oooh you need to explore Carol King's Tapestry, starting with "It's Too Late", which was in this list. And the Carpenters!

You'll love Gerry Rafferty's BAKER STREET, Santana's BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, 10cc I'M NOT IN LOVE, Karen Carpenter singing CLOSE TO YOU, Harry Nilsson's WITHOUT YOU, and Carly Simon's YOU'RE SO VAIN. Some will probably click when you hear more of the song. You actually did an excellent job! I've been saying "You Learn something new every day" for over half a century!

The guy with the big sideburns that you said you recognized only because the song is in so many compilations is, Mungo Jerry & the song is, In the Summertime. The lyrics are not quite pc for this day & age but the melody is so catchy that I love singing along to it, lol.

Very well put. I'd never thought of it that way but that's so true. Although the Beatles progression through their relatively short life as a band sure showed that sort of growth musically.

Verdy, of the songs you didn't know. Carole King and her album Tapestry is worth a listen. Carole was a prolific songwriter with many credits on many artists recordings. I have to keep reminding myself that the seventies was 50 years ago when I was but a teenager. Keep on discovering good music.

Agreed. Check out Carole King's wikipedia entry and look up the hit songs she co-wrote or solo wrote for other artists. Then do yourself a favor & record a reaction video of you listening to Carole King's #1 album Tapestry. It's so good. And check out that album wikipedia page as you'll see some famous people played or sang backup on her album.

Of the songs you didn't know, I would definitely recommend "Baker Street", "They Long to be Close To You" (Karen Carpenter - one of the greatest voices of all time), "Layla" (the full Derek and the Dominos album version, including the coda) and "Without You". And if you haven't seen the stage musical "Jersey Boys", about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, you have to (the film is awful, in my opinion)!

That wasn't bad at all. I don't blame you for the ones you didn't know. Being this young and having such a great taste of music, I'm pretty sure you would also love most of the songs you didn't know from this compilation. Fun fact: Eric Carmen didn't wright all of "All By Myself". A lot was taken from the 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto. He even had to credit him and share royalties with the Rachmaninoff estate, since the composers music wasn't out of copyright when the song came out.

Definitely a lot of iconic songs, and a few not so much. Boney M was pretty much unknown to me until a few years ago - definitely very little impact in the US - and they had 2 songs on the list. Queen - Dont Stop Me Now I'd consider a deep cut. Mull of Kintyre by Wings also a deep cut. You seriously need to explore some of the Carpenter's music - Karen Carpenter had one of the greatest voices of all time.

A lot of the songs you didn't know are actually somewhat more obscure and didn't receive as much radio airplay into the 90s/00s as many other 70s hits did. The video was missing a lot of arguably much more iconic 70s songs that did actually gain even more momentum in the following decades. Here are some examples: Aerosmith - Walk This Way Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion Boston - More Than a Feeling Boston - Peace of Mind Cheap Trick - Surrender George Harrison - What is Life Kiss - Rock and Roll All Nite Kiss - Detroit Rock City The Cars - Just What I Needed The Cars - Let's Go Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back in Town The movie Dazed And Confused (1993 but about the 70s) also led to many kids born in the 70s and 80s viewing these 70s songs (among others) as extremely iconic: Fog Hat - Slow Ride Rick Derringer - Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo The Edgar Winter Group - Free Ride War - Low Rider

I wonder where this list was compiled - I grew up in this era and knew the songs from the period as they were all very popular - except for three that I had never heard of the artist or song at any time, and there were songs from Wings and Rod Stewart that I hadn’t heard of before when of course they both had many more popular songs. I found that curious. While many would have you listen to the studio version first, Neil Young’s BBC 1971 performance of Heart of Gold is intimate and worthy of a first listen.

