Verifying Descent from Salem's Accused Witches

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of court cases and accusations of witchcraft across colonial America, yet the most famous series of prosecutions from this period are the Salem witch trials between 1692 and 1693. In that short period, more than two hundred were accused, thirty found guilty, and 20 executed. In this online lecture, Chief Genealogist David Allen Lambert discusses how to verify your lineage from someone accused of witchcraft in Salem during the Hysteria. He points you to key records, resources, and references for proving your line of descent.

Just found this incredible youtube resource after Rootstech this past spring. My ancestors Capt. Jacob Morrill and his wife Susannah Whittier (John Greenleaf's Great Aunt) signed the Bradbury Petition in defense of Mary, aged 77, married 55 yrs unjustly accused. Very proud they were brave and rose to stop the madness then. Its an excellent presentation by David Lambert and uses real life examples of how to search various archives for your Essex ancestors, regardless if they were involved in the trials or not. These precious documents are absolutely necessary they be preserved so that such rapacious land grabs by town fathers made of elderly widows and unwed female heirs never happens again. It is a landmark legal cornerstone for the abuse of property rights of women. Capt. Morrill as a sea farer on merchant vessels saw his share of human misery in the slave system in various other ports and no doubt, he and his wife's Christian and moral stand later influenced their great nephew on the subject of Abolition of the trade in human flesh. May Mrs. Bradbury and all those cruelly executed and the unjustly acccused be forever exonerated and rest in peace. Many thanks.

Witches were not burned in New England. Most were hanged, pressed or drowned. Southern Connecticut was a hotbed for witch trials. We have a high school and a road named after two of them. One of them was a man.
