Not all space suits are created equal! Verge space reporter Loren Grush tries on a prototype suit that’s custom-made for survival on the Moon, and a totally different model for Mars. It isn’t easy.
This video is part of the Verge’s Space Craft series, and we thought you’d like it as much as the folks on our other channel did!

Not long based on their designs. I think the compression suit that was being designed for Mars would be better. Think we need radically new designs because these are just too problematic.

Even the color is extremely important in the making of something that goes into space. Like, for spaceships or satellite, they need it to be white so that the sun doesn't warm the "item" up.

@ub3rfr3nzy94

Unlike space Mars has an atmosphere, therefore the suits don't need as much pressure. I believe that means they can be made smaller and therefore give the astronaut more freedom of movement. This suit looked quite bulky however, I've seen smaller prototypes.
@aleksandersuur9475
@aleksandersuur9475 5 жыл бұрын
@@ub3rfr3nzy94 Mars atmosphere does indeed allow for lighter suits, but not because of pressure, measly 600Pa that Mars has isn't enough to make any difference in that way. It is however sufficient to protect from micrometeorites. Bulky protection that has to be built in to current EVA suits used on ISS isn't needed on Mars. But unlike ISS suits, Mars suits have to be dust proof. So yeah, unique circumstances in every location. You could have one suit that works in every situation, but it would be far from ideal solution to any of them.

@Treyskyy oh really? Which average daily dose figures are you basing that on and what's your accumulated dose threshold for "you would die" and where are you taking your numbers? Would you get acute radiation syndrome, or would you get chronic radiation syndrome? Or would you just deal with elevated cancer risk?

What technologies are employed? What materials, systems and electronics are present? etc. An exciting topic, with great presentation that ultimately turned out to be rather shallow. Oddly, I still really enjoyed it. I did have a chuckle that having a quick run in a spacesuit (on earth) is what brought ‘newfound respect’ for people who sit on an enormous rocket, launch themselves into space and then navigate and explore the most dangerous environments in existence... nice one 👌

KungFuBlitzKrieg bad idea, they would need oxygen tanks and if a cut happened, the water could cause lethal problems or if their breather malfunctioned it could also kill them.

damej elyas , Well real feminist should sound like dads, just wanting the best opportunities for their daughters and not raving lunatics who hate men and marriage and children. A smart woman is beautiful. A kindhearted and compassionate one is a gemstone.

damej elyas , not at all. Mostly boys are pushed into science, mechanical engineering and technology by observation and societal expectations. Therefore, I am happy to see more women and their contributions to the various scientific disciplines being highlighted. As a father, Childen should be trained in all things and focused in their aptitude. ( Hence my earlier statement ). I will ask, what is your gender amd approx. age

So why do we need all new spacesuits? Video should be called a woman tries out two space suits. Not worth watching 0/10 The video is also implying that you must have a pressurized suit like this and it's wrong.
@eli6797
@eli6797 5 жыл бұрын
MDZPNMD they do need a pressurized suit like that though, even people flying in planes like the blackbird use pressurized suits. They make suits catered to the environment, a moon suit isn’t going to do the job
@MDZPNMD
@MDZPNMD 5 жыл бұрын
Nope that's wrong, you don't need a pressurized suit. Google "Space activity suit" Pressurized suits in planes serve a completely different purpose most of the time. Please explain to me how a moon suit isn't going to do the job on Mars.
@brandonmartin7779
@brandonmartin7779 5 жыл бұрын
Mostly because they're stiff, uncomfortable, and fragile. These suits are designed to make it slightly easier to move. That's the purpose of that black strapping. These suits are also made of a more abrasive-resistant material to allow for longer-duration missions. Since a Mars mission will be multi-month, not multi-day like the moon, the less on-site repairs you have to do, the better.
@MDZPNMD

I did not say that. A deep sea diving suit on the other hand will probably protect you from extreme temperatures with some insulation, pressure, sandstorms and some radiation too hence nasa developed the AX-5 which became the template for modern deep sea diving suits. Swap the thrusters on one of those and it even makes a small space ship. Also 100 degrees on Mars? Temperature ranges roughly from around 20 to -120 °C on Mars. Edit: This clip is showing the unique AX-5 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmW6fGl_irZqh7c for people interested in hard space suit designs.

Bulkier than the original Apollo pressure suits, even with all the extra stuff they needed on the moon like the backpacks, helmet covers, the over-boots and gloves that went on top of the already existing gloves & boots in the base pressure suit, etc. We need to be discovering technology that would allow us to slim these pressure suits down, not make them heavier and bulkier. One day we will, just wonder how long it'll take.

I know these are some very challenging engineering problems without any easy solutions, however with this kind of tech, a current day robot has more mobility than a astronaut in a suit. It would probably be more efficient to put humans in a base on mars with direct control over drones and rovers. But, it is good that they make these prototypes. It is the only way to advance the engineering behind space suits.
