By the way, one of the main reasons Rome had a bitchin' army was because they treated their troops REALLY well. Not only was it considered a very respectable job with generous pay, but the families were also compensated since the working men were gone at war. In short, Rome had a poppin' VA. I'm a hoe for ancient rome because of how effiencent and organized it was.
@oliviathompson32716 жыл бұрын
Every man had to go into the army though, or maybe I'm thinking of Sparta
@mordirit87276 жыл бұрын
@@oliviathompson3271 that's Sparta you're thinking of, enlisting was optional in Rome, which is why it had so many promising returns for the soldiers; in some points in roman history military service was rewarded with land (I *want* to say Caesar did this but I might be thinking of some consul before him) , which was pretty much the most valuable thing you could get. True, those lands were usually on regions conquered by the army and, double true, conquered regions had a nasty tendency for undergoing uprisings (in which case being one of the people directly responsible for taking over their land wasn't exactly the best thing in the world), but even so, if you took the military career in Rome you *could* go from begging for food and change to owning your own little farm with your family living nearby your best friends for your retirement in some 20 to 40 years of service. That was very alluring.

For any history nerds, Caesar allowing Vercingetorix to be strangled was still an honor. At the time, it was seen as the best most honorable/respectable way of execution. It was clean, with no blood, and allowed for proper burial after death.

Um this wasn't set in the period history considers medieval, that is seen as the point after the fall of the western Roman empire. The gladius was short and lightweight enough to be easy to stab into your opponent. Longer swords you have to swing. And Rome was able to mass produce good weapons for their soldiers, an impressive feat given Rome fell 1600 years before the Industrial Revolution.

And it was used very well with their tutsudo tatics?
@lunarketchup8829 Жыл бұрын
@@elliotgregory3356 I know this reply is a year late, but the testudo was used only to repel incoming enemy missiles. Honestly, many things were failed to be mentioned in the video, but it’s understandable. Vercingetorix was strangled and although no one knew who strangled him, he was strangled during the parade as it was a tradition for Roman Generals bringing home their captured enemy leader to do.
@lunarketchup8829 Жыл бұрын
@@elliotgregory3356 the Gladius worked so well with the Romans and was effective because of the Roman’s tactics and equipments. Specifically the rectangular shield they carried, the scutum. Similar to a Greek phalanx, a Roman cohort would move as one, shoulder to shoulder and their shield locked besides one another. The enemies get close, and the weapon that was more special than the gladius I am sad they didn’t mention, was the pillum, which was a Roman javelin mass produced for every legion to carry about three of them. What’s special about these javelins is that they ain’t normal spears for throwing. Their real purpose was to be thrown and pierce the enemies shield and the head of the pillum would be thin enough to bend, but not break, having the heavy shaft of the javelin weigh the shield down, making the enemy either drop their shields or fight inefficiently. Being killed by the pillum was just a plus one.
@lunarketchup8829 Жыл бұрын
@@elliotgregory3356 what’s more important to note is that the Roman’s are basically like this statement. “I’ll copy your homework, but I’ll get a higher score than you.” Most of what the Romans had were all stolen, inspired, or borrowed.

@@xakirax_8864 The quote is more often translated as "every man's woman and every woman's man." It's saying that he slept with a lot of women as a "top" with men as a "bottom." Sex between two men was only okay with the Romans with respect to whomever was "topping," i.e., whomever took the role of the "man" during intercourse. The bottom was seen as lesser because he allowed himself to be "feminized." The Romans were heavily patriarchal and by extension misogynistic. For a man to allow himself to take the passive role in sex was to admit to being less than a man (the Latin word for man is *vir* ). Gender roles were immensely important to the Romans, and so a man's masculinity meant everything to him. A man who was not a man was worthless, he was not *virtuous* The spelling of that word isn't an accident: virtue to the Romans (virtutis) was synonymous with manliness. The fact that Caesar got away with bottoming speaks volumes; the masses loved him so much that even scandals like this could not touch him. TL;DR: Roman men could sleep with women and men alike, but they *had* to "top" when having sex with either lest they be disgraced. Caesar only got away with bottoming because he was Caesar.
@damuni15 жыл бұрын
@Badr -eddin It's usually best to assume that most Greeks and Romans were what *we* would refer to as "bi." I emphasize the *we* because the Romans themselves didn't really have a word for homosexuality. As I said in my previous comment, the emphasis was placed on dominance (i.e. masculinity) and submissiveness (i.e. femininity). They had a term for lesbians, which translates into english roughly as "those who rub," but that's it. Roman men would actually enforce their dominance over other men by having sex with them, or by subjecting them to submissive sex. In other words, by raping them. I don't know how familiar you are with the poet Catullus, who actually lived around the same time as Caesar, but in poems 16, and 21, among others, explicit sexual threats are made by Catullus against two men, Aurelius and Furius in Catullus 16, and against Aurelius alone in Catullus 21. In the former he threatens to sodomize them and, for lack of a better term, facef##ck them for making fun of his sensitive poems: "pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo." And in Catullus 21, he threatens to facef##ck Aurelius again ("irrumare") if he (Aurelius) slept with Catullus' boyfriend Juventius. Catullus not only wrote about his boyfriend Juventius, he also wrote about his girlfriend Lesbia. This wasn't uncommon is what I'm getting at, I'm just using Catullus as an example. Also, just for clarification purposes, Lesbia's name, which is actually not the woman's real name, as she's believed to have been Clodia, the famous Roman socialite, has nothing to do with lesbianism, i.e., the modern term for love between two women, the name Lesbia is derived from the island of Lesbos, which is in Greece. Tl;dr: yes, Julius Caesar was probably bisexual, which was perfectly common and perhaps even normal in the ancient Greco-Roman world.

I-Am-Not-A-Robodt He was balding and vain about it. Caesar was given a laurel wreath for his accomplishments on the battlefield, and began wearing it all the time, as it covered some of the bald spots. The depictions, thus, could make him appear as having more hair due to the wreath. Another explanation could be that if he were vain about the baldness, he might have instructed artists to depict him as having hair in his portrayals (this part, however, is only speculation)
