Around the world, two billion people eat insects regularly. In the US and Europe? Not so much. But, some entrepreneurs think it’s time. We take a tour of the startup cricket farms trying to kickstart a new industry, and sample some insect snacks ourselves.

@@peterhoffmann2231 actually it's not the shortage that's the problem but the Dutch farmers are protesting the closing of 1/3 of their farms by their government in order to combat climate change. Except they have all the money and they run all the media and they set all the prices so it’s not going to be like hey stop eating meat eat these crickets. It will be I can’t afford meat what else is there, cricket burgers but it’s not called cricket burger it’s called something non descriptive like “beyond meat” mixed in with media coverage saying how guilty we should feel for eating meat, killers! Just as bad as racists and within a few generations it’s normal and no one would even think of eating meat except for the rich of course.

good thinking :) I get so sick of naysayers just dismissing the idea, nice to see someone with positive contributions on the topic! I think getting the price down is the first key that needs addressing, but Inspire looks like they're on the right track for that/probably have that under control now, at least if others can match them, therefore not giving them a monopoly, so then selective breeding would be a great next step! Part of the flavour issue can probably already be addressed with experimenting with diet too, since it has so much influence over the final taste. Lots of potential for development :)

Travel to mexico, india, bangcock, or vietnam. You'll find some bugs that are pretty tasty. I have no problem eating insects. The only reason you won't is just psychological conditioning from western media to make you more repulsed by insects so you won't go an eat them as an alternative to the beef and poultry industry. Its all in your head, its no different from eating other animals. Infact its better as these animals have no concept of emotional suffering like mammals and birds do. So it's cruelty free.

If this is the food of the future you better disguise it so it doesn't look like crickets because many people won't eat crickets.

Why not use crickets as proteins and then make chicken like dishes with similar taste and consistency (impossible burger 2.0) and then people would eat it I think

I can’t wait for rich celebrities to say we need to save the planet by eating bugs, while they eat steak and BBQ. I don’t mind eating bugs, if their meat can be 100% made into what we have now.Mimicking the taste, texture, smell, nutritional value, etc.