You don't give yourself enough credit. I was born in '66 and I'm guessing that you're at least 3 decades younger than I am so you're ability to recognize most of these songs is truly surprising/excellent. I didn't "count" myself but I would say that in rough terms... You nailed at least 99% of the disco/dance songs, about 95% of the British Bands, and most of the "more famous" Classic Rock songs. I'm giving you an overall rating of 88%. Not that that means anything but it's just a guess-timation on my part and meant to make you aware that you did much better than you think you did. I would suggest you do some deep dives in to Classic Rock from the mid 60's to the late 70's only because you might discover that a lot of songs you know from other ( more recent ) artists are just covers from this period. Thanks for the reaction... always nice to hear the music I grew up on and see other people appreciating it. ~Dan

I grew up in the era (born in 1960). Still, there were 6 that I didn't recognize. Two were from the same group (Boney M). I was never into disco or dance music, but most of those were so ubiquitous that I instantly recognized them. Here are a few tidbits on some of the others: Songs by Sweet (or The Sweet, as they were called in the early years) were written by the team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in the early days of the group. A change happened in 1974, when the album "Desolation Boulevard" was released. The first side (which included "Ballroom Blitz") were Chinn and Chapman songs. The second side (including "Fox on the Run") were written by group member Andy Scott, sometimes in collaboration with other members of the group. Note: This layout refers to the Capitol version released in the US and Canada. The UK version of the album was different. "All by Myself" was written and recorded by Eric Carmen, as shown in this compilation of clips. The music, however, was lifted directly from Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto. "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" was from the musical "Evita." Julie Covington, who sang the version in this video, originated the role of Evita Peron on the concept album. When it came to the stage two years later, the first to play the part (and sing this song on a theatre stage) was Elaine Page. The film version, of course, was Madonna, but that wasn't until 1996. "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks. You said that you hadn't heard that one. I envy you. I always considered it one of the most annoying hit songs ever.

I was born in 1970. There were 5 songs that I was not familiar with. The two Boney M songs, The Wings song, the Smokie song, and the Rod Stewart song. I think I've seen clips of them on other compilation videos. Only the Smokie song and one of the Boney M songs made the Top 40 in the US. I'm guessing this may be more of a UK based list. So many other Wings or Rod Stewart songs that could make the list. Some songs I discovered later, in sone cases because of hearing a cover. If you are from Canada, there were a couple I would have expected you to know, but perhaps not if you are more into disco.

All By Myself by Sheryl Crow is really good too. Love the Four Seasons since I was two! This really looks like it was a fun video to make! Would have liked to see Roundabout and Magic by Pilot. Love & respect~

10cc "I'm Not In Love" is the most glaring omission. Baker Street is a GREAT song, best sax ever. Give it a try. Blue Oyster Cult also has a few worthy songs. The Carpenters and Barry Manilow are two wonderful rabbit holes if you're into light pop.

Verdy, you really should do a review of Santana's Black Magic Woman. A classic!. Do Soul Sacrifice (Woodstock version) by the same band too. And, gotta do Layla by Derek and the Dominos. It's Eric Clapton with the late Duane Allman.

100% every single one of them......and that is just the tip of what the 70's gave us.

This was a good countdown, and seemed a bit more balanced towards both sides of the Atlantic than some others, although as a Briton I still spotted some that made that list more US-centric. KISS, Nazareth and John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" were not significant '70s hits in the UK (although John Denver's "Annie's Song" was). On the other hand, a 70s countdown of major hits in the UK would have to include: "Bright Eyes" by Art Garfunkel, "Save Your Kisses For Me" by Brotherhood of Man, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" by The New Seekers, "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" by Ian Dury and the Blockheads and "Eye Level" by the Simon Park Orchestra.

Well, I lived through that era and I knew 90% (didn't know 10). Some really triggered memories long buried in the past. Very trippy!

I was a teenager in the '70s growing up in Canada and I don't remember _Daddy Cool_ by Boney M ever playing on the radio back then. But _Rasputin_ by Boney M was pretty big.

I have to commend you for your knowledge of the songs from this era. Don't feel bad about the songs you don't know. I'm very, very, impressed.

I didn't know about Blue Oyster Cult, they sound like early 90s alternative rock music àla Nirvana, Pear Jam, or Green Day except their vocals which sound 70s' style. Even their song titled _Burning For You_ sounds like Hispanic rock from the early 90s.

The underlying "iconic songs" video must have been prepared by someone in or from the U.K. Quite a few of these songs were popular in the U.K. but never became hits in the U.S. Among them are: "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, "Mamma Mia!" by ABBA, "Mull of Kintyre" by Wings, "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marley, "Rivers of Babylon" by Boney M., "Sailing" by Rod Stewart and "Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush. None of these 7 songs made it higher than #30 on the U.S. Billboard Charts. They wouldn't belong on a U.S. list of "iconic songs of the 70s".
