You can get even crazier--something I do is put L and R outputs into input and modulator of AJH Synth Ring mod to get really strange constantly changing Rind mod effects. It's really good for if you also use it as an end stage mixer and have 4 inputs which are all separate and complex to begin with, and then cv the scanning to widen up the space between them and create harmonic and melodic variation.

Hey Chris thanks for the video! Really enjoy your run throughs and i have learned so much from you. Much appreciated!!! One question if i may, How does running a signal from the Dixie into channel 4 of the Mordax Data help the sync? Perhaps i don't understand Syncing yet. Thanks bud!!

The DATA like to know which input to look at to synchronize its display. All of the inputs are then displayed in relation to the timing of that synchronization references. So it's good to pick a stable waveform with a clear zero crossing (something that's not being modulated, and has a vertical edge, works best). If the DATA does not have a sync input, it will either display nothing as it waits for the sync signal, or it will free-run at its own speed which may or may not have anything to do with with the rate of the waveform its displaying. Free running works great if you're showing slow voltages like envelopes and LFOs, but can be useless when looking at VCOs.

hi, video's great !! thanks. i'm searching a module like the Make Noise RXMX (that is out of market) and this Verbos is really good but more expensive than it. any other suggest? thanks a lot, i'm learnig modular thanks to your channel too.

Do you happen to have any thoughts on module’s ability to create audio rate stereo side bands? Make noise claim that their x-pan is particularly suited to this job. But I don’t understand why. This module combines features from both the Joranalogue Morph 4 and the Makenoise X-pan! The one thing I was hoping you could add to this video, was audio rate panning. Make noise has a demo of their x-pan module. It’s awesome, but not a available right now. And the joranalogue morph-4 is a high HP and I potentially might get lost in its functionality. Thanks Chris!

I'm not in a good place to test it right now (still wheelchair-bound with my broken leg), but it seemed to respond very fast when I was sending it instant panning changes from a sample & hold - no spatial slurring as it slewed from one pan position to another. Plus, it's analog instead of digital (some digital modules have problems with not scanning their CV inputs fast enough for audio-rate response). So I strongly suspect the Verbos will indeed do audio rate panning/mixing/etc.

@@LearningModular I hope that leg is healing fast Chris ! :) Ok that’s good, helpful feedback thanks. I have always had my suspicions about digital or software based audio rate clarity limitations. I didn’t quite understand my skepticism fully but I figured that resolution, sample rate and aliasing might come into it. I’d love to understand this more thoroughly because I use bitwig software for a lot of my patching. Sending audio rate cv to my eurorack for example. I wonder if in that scenario, the resolution (even though bitwig has 4x over sampling) would give less impressive results? Also, I wonder if I were to get more impressive results by doing audio rate stereo panning in eurorack, would that analog quality level be lost once it is played back at 24/44.1? Much appreciated for your time answering Chris 🙏

@@PspiralifeTutorials The digital limitation is that some hardware modules, pedals, etc. scan their CV inputs at, say, 1 kHZ or slower, with no antialiasing, resulting in either no effect or irregular results when you try to audio-rate module them. If you are sending audio rate signals from software to a converter capable of handling audio rates, then there should be no issue sending CVs from Bitwig to your modules; it's the module that either is going to deal with it or not. These modules (analog ones in particular) do produce harmonics above 20 kHz; it's a question of whether you want to chop off that information before you even record it, or if you want to give more information to your software and plugins to resolve later. As far as recording audio rate sidebands, I know that recording at 44.1 kHz is popular in Europe...but I personally fall into the camp of recording at 96 kHz, and then letting the software (esp. plugins like EQ) deal with resolving that down to your mastering destination.

Hi, love these tutorials! I have a TINRS Edgecutter ADSR and I'm trying to re-create the same beautiful effect of crossfading between different channels by plugging its rise and fall into the Scan CV input of the Verbos. I recreated the same rise and fall settings form your video on my TINRS and the S and P, but it's not doing the trick. Was wondering if you're familiar with this module and if there's a trick to get it work as seamlessly as your Roland 540. Thanks you!

By its Rise and Fall, do you mean the Phase output jacks along the right edge of the Edgecutter, with LEDs next to them? If so, those are just gates for when you've reached a certain stage of the envelope (maybe to trigger another envelope), and would not work for this purpose. You'd want to use one of the Envelope Outputs in the lower right corner.

Thanks so much for replying! No I was actually using the main ADSR output and not the gates. I spoke with someone at TINRS and they were also perplexed. They did however mention that the edgecutter goes to 5v at its peak, so perhaps there’s a discrepancy there in relation to the Roland? Also the milliamperes range is different with the Roland, perhaps that has something to do with it as well? I basically recreated the same settings on the edge cutter that are in your video and it wasn’t as smooth. It almost sounds like it stops at each segment of the ADSR line, so it’s not smooth at all. And also it was only moving through two channels on the scan and pan, versus all 4, and I basically recreated all the same settings in your video on both modules? Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated!

KZbin is playing games with me tonight - I saw a follow-up from you, and now I don't, but I'll answer anyway. The Roland has an output range of roughly 0-8v, compared to the Edgecutter's apparent 0-5v. You should be able to compensate for this by adjusting the CV attenuator for Center on the Verbos. (And if the Edgecutter still won't scan the entire 4 channels, then you will need to feed it through a utility mixer that can boost its level. The Edgecutter really should be outputting 0-10v, to match the most current modules.) The milliamp rating is the power the module consumers, not what it sends out as a control, so that shouldn't be an issue. I have not used and Edgecutter, but the Roland has particularly smooth envelope shapes. You may need to spend some time dialing in the envelope shape on the Edgecutter to get a similar response. This is where a 'scope module like DATA comes in really handy to show you exactly what a module is sending out. Hope that helps...

So far it's worked fine for me. On all of their modules with the Scan feature, they can seem to be wonky if the Center and Width knobs are set to boost a channel without you realizing it; tonight or tomorrow I'll be posting an article on LearningModular.com about using it.

I still think about getting one, but I'm out of space! Saving up for a bigger case, perhaps then I will scan the pans and flange the flams.

Yep, I do that to for all sorts of things. To me it's really a no brainer--you have a 4 input mixer with cv over panning, 4 vca, cv over scanning..everyone needs mixers and modulation, this does both. If you have a simpler mixer already and are low on space I'd kick something out to make room for it. As a person low on funds and space, I've done that with almost every purchase I've ever made (can I sell something else and replace it with this to get a better net affect with a modest increase in price once I use the other thing's profits).
