2008. Some years ago all of a sudden we leave our house and a block away pull over as we realize the car (which is Automatic) is not shifting out of 1st Gear. Worried that we are in a big problem. I get on to the Land Rover Forum in LR3 section and one guy says in response to someone having the same problem ..check your tire pressures and your rear brake lights..It can be caused from wrong light bulb and uneven tire pressures. I checked and rear left brake light bulb not working and front passenger tire was very off. We borrowed a car from friend and bought the light bulb from dealer..adjusted air in tire..and car began shifting normal. The stupid careless place we were taking car to put the wrong bulb in. (I say stupid because we almost blew our engine due to they're carelessness and our beloved cat died from the coolant due to them) Since then it has happened again to us again a couple of times and we learned that if we switch it to Manual she can drive it until we can get our OEM bulb..as once we bought the AutoZone recommended ones and it did not solve issue. Don't ask me why. Since then we have learned when this happens it actually WILL shift in automatic if the front headlights are in the off position. Im not lying. This is a quirky situation.The last time this happened I just said to my wife pull over probably the light bulb and there it was so she drove with headlights in the off position and ordered bulbs from dealer. In our case it is almost always the drivers side rear. A few days ago our dash showed faults..on Forum they said maybe rear bulb or battery. Our mechanic ordered us the best Interstate AGM battery ...also rear brake light not as bright as right.. so he scraped socket put new bulb in all dash lights clear. Cheers

I afraid you missed the issue. The ABS module is getting 2 inputs from the brake paddle switch (one is normally open and the other is normally closed). The N.O. one is also responsible for the brake light. If the bulb you are using has a lower resistance than normal it might cause the voltage on this branch to drop. The result is that the ABS module is getting an “illegal” low on both inputs.
@mustyguld3 жыл бұрын
🤔You have assumed that what was designed what is implemented. Perhaps there is cable manufacturing issue or its software related but we had it 2 times. In each I had to replace the right bulb and things go back to normal. Anyways it’s always fun to watch you mad scientists.

It's correct if you look at the bulb with 1 filament. In our case we have double filament bulbs. Try to see what will happen if lets say Brake light filament brakes from 1 post and lays down on tail lamp filament - short. You turn lamps ON and your ABS module would sense brake lights ON.
@Vera_and_Christian3 жыл бұрын
Sounds plausible what you say. This is a scenario what would potentially cause a ecu fault. But this could happen with any bulb. I claim that „LR bulbs“ are no different from others. Thanks!

I had recently a problem with my automatic Discovery 3 that was definitely a rear tail/Brake light connection problem. The vehicle would intermittently not change up gear in Auto, but would do if I shifted to Manual +/- mode. Eventually I discovered that it work fine until I put the side/main lights on. Turn the lights off and it was fine again. I had already changed the Brake light switch, but this made no difference. Once I had checked the rear lights, this is what they showed: Pressing the brake pedal did not illuminate any Brake lights, either the LH and RH or the Upper central LED’s There are in fact 4 rear side/main tail lights. 2 RH and 2 LH. Each on top of each other. Switching them on, only the upper of the RH and LH side /main lights came on, PLUS the Upper central LED! Question: Why is the Upper central LED on when the side/main rear lights are on? It turned out that there was a fault with the upper LH side main light. The Brake light filament of that bulb was blown and possibly the contact (bulb to socket) connection was not good. Simply changing that bulb, made both RH and LH side/main lights illuminate, WITHOUT the Upper central LED. When the brake pedal is now pressed, both upper side/main lights show a brighter light AND the Upper central LED works, as it should. Now, the Auto gearbox changes both up and down gear as normal, again. But who would have thought that this Automatic up-change gear problem would have been caused , JUST by a blown Brake light bulb/ bad connection?
@nameless90210 Жыл бұрын
Same issue happened to me on 18yo D3. Auto gear box stayed in lows but manually could be pushed up. Also suspension lowered, HDC fault indicated etc. Service changed broken brake light bulb and voila all good now.

When I had this problem it turned out to a build up of greasy muck on the brake pedal switch. It was diagnosed while driving in convoy and talking on the radio to the driver following me that the fault occurred when I used the brakes. Turning the ignition off then on again reset it until I braked again. The brake light came on, the suspension dropped and there was a lack of power. I took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts. It has not been a problem since then.

Hi Christian, you are a funny, love your posts! The lights (even on a LR3 😁) are monitored by a light control module ECU using CANBUS wiring. It will throw the "bulb out"warning when a bulb draws no or not enough power. This happens the bulb does not match factory specs (power draw) or there is a ground wiring problem. I've seen people putting the "modern"LED replacement bulbs in with negative results. LED bulbs need to have the "CANBUS compatible" stamp in order to function properly on these cars.

Seems kind of odd that HDC requires a separate circuit to illuminate the brake-lights, given that HDC activates the brakes anyway. I guess the problem is that your brake lights, in reality, just signal that the brake pedal has been pressed (rather than signalling that the brakes are actually operating) so when something other than the brake pedal activates the brakes there needs to be a whole other system to illuminate the brake lights. Would probably have been simpler to have the brake lights activated by a pressure switch so they'd come on when you press the pedal OR when other systems activate the brakes without the need for separate circuits.
